What is it?

A liquid superplasticiser (high-range water-reducing admixture) based on sulphonated naphthalene polymers that lets you cut mixing water by up to 25% without losing workability.

Where is it used?

Ready-mix and site-batched concrete for high-rise RCC, pumped concrete, precast and prestressed elements, bridges, water-retaining structures and dense waterproof concrete.

Why use it?

It raises strength and durability by lowering the water-cement ratio, improves flow for easy placing and pumping, and is chloride-free so it is safe in reinforced and prestressed work.

How is it applied?

Dosed into the mix water or added to wet concrete at the batching plant or transit mixer at 0.3 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement; never added to dry cement or aggregate.

About Fosroc Conplast SP500

Fosroc Conplast SP500 is a high-range water-reducing admixture, commonly called a superplasticiser, formulated for Indian concreting conditions where high strength, durability and pumpability all matter on the same pour. Chemically it is based on sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) polymers and is supplied as a brown, instantly water-dispersible liquid that disperses cement grains and frees up the water otherwise trapped between them. The practical result is a workable mix at a much lower water content, which is the single biggest lever an engineer has over the strength and permeability of hardened concrete.

In real Indian site conditions, SP500 solves three recurring problems. First, on high-rise and infrastructure projects in Delhi NCR, Gurugram and Noida, concrete often has to be pumped tens of metres while still arriving placeable. Second, designers want M30 to M50-plus grades without inflating cement content. Third, water-retaining and basement structures need low-permeability concrete that resists chloride and water ingress. By allowing water reductions of up to 25 percent, SP500 lets the mix designer hold workability while dropping the water-cement ratio, which simultaneously lifts compressive strength, cuts porosity and produces a denser, more durable matrix.

It is worth being precise about where SP500 sits in the Conplast family. It is a conventional naphthalene-based (SNF) superplasticiser, not a polycarbonate ether (PCE) hyperplasticiser. That makes it cost-effective and reliable for normal-to-extended slump retention needs, while newer Auramix/Structuro PCE admixtures are reserved for very long haul times or self-compacting concrete. SP500 is chloride-free to IS:456, so it is safe in reinforced, prestressed and sulphate-resisting cement concrete, and it additionally conforms to IS 2645 as an integral waterproofing admixture when used to densify the mix. As an authorised Fosroc distributor, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Conplast SP500 with batch documentation across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, along with mix-trial guidance to fix the right dosage for your cement and aggregates.

The technical insight

The active mechanism is electrostatic dispersion. SNF polymers adsorb onto cement particles and impart a negative surface charge, so the grains repel each other instead of flocculating. This releases the water that would otherwise be locked inside cement flocs, which is why the same slump can be held at a 15 to 25 percent lower water content. Because compressive strength and permeability are governed almost entirely by the water-cement ratio, that water cut translates directly into higher early and ultimate strength and a tighter pore structure. The flip side of SNF chemistry is finite slump life: workability is high immediately after dosing but falls back over roughly 30 to 60 minutes, faster in summer heat, so SP500 is best dosed at or near the point of placement. Dosage is not a fixed number; it must be optimised by trial mix against the actual cement, fly ash or GGBS, and aggregate grading, because over-dosing an SNF admixture risks bleeding, segregation or retardation rather than further benefit.

Where it is used

  • High-strength structural RCC from M30 up to M50 and above without raising cement content
  • Pumped concrete for high-rise columns, slabs and infrastructure where long delivery and lift distances are involved
  • Precast concrete elements where high early strength accelerates demoulding and turnaround
  • Prestressed and post-tensioned members, where the chloride-free formulation protects strands
  • Low-permeability waterproof concrete for basements, water tanks, STPs and retaining structures
  • Mass concrete in bridges, foundations and rafts where a controlled, workable, low-water mix reduces cracking risk

Key advantages

  • Cuts mixing water by up to 25% at constant workability, directly raising strength and durability
  • Produces denser, close-textured concrete with reduced porosity and lower water and chloride permeability
  • Improves workability for easier, faster placing and compaction, reducing or eliminating vibration
  • Develops higher early strength, valuable for precast demoulding and fast-track schedules
  • Chloride-free to IS:456, so safe in reinforced, prestressed and sulphate-resisting cement concrete
  • Higher cohesion minimises segregation and bleeding, which directly aids pumpability
  • Cost-effective SNF chemistry compared with premium PCE admixtures for standard requirements
  • Complies with IS:9103, BS:5075 Part 3 and ASTM C494 Type F and G, easing specification approval

