What is it?

A chloride-free, brown liquid mix-improving admixture engineered for semi-dry (zero-slump) concrete produced on paving and masonry block machines. It also functions as a plasticiser/water reducer in conventional concrete.

Where is it used?

Concrete block, paver, kerbstone, hollow-block and spun/pressed pipe production plants — wherever modern static or egg-laying block machines compact near-dry mixes in moulds.

Why use it?

It lets producers raise early and final strength, improve ‘green’ strength to cut breakage, and reduce cement content or cycle time — improving margins and product quality on the same equipment.

How is it applied?

Supplied ready to use; metered with a dispenser and sprayed onto the aggregate/sand belt, into the loading hopper or directly into the mixer at 0.10-0.40 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, with the optimum fixed by site trials.

About Fosroc Conplast SD100

Fosroc Conplast SD100 is a purpose-built admixture for the semi-dry concrete used by block, paver, kerb and pipe manufacturers — the very low water/cement, near-zero-slump mixes that are pressed and vibrated into moulds rather than poured. Most Fosroc Conplast water reducers are formulated for plastic, flowable concrete; SD100 is different in that it is tuned to the rheology of a damp, granular mix that must release cleanly from a mould the instant it is demoulded. According to the official Fosroc technical data sheet, it is chloride-free and supplied as a brown solution that disperses instantly in water. For Indian producers of interlocking pavers, solid and hollow blocks, kerbstones and lightweight masonry units, it sits in the same family as a water-reducing plasticiser but is selected for its effect on machine productivity and finished-unit strength rather than on slump. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India, alongside the wider Conplast admixture range. The product is also marketed internationally as a quality-and-consistency enhancer for semi-dry concrete, and the same chemistry serves as a general-purpose plasticiser/water reducer where required.

The technical insight

The mechanism is dispersion, not lubrication. Conplast SD100 deflocculates the fine cement and filler particles in the mix, so the limited mix water wets more particle surface area and the paste flows and packs better under the machine’s vibration and pressure. In a semi-dry mix this matters more than in flowable concrete: better particle packing means denser compaction at the same vibration energy, which is what converts into higher strength without extra cement. The official Fosroc TDS gives a concrete illustration — in a paving-block trial the control mix reached 51.0 N/mm2 at 7 days while the SD100 mix reached 62.5 N/mm2, with the standard deviation falling from 2.3 to 1.4, indicating both higher and more consistent strength. A separate trial held strength essentially constant (53.0 vs 54.0 N/mm2) while cutting cement from 425 to 385 kg/m3. The same dispersing action improves ‘green’ strength (the strength of the freshly demoulded, uncured unit), which is the property that governs handling breakage on a high-speed line. The trade-off to respect is that the admixture improves water effectiveness, so on very wet aggregate or very high-intensity vibration machines an unchanged dose can tip the mix into excessive workability — which is why every dose is set by plant trial.

Where it is used

  • Interlocking concrete paving blocks (CC pavers) on static and egg-laying machines
  • Solid and hollow concrete masonry blocks, including lightweight (sintered PFA aggregate) blocks
  • Concrete kerbstones, channels and edging units
  • Spun and pressed concrete pipes, manhole rings and vault/cover units
  • General plasticiser / water reducer in conventional structural concrete and mortar where required
  • Cement-content optimisation programmes for high-volume precast block plants

Key advantages

  • Chloride-free (Nil to BS 5075) — safe for use in reinforced and prestressed precast units
  • Higher early and later-age strengths without adding cement
  • Allows cement content to be reduced while maintaining strength, lowering unit cost
  • Improves green strength, cutting breakage and rejects on the production line
  • Improves mix rheology under vibration for smoother machine operation and shorter cycle times
  • Better, more uniform mould filling — lower standard deviation and tighter dimensional control
  • Improves surface finish of the finished unit
  • Compatible with OPC, PPC, PSC and cement replacements (PFA, GGBFS, microsilica)
  • Water-based and non-flammable; 12-month shelf life

Limitations & considerations

  • Designed for semi-dry/zero-slump mixes — not a general superplasticiser for high-slump flowable concrete (use Conplast SP430/SP500 for that)
  • Can be too effective on machines with very high-intensity compaction vibration, producing excessive workability
  • Very wet aggregate stockpiles can combine with improved water effectiveness to over-soften the mix
  • Overdosing (around double the intended dose) causes excessive workability, set retardation and reduced early strength
  • Optimum dosage is plant-specific and must be established by trial mixes — published ranges are a starting point only
  • Should be dosed separately from other admixtures, never pre-mixed in the same stream
  • Performance figures in the TDS are illustrative and not a guaranteed specification

