Fosroc Conplast A657
A chloride-free, inorganic set-accelerating and anti-freeze admixture that keeps concrete setting and gaining strength when temperatures fall.
What is it?
Conplast A657 is a liquid concrete admixture from Fosroc that combines set-acceleration with anti-freeze protection. It is based on selected inorganic materials, supplied as a colourless to slightly yellowish solution that disperses instantly in the mix water.
Where is it used?
Cold-weather and low-temperature concreting in civil engineering and building works — winter pours in hill states, night and early-morning concreting, precast and any element that must reach high early strength quickly.
Why use it?
It acts as a catalyst for the early hydration reactions of cement, overcoming the setting delays and strength loss that cold temperatures cause, so formwork can be struck and the job can move on schedule. Its chloride content is held at Cl- = 0.10%, so it is safe in reinforced and prestressed concrete.
How is it applied?
Added to the concrete at a trial dosage of 0.5 to 3.0 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, dispensed into the gauging water or the mixer; the optimum rate is fixed by site trials with the actual mix and ambient conditions.
About Fosroc Conplast A657
Conplast A657 belongs to Fosroc’s Conplast range of concrete admixtures and is purpose-built for one of the most difficult conditions a concreting crew faces — placing concrete when the temperature is low. As ambient and concrete temperatures drop, cement hydration slows dramatically; below roughly 5 degrees C the reaction crawls, setting is delayed, early strength is poor, and at or near freezing the mix water can form ice crystals that disrupt the matrix permanently. Conplast A657 is engineered to counter this. It is a set-accelerating and anti-freeze additive based on selected inorganic materials, supplied as a colourless, slightly yellowish solution that disperses immediately into the mix water. It is water-based and non-flammable, which simplifies handling and storage on site. Functionally it works as a catalyst for the initial hydration reactions of cement, kick-starting the chemistry even when the surrounding temperature would otherwise stall it. The result is faster setting, useful early-age strength, and concrete that continues to cure rather than sitting dormant or freezing. Importantly for Indian reinforced-concrete practice, the product is held to a low water-soluble chloride content (Cl- = 0.10%), so unlike older calcium-chloride accelerators it does not introduce a corrosion risk to embedded steel. It complies with EN 934-2:2010 Table 6 as a set-accelerating admixture and is compatible with other Fosroc concrete admixtures, allowing it to be combined with a plasticiser or superplasticiser in a single mix design. For contractors working in Himachal, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, the North-East and high-altitude project sites — or anyone forced into winter night pours — it is a targeted tool rather than a general-purpose additive.
The technical insight
The technical value of Conplast A657 lies in how it shifts the hydration curve. Ordinary Portland cement hydration is strongly temperature-dependent; the rate of the early reactions roughly halves for every 10 degrees C drop, so a mix that sets in a few hours at 20 degrees C may take a full day or more at 2 to 5 degrees C, and any free water that freezes before the matrix has developed strength causes irreversible internal damage. As an inorganic-based accelerator, A657 raises the rate of the initial calcium-silicate and aluminate hydration reactions, so the paste passes through initial and final set sooner and begins generating strength-bearing hydrates earlier in the cold window. This early strength gain matters twice over: it lets the structure resist the disruptive pressure of any ice formation, and it allows formwork cycling to continue on programme. Because it is a true accelerator rather than a depressant, it does not simply lower the freezing point of the water — it speeds the chemistry that consumes that water. The chloride limit (Cl- = 0.10%) is the other engineering distinction: it places A657 firmly in the chloride-free category fit for reinforced and prestressed work, where chloride-bearing accelerators are prohibited by IS 456 durability provisions. The alkali content is controlled (Na2O equivalent of the order of 5 percent by mass), which is relevant where alkali-reactive aggregates are a concern and total mix alkalinity must be tracked. As with all accelerators, dosage must be tuned by trial, because over-dosing can cause excessively rapid stiffening and complicate placement and finishing.
