Fosroc Conbextra BB
Non-shrink cementitious bridge bearing grout for high-strength, free-flowing placement beneath bridge bearings, parapet posts and flanged baseplates.
What is it?
A pre-packaged, non-shrink cementitious grout (Portland cement, graded silica sands and additives) engineered specifically for grouting bridge bearings and parapet post baseplates in 10-100 mm sections.
Where is it used?
Highway and railway bridges, flyovers and viaducts in Delhi NCR and across India – beneath elastomeric/POT bearings, parapet post bases and flanged lighting columns.
Why use it?
It delivers high early and ultimate strength with controlled positive expansion, excellent low-temperature flow and very low permeability, all while meeting a recognised highway grouting specification.
How is it applied?
Mix one 25 kg bag with 4.5-4.8 litres of clean water for 5 minutes, pre-soak the substrate, then pour or pump continuously from one side into leak-proof formwork and cure exposed faces.
About Fosroc Conbextra BB
Fosroc Conbextra BB is a single-component, non-shrink cementitious grout supplied as a factory-blended dry powder in 25 kg moisture-resistant bags. It is not a general-purpose machine grout – it has been formulated for one demanding job: grouting beneath bridge bearings, parapet posts and flanged baseplates where a thin, fully-supporting, durable bedding layer is critical to long-term structural performance. On site only a controlled quantity of clean water is added to produce a highly flowable grout that fills the void completely, supports the bearing uniformly and develops high strength without the bleeding, segregation or drying shrinkage that compromises ordinary sand-cement mortar. For consultants, PWD/NHAI engineers and bridge contractors in India, the appeal is straightforward: a batch-qualifiable, ISO 9001-manufactured grout that gives a positive, low-permeability bearing seat in a single pour. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Conbextra BB as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support for specification, batch qualification and site placement.
The technical insight
The defining characteristic of Conbextra BB is its very low water:powder ratio of 0.19 (4.5-4.8 litres per 25 kg bag), which is what enables it to combine high flow with high strength and minimal bleed. Where a typical site grout might run a w/p ratio well above 0.3, the dense, low-water matrix here gives typical compressive strengths of 28 N/mm2 at 1 day, 58 N/mm2 at 7 days and 67 N/mm2 at 28 days (BS 1881: Part 116), together with the low permeability that protects embedded steel and resists chloride and sulphate attack. Shrinkage compensation comes from a controlled expansion system (verified to ASTM C827 and the elastic-stability / compressive-strain requirements of DTp SHW Clause 2601(viii)), so the hardened grout maintains intimate, gap-free contact under the bearing rather than pulling away as it cures. Chemistry is kept benign for reinforcement: total chloride ion content is below 0.1% and acid-soluble sulphate (SO3) below 4% of cement mass. The practical takeaway is that the 0.19 ratio is a specification, not a suggestion – over-watering to ease placement destroys the very expansion, strength and durability that justify using a bridge-bearing grout in the first place.
Where it is used
- Grouting beneath bridge bearings (elastomeric, POT/PTFE and steel bearings) on highway and railway structures
- Bedding of parapet post baseplates and crash-barrier post bases
- Grouting beneath flanged lighting columns and similar baseplates
- Filling bolt pockets and fixing pockets prior to grouting the main bearing seat
- Thin to medium section bearing seats from 10 mm up to 100 mm in a single pour
- Bridge rehabilitation and bearing-replacement works requiring a qualifiable non-shrink grout
Key advantages
- Non-shrink with controlled positive expansion – maintains full, gap-free contact under the bearing
- High early and ultimate strength (28 N/mm2 at 1 day, 67 N/mm2 at 28 days) for rapid load transfer
- Excellent flow even at low temperatures, allowing complete void filling in a single pour
- Low permeability protects embedded steel and improves durability against chlorides and sulphates
- Can be either poured or pumped, suiting both small bearing seats and large-volume placements
- Low chloride (<0.1%) and sulphate (<4%) content – safe around reinforcement
- Formulated to comply with DoT Specification for Highway Works Clause 2601 and manufactured under ISO 9001, allowing batch qualification
- Pre-packaged single-component powder – only clean water added on site, reducing batching errors
Limitations & considerations
- Section thickness limited to 10-100 mm per pour; deeper voids need a different system or staged placement
- Strictly purpose-built for bridge bearings/baseplates – not intended as a general machine base or anchor grout (use the Conbextra GP/EP range instead)
- Do not mix below 5 degC ambient; cold-weather working must follow Clause 2601 sub-clause 3
- Above 35 degC the mixed grout must be kept shaded and mixed with cool water (below 20 degC) to preserve flow and working time
- Short working window – place within 20 minutes of mixing to capture the full expansion benefit
- Water:powder ratio of 0.19 is fixed; over-watering causes bleed, segregation and loss of strength/expansion
- Requires leak-proof formwork, a 2-hour pre-soak and continuous single-side pouring to avoid air entrapment
- 6-month shelf life that shortens further in hot, humid storage – relevant for Indian site conditions
Selection & best practice
Treat the 0.19 water:powder ratio (4.5-4.8 L per 25 kg bag) as a hard specification and gauge water accurately – never add extra water to improve flow. Cut back defective concrete and laitance to a sound base, blow bolt holes and pockets clean, then pre-soak the cleaned substrate with fresh water for at least 2 hours, removing all free water immediately before grouting. Build leak-proof formwork (Fosroc Nitoseal MS60 under the form and at joints helps), keeping the gap to roughly 100 mm on the pour side and 50 mm on the far side with no gap at the flanks. Mix mechanically for 5 minutes with a high-shear paddle or vane mixer (never a colloidal impeller), grout bolt pockets first, then pour continuously from one side only, maintaining a constant grout head so a single front pushes out air and surplus water. For large volumes, pump with a heavy-duty diaphragm pump. Cure all exposed faces with Fosroc Concure curing membrane, continuous water or wet hessian.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra BB
Within the Fosroc Conbextra family, Conbextra BB is the specialist bridge-bearing grade, distinct from the general-purpose machine/anchor grouts (Conbextra GP, GP2, GPXtra, HF) and from the epoxy Conbextra EP range used for chemically aggressive or high-vibration machine bases. On bridge contracts it works alongside related Fosroc systems such as Nitoseal MS60 for sealing formwork joints and Concure curing membranes for protecting the cured grout. For Indian projects, Fosroc also markets regional bridge-bearing variants under the Conbextra BB72 IN, BB80 and BB92 designations, so specifiers should confirm which grade matches the strength and flow clauses in their tender. Credible competitor equivalents engineers may evaluate include Sika SikaGrout / Intraplast bridge-bearing grouts, MBS (formerly MBT/BASF) MasterFlow bearing grouts, STP, and the broader Dr. Fixit grout range – though for highway bearing seats the deciding factor is usually batch qualification against the specified clause rather than brand. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Conbextra BB, can arrange batch qualification, and provides on-site application support so the bearing seat is placed exactly to specification.