Selection & best practice

Start trials at the lower end of the 0.10-0.40 L/100 kg range and adjust based on demould behaviour, green strength and 7-day cube/unit strength rather than slump. Spray the metered dose onto the aggregate/sand belt, into the loading hopper or directly into the mixer using a recommended dispenser — spraying is essential for even dispersion through a damp mix. Re-optimise machine settings (vibration time, pressing pressure, cycle time) to capture the improved rheology rather than leaving them unchanged. Account for aggregate moisture daily, deduct admixture liquid from the mix water in the water/cement calculation, and keep the product sealed at 2 C to 50 C. Run a fresh trial whenever cement source, fly ash/GGBFS proportion or aggregate gradation changes, and dose SD100 separately from any other admixture.

Industry use cases

Precast paver & block manufacturing

Paver and block plants use SD100 to lift 7-day strength (e.g. 51.0 to 62.5 N/mm2 in a Fosroc paving-block trial) and tighten standard deviation, hitting strength grades reliably while trimming cement.

Infrastructure & roads

Producers supplying kerbstones, channels and interlocking pavers for highways, footpaths and urban development specify SD100 for consistent dimensional control and surface finish on high-volume lines.

Masonry & walling

Solid, hollow and lightweight (sintered PFA) block makers use it to raise green strength and cut handling breakage, and to maintain strength at lower cement contents.

Concrete pipe & precast

Spun/pressed pipe, manhole and vault producers exploit improved compaction and mould filling for denser, lower-permeability units.

Cost-optimisation programmes

High-throughput plants run SD100 trials specifically to reduce cement (e.g. 425 to 385 kg/m3 at equal strength) and shorten pre-vibration/cycle times for higher output per shift.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conplast SD100 a superplasticiser?
No. It is a mix-improving admixture for semi-dry (near-zero-slump) concrete and can act as a plasticiser/water reducer, but it is not a high-range water reducer for flowable concrete. For high-slump structural or RMC concrete use a Conplast SP-series superplasticiser such as SP430 or SP500.
What is the correct dosage of Conplast SD100?
The Fosroc TDS gives a typical starting range of 0.10 to 0.40 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material (including PFA, GGBFS or microsilica). Some regional Fosroc literature cites up to 0.6 L/100 kg. The optimum must always be fixed by plant trials using your actual materials and machine.
Does it contain chloride? Is it safe for reinforced precast?
It is chloride-free, rated Nil to BS 5075, so it is suitable for reinforced and prestressed precast units where chloride-induced corrosion is a concern.
How is it added to the mix?
It is supplied ready to use and should be metered with a dispenser and sprayed onto the aggregate/sand belt, into the loading hopper or directly into the mixer. Spraying ensures even dispersion through a damp, semi-dry mix; it should not be pre-mixed with other admixtures.
What happens if I overdose?
Roughly double the intended dose typically makes the mix excessively workable, with some set retardation and reduced early-age strength. On very high-intensity vibration machines or with very wet aggregate it can over-soften the mix even at normal doses, so trials and moisture control are essential.
What packaging and shelf life does it have, and is it available in India?
It is supplied in 20 litre drums and bulk, with storage tanks for large users, and has a minimum 12-month shelf life when stored between 2 C and 50 C. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SD100

Conplast SD100 occupies a specialist niche in the Fosroc Conplast range: it is the admixture for semi-dry, machine-pressed concrete, not for flowable mixes. Within Fosroc’s own line-up it pairs naturally with Conplast SD110 (the next-generation semi-dry mix improver) and complements the air-entraining Conplast AEA where freeze-thaw durability of pavers matters; producers who also pour wet concrete will separately use Conplast SP430, SP430 SRV or SP500-series superplasticisers, and Conplast Crystalline for integral waterproofing of structural concrete. For block and paver plants, the most direct competitors in the Indian and global market are MBS (Master Builders Solutions, ex-BASF) MasterPel/MasterFinish secondary-additive and block-mix systems and Sika’s Sika Pump/Sika block-and-paver admixtures; both offer dedicated semi-dry-concrete grades comparable to SD100. Sika ViscoCrete and Sika Plastiment cover the broader water-reducer space. Domestic and waterproofing-led brands such as Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP (Shalimar/STP Ltd) compete strongly in integral waterproofing and general admixtures but have a thinner offering specifically for machine-made semi-dry block production, where SD100’s green-strength and cycle-time benefits are its strongest differentiator. The honest positioning: choose SD100 when the goal is denser, stronger, more uniform pressed units at lower cement cost on existing block/paver machinery; for poured structural concrete, retardation, or waterproofing, a different Fosroc Conplast grade or a competitor’s flowable-concrete product will be the better fit.