Limitations & considerations

  • Naphthalene-based slump retention is limited; workability falls within roughly 30 to 60 minutes, faster in summer, so it is not ideal for very long transit times without re-dosing
  • For self-compacting concrete or very extended slump life, a PCE hyperplasticiser such as Fosroc Auramix is usually a better fit
  • Over-dosing beyond the trial-optimised level can cause bleeding, segregation or set retardation rather than added benefit
  • Dosage must be established by site trial mix; it cannot be reliably copied between different cements, SCMs and aggregate sources
  • Being a water-based liquid, it must be protected from freezing and used within its 12-month shelf life
  • It reduces water demand but does not by itself guarantee a watertight structure; detailing, curing and joint treatment still govern leak-free performance

Selection & best practice

Always fix the dosage by laboratory or site trial mix using the project’s actual cement, fly ash/GGBS and aggregates, starting near the lower end of the 0.3 to 2.0 percent range and adjusting to target slump. Add SP500 to the mixing water or to already-wetted concrete in the transit mixer, never directly onto dry cement or dry aggregate, and mix thoroughly for uniform dispersion. Because slump life is finite, dose as close to placement as practical and account for ambient temperature, especially in North Indian summers. Maintain a properly graded, cohesive base mix so the water reduction improves density rather than triggering bleed, and never increase dosage as a shortcut for a poorly designed mix. Store sealed drums under shade between roughly 2 and 40 degrees C, protect from freezing, and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fosroc Conplast SP500 used for?
It is a superplasticiser (high-range water-reducing admixture) used to make high-strength, low-permeability and pumpable concrete. By reducing mixing water by up to 25% at the same workability, it raises strength and durability, which is why it is common in high-rise RCC, precast, prestressed and water-retaining structures.
What is the recommended dosage of Conplast SP500?
The typical range is 0.3 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement or total binder. The exact figure should be fixed by trial mix with your actual cement, fly ash/GGBS and aggregates, since the optimum varies with materials and target slump.
Is Conplast SP500 chloride-free and safe in prestressed concrete?
Yes. It is chloride-free to IS:456, so it is safe in reinforced and prestressed concrete and compatible with sulphate-resisting cements and marine aggregates.
What standards does Conplast SP500 comply with?
It complies with IS:9103:1999 and BS:5075 Part 3, meets ASTM C494 Type F and G depending on dosage, and conforms to IS 2645 as a waterproofing admixture when used to densify the mix.
What is the difference between Conplast SP500 and a PCE admixture like Auramix?
SP500 is a naphthalene (SNF) superplasticiser, cost-effective and reliable for normal to moderately extended slump needs but with finite slump retention. PCE hyperplasticisers such as Fosroc Auramix hold slump far longer and are preferred for self-compacting concrete or very long transit times.
How is Conplast SP500 added to the concrete?
Add it to the mixing water or to already-wetted concrete in the mixer and mix thoroughly. Never add it directly to dry cement or dry aggregate, and dose as close to placement as practical because workability falls over 30 to 60 minutes, faster in hot weather.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP500

Conplast SP500 is Fosroc’s workhorse naphthalene-based (SNF) superplasticiser, positioned as the cost-effective, specification-friendly choice for everyday high-strength and pumpable concrete in India. Within the Fosroc range, step up to a PCE hyperplasticiser such as Fosroc Auramix or the Structuro series when you need very long slump retention or self-compacting concrete, pair it with Conplast X421IC or Conplast RP264 where set retardation is also required, or choose an integral crystalline/waterproofing admixture for dedicated water-resistance. Against competitor SNF and PCE superplasticisers, it is directly comparable to Sika Sikament/ViscoCrete, MBS (MC-Bauchemie) Muraplast, and admixtures from BASF Master Builders Solutions; for strictly integral waterproofing admixtures, Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ and STP products are the usual alternatives, though those serve a narrower function than a true water-reducing superplasticiser. As an authorised Fosroc distributor, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine SP500 with batch traceability and recommends a site trial mix to confirm dosage before bulk supply across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
