Dr. Fixit Samshield P 1500/2000

An SBS-modified, self-adhesive bituminous membrane that bonds cold — no blowtorch, no LPG cylinder on site — built for tanking basements, retaining walls and other below-ground concrete that can’t afford a leak.

What is it?

A cold-applied, fully self-adhesive waterproofing membrane: SBS-modified polymer-bitumen laminated to a tough high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film, with a peel-off silicone release liner protecting the tacky underside until it’s rolled down on site. It comes in two thicknesses — 1.5 mm and 2 mm — which is where the “1500/2000” in the name comes from.

Where is it used?

Below-ground tanking on basement raft slabs and retaining walls, subway and metro box structures, lift pits, sump pits, STP and water-tank external walls, and as a damp-proof course under plinth beams — essentially anywhere a structure sits against soil or water and needs a fully bonded barrier rather than a loose-laid sheet.

Why use it?

Because it’s self-adhesive rather than torch-applied, there’s no naked flame, no LPG cylinder and no risk of scorching formwork or nearby waterproofing on a live site — a real safety consideration on congested Delhi NCR basement jobs. The full-bond construction also means that if the membrane is ever punctured after backfill, water can’t travel sideways underneath it the way it can under a loose-laid sheet; the leak stays localised to the puncture point.

How is it applied?

Prime the dry, swept concrete substrate with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer at 4-6 sq.m per litre and let it go touch-dry. Working between 4°C and 35°C, peel back the silicone release film in stages and roll the membrane down with a minimum 75 mm overlap at every joint, smoothing outward from the centre to the edges to chase out trapped air. Cover it with a protection board immediately, before backfill or the next pour.

About Dr. Fixit Samshield P 1500/2000

Samshield P sits at the self-adhesive end of Dr. Fixit’s bituminous membrane range. Its sister product, Samshield XL 1500/2100, uses the same basic idea (SBS-modified bitumen bonded to HDPE) but is torch-applied, which means a flame, a gas cylinder and a trained torch hand. Samshield P swaps the torch for a factory-applied self-adhesive coating under a peel-off release film, so the crew primes the concrete, peels, and rolls. The “1500/2000” in the name refers to the two thickness options Pidilite offers, roughly 1.5 mm and 2 mm, so a specifier can step up to the thicker sheet on projects with harsher hydrostatic pressure or rockier backfill, without changing the chemistry or the installation method.

In practice this is a below-grade specialist, not a general-purpose waterproofing coat. It shows up on basement tanking packages, metro and subway box structures, retaining walls, and STP or water-tank external walls across Delhi NCR and pan-India projects, where the waterproofing has to go on before the structure is backfilled or built up against — there’s no coming back to recoat it later. Because Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Dr. Fixit’s full system — Torchshield Primer, Samshield P, and the protection boards and detailing tape that go around it — the membrane, primer and workmanship come from one accountable source, which is usually what a structural waterproofing consultant is asking for when a tender calls out an SBS self-adhesive tanking membrane by name.

The technical insight

The chemistry is SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bitumen — the same rubberised-bitumen family used in torch-applied sheets, but formulated tacky enough to bond on contact once the release film is peeled, rather than needing heat to reactivate it. That coating sits on a tough HDPE carrier film, which gives the sheet its dimensional stability and its water/vapour-proof rating rather than the bitumen alone. The data sheet backs up the tanking-grade billing: a softening point above 105°C (ASTM D36) so the coating doesn’t slump in a hot pre-backfill wait, minimum 150 N/5cm tensile strength longitudinally and 120 N/5cm transverse (ASTM D5147), and elongation of at least 300% in both directions — enough give to ride out minor substrate movement or hairline cracking in the concrete underneath without tearing. Puncture resistance is rated at a minimum of 150 N (ASTM E154), and the sheet stays crack-free down to 10°C for low-temperature flexibility (ASTM D1970). The number that matters most on site, though, is peel strength: a minimum of 1 N/mm to a primed substrate and 1 N/mm to itself at laps (ASTM D1000). Since there’s no torch to weld the overlaps, that self-adhesive lap bond — and the quality of the primer coat underneath it — is doing all the work of keeping water out at every joint, which is exactly why Dr. Fixit specifies Torchshield Primer and a 75 mm minimum overlap rather than leaving it to judgement.

Where it is used

  • Basement raft slab and retaining wall tanking (Type A barrier protection) ahead of backfill
  • Subway, underpass and metro box structure external waterproofing
  • Lift pits and basement sump pits
  • External walls of STPs, water tanks and other below-ground water-retaining structures
  • Podium and plaza deck waterproofing ahead of landscape backfill
  • Damp-proof course under plinth beams and ground-bearing walls
  • Vertical tanking on shoring or pile walls in confined, occupied basement excavations
  • Horizontal and vertical concrete protection wherever a fully bonded, cold-applied membrane is specified over a torch-applied one

Key advantages

  • Cold, self-adhesive application — no torch, no LPG cylinder, no naked flame near formwork, rebar or other membranes on site
  • Full-bond construction keeps a post-backfill puncture localised instead of letting water travel sideways under the sheet
  • Minimum 150 N puncture resistance (ASTM E154) for a working margin against backfill damage
  • Minimum 300% elongation in both directions (ASTM D5147) to absorb minor substrate movement without tearing
  • Softening point above 105°C (ASTM D36) so the coating holds up through a hot pre-backfill wait
  • Inherently water- and vapour-proof, so it doubles as a vapour barrier under slabs
  • Available in 1.5 mm and 2 mm thickness so the spec can step up for tougher hydrostatic or backfill conditions without changing systems
  • Supplied and applied by Space Arc as an authorised Dr. Fixit distributor and applicator, so primer, membrane and workmanship sit with one accountable party