Where it is used
- Cold-weather and winter concreting in hill and high-altitude regions (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K, Ladakh, Sikkim and the North-East)
- Night-time and early-morning pours where ambient temperatures fall well below daytime levels
- Concrete elements that must develop high early strength for rapid formwork striking and faster construction cycles
- Precast and prefabricated concrete production requiring quick demoulding turnaround
- Repair and patch concreting in cold conditions where early set is needed before re-opening or back-filling
- Infrastructure works — bridges, tunnels, foundations and civil structures — programmed through winter months
- Reinforced and prestressed concrete where a chloride-free accelerator is mandatory for steel durability
Key advantages
- Accelerates setting and early strength gain at low temperatures, keeping cold-weather pours on schedule
- Provides anti-freeze protection by speeding hydration so free water is consumed before it can freeze and damage the matrix
- Chloride-free formulation (Cl- = 0.10%) — safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete, no chloride-induced corrosion risk
- Water-based, non-flammable liquid that disperses instantly in the mix water for easy, uniform dosing
- Complies with EN 934-2:2010 Table 6 as a set-accelerating admixture
- Compatible with other Fosroc admixtures, so it can be paired with a plasticiser or superplasticiser in the same mix design
- Allows faster formwork cycling and quicker precast demoulding, improving site productivity in winter
Limitations & considerations
- A specialist cold-weather product — offers no benefit in normal or hot conditions and is not a substitute for a general water-reducer or superplasticiser
- Optimum dosage must be established by site trials with the actual cement, mix and ambient conditions; over-dosing can cause overly rapid stiffening that hampers placing and finishing
- Accelerated set shortens working/placing time, so logistics and finishing crews must be ready before the concrete is batched
- Does not replace good cold-weather practice — heated water/aggregates, insulation, covering and protection of the placed concrete are still required in severe cold
- Being alkaline and irritant, it requires gloves and eye protection during handling
- Performance and pack availability in India should be confirmed with Fosroc India, as the A657 grade is most prominently catalogued in Fosroc’s European range; equivalent Indian accelerator grades may be specified where appropriate
Selection & best practice
Always establish the working dosage by trial within the 0.5–3.0 L per 100 kg of cementitious material range, using the project’s actual cement, aggregates, water and the expected ambient temperature — never adopt a fixed rate off the page. Dispense A657 into the gauging water or directly into the mixer (not onto dry cement) so it disperses uniformly, and add it separately from any other admixture rather than pre-blending in the same container. Where a plasticiser or superplasticiser is also used, batch each admixture separately and verify compatibility by trial. Treat A657 as one part of a complete cold-weather regime: warm the mix water and/or aggregates as needed to keep concrete-as-placed above the minimum temperature, and insulate, cover and protect the placed concrete so it retains heat of hydration until it has gained enough strength to resist freezing. Because set is accelerated, have placing, compaction and finishing crews fully ready before batching to avoid losing workability. Store containers sealed, off the ground, in a dry place within the recommended temperature range, and wear gloves and goggles as the product is alkaline. For any reinforced or prestressed element, retain the chloride-free declaration for QA records to demonstrate IS 456 compliance.

How we position Fosroc Conplast A657
Conplast A657 sits in the cold-weather corner of Fosroc’s Conplast admixture family, alongside related grades such as Conplast Antifreeze and the non-chloride accelerator Conplast NC, and works comfortably with Fosroc plasticisers and superplasticisers like the Conplast P, MR and SP series (for example Conplast SP430) when a single mix needs both workability and cold-weather acceleration. It should not be confused with general water-reducers or retarders — its job is specifically to keep concrete setting and gaining strength when it is cold. Among the broader Indian market, comparable accelerating and anti-freeze admixtures include Sika’s accelerator range (such as SikaRapid and Sika Antifreeze), MBS / Master Builders Solutions MasterSet and MasterPel cold-weather products, Dr. Fixit’s accelerating and integral admixtures, and STP’s concrete admixture line. These are credible alternatives a specifier may evaluate, but A657’s particular strengths are its inorganic, chloride-free chemistry and dual set-accelerating plus anti-freeze action that suit reinforced cold-weather concreting. One honest caveat for Indian buyers: the A657 grade is catalogued most prominently in Fosroc’s European range, so for a domestic project Space Arc will verify current availability with Fosroc India and may recommend the directly equivalent Indian accelerator grade where that better fits supply, specification and warranty needs.