Limitations & considerations

  • Self-adhesive only — cannot be torch-welded like Samshield XL, so bond quality rides entirely on correct priming and firm rolling rather than a flame pass that forgives an imperfect substrate
  • Won’t bridge an actively wet substrate, a running leak, or loose or friable concrete
  • Not meant to sit uncovered in direct sun for long — needs a protection board and prompt backfill or topping, so sequencing matters
  • Application is restricted to a 4°C-35°C window, which can pinch winter or peak-summer schedules
  • A below-grade tanking membrane, not an exposed-roof waterproofing finish — not designed to be left as a trafficked or UV-exposed top surface
  • Detailing at corners, pipe penetrations and construction joints is workmanship-sensitive and best left to a trained applicator rather than general labour

Selection & best practice

Get the substrate smooth, dry and free of protrusions before anything else — oil, frost or standing moisture will undercut adhesion no matter how carefully the sheet is rolled. Prime with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer at 4-6 sq.m/litre and wait for a genuine touch-dry, not just surface-dry. Stay inside the 4°C-35°C application window, peel the release film in stages rather than all at once, and roll from the centre outward to chase out trapped air instead of trapping bubbles under the sheet. Hold every overlap to a minimum of 75 mm and firm it down by hand or roller. Cover the finished membrane with a protection board immediately and sequence backfill or the next pour promptly — don’t leave it exposed to sun and site traffic longer than necessary. Leave corners, pipe penetrations and construction joints to Space Arc’s trained applicator crew rather than general labour; that’s where tanking jobs actually fail, rarely in the flat field of the sheet.

Industry use cases

Residential basement, Delhi NCR

Tanked a two-level basement raft and retaining wall for a group-housing project, primed with Torchshield Primer and lapped 75 mm at every joint before backfill.

Metro / infrastructure

External waterproofing on a subway underpass box structure, chosen over a torch-applied membrane specifically to keep open flame out of a confined excavation.

Institutional / STP

Below-ground external wall tanking on a sewage treatment plant tank, where the vapour-proof rating also cut down ground moisture migrating into the adjoining plant room.

Commercial podium

Podium deck waterproofing ahead of a landscaped plaza backfill, using the 2 mm sheet for extra puncture margin under aggregate fill.

Retrofit damp-proof course

Damp-proof course installed under a plinth beam on a renovation project where rising dampness had already damaged the ground-floor plaster.

Frequently asked questions

What does the “1500/2000” in the name actually mean?
It’s the two thickness options Dr. Fixit offers in this membrane, roughly 1.5 mm and 2 mm, not a coverage figure. The chemistry and application method are identical; you pick the thickness based on how aggressive the backfill or hydrostatic pressure is expected to be.
How is this different from Dr. Fixit Samshield XL 1500/2100?
Samshield XL is the torch-applied version of the same SBS-bitumen-on-HDPE construction — it needs a flame to reactivate the underside bitumen. Samshield P is factory-coated with a self-adhesive layer under a peel-off release film, so it goes down cold with no torch or gas cylinder on site.
Do I need Dr. Fixit’s own primer, or will any bitumen primer work?
Dr. Fixit tests and specifies Torchshield Primer at 4-6 sq.m per litre, and the peel-strength figures on the data sheet are based on it. We’d only recommend swapping primers with Pidilite’s written sign-off, since there’s no torch weld to compensate for a weak bond.
Is a self-adhesive membrane really as reliable as a torch-applied one for tanking?
Yes, provided substrate prep and priming are done properly — peel strength (min. 1 N/mm) and puncture resistance (min. 150 N) are both independently tested to ASTM standards. Its real advantage is safety: no open flame near shuttering, rebar or other trades in a confined basement excavation.
Can this be left exposed on a terrace or roof deck?
No — it’s built and tested as a below-grade tanking membrane, not an exposed roof finish. It needs prompt cover with a protection board and backfill or screed rather than extended exposure to direct sun.
Does Space Arc supply and apply this in Delhi NCR, or just sell the rolls?
Both. As an authorised Dr. Fixit distributor and applicator, we can supply Samshield P and Torchshield Primer on their own, or take on the full tanking package with our own trained crew handling priming, laying and detailing.

How we position Dr. Fixit Samshield P 1500/2000

Within Dr. Fixit’s own range, Samshield P is the cold, self-adhesive counterpart to torch-applied Samshield XL 1500/2100, and pairs with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer as its specified priming system — stepping up within the same family simply means the 2 mm sheet instead of the 1.5 mm one, not a different chemistry. Where a tender or consultant’s spec names a Fosroc-branded self-adhesive tanking membrane instead, Fosroc’s Proofex 3000 occupies a comparable niche — a cold-applied, torch-free HDPE/polymer-bitumen membrane at a similar 1.5 mm thickness — and Space Arc can supply and apply either system depending on what the specification calls for. For structures that need an exposed, UV-stable topside rather than a buried one, that’s a different Dr. Fixit product line entirely (liquid-applied or coating-based systems), and we’d steer a specifier there instead of stretching Samshield P beyond its below-grade brief.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Proofex 3000 — Where a consultant’s spec names a Fosroc self-adhesive tanking membrane instead of Dr. Fixit, Proofex 3000 covers the same cold-applied, torch-free HDPE/polymer-bitumen tanking role at a broadly comparable 1.5 mm thickness.
