Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard
Pre-applied, fully-bonded HDPE tanking membrane for grade 1, 2 and 3 basement waterproofing under BS 8102 and IS 16471.
What is it?
A pre-applied, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waterproofing membrane carrying a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and a trafficable protective face. Fresh concrete cast directly against it forms an integral mechanical-adhesive bond, creating a continuous tanked barrier with no separation plane.
Where is it used?
Below-grade structures: basement rafts and retaining walls, water-retaining tanks, podiums, tunnels, lift pits and ground-bearing slabs across residential, commercial and infrastructure projects in India.
Why use it?
Because it is fully bonded to the concrete, water cannot track laterally between the membrane and the slab even if a localised puncture occurs, which is the single biggest failure mode of loose-laid systems on Indian sites with high water tables.
How is it applied?
Rolled out adhesive-side up on blinding (horizontal) or fixed to shoring/piles (vertical), laps overlapped 75 mm with the self-adhesive selvedge, cut joints taped to 100 mm, then concrete is poured directly onto the membrane within the recommended window.
About Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard
Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard is a pre-applied (also called “blind-side”) waterproofing membrane built around a tough HDPE film, a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive and a protective weather-resistant top surface that can be trafficked during reinforcement fixing. Unlike conventional loose-laid sheets or post-applied torch-on systems, it is positioned before the structural concrete is cast. When the concrete is poured directly against the adhesive face, it keys into the membrane and cures to form a permanent, integral bond. This bonded interface is the product’s defining engineering advantage: should the slab settle or a puncture occur during the works, there is no continuous void for water to migrate through, so any ingress is contained to the immediate point of damage rather than tracking across the entire footprint.
In the Indian context, this matters enormously. Across Delhi NCR, coastal Mumbai, Chennai and the high-water-table belts of eastern India, basement leakage almost never originates at the visible wet patch. With unbonded membranes, water finds a defect, then travels between sheet and structure until it surfaces metres away, making leak tracing and remedial injection slow and expensive. A fully bonded pre-applied membrane like HDPE P Standard removes that pathway. The product provides protection against water and water vapour and shields the concrete from aggressive ground salts, dissolved chemicals and hydrocarbons commonly found in urban fill and contaminated brownfield sites.
The membrane is supplied with a self-adhesive selvedge along one edge so that adjacent rolls seal to each other, and Fosroc offers a full range of auxiliary products — sealed tape, sanded detailing tape and HDPE-compatible hydrophilic and PVC waterstops — so the entire tanking system, including construction joints and penetrations, comes from a single source. Application needs no priming and no separate protection screed, which compresses the construction programme. The “Standard” grade sits in the HDPE P family alongside the Smooth RF (release-film) variant; the Standard grade is offered in 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.8 mm thicknesses and is the higher-performance member of the range, with a film tensile strength exceeding 27 MPa. Fosroc has progressively rebranded parts of this range under the Proofex HDPE-B nomenclature, but the chemistry, function and installation method of the pre-applied HDPE membrane remain the same.
Space Arc Engineering supplies Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard as an authorised Fosroc distributor, with stock and applicator-support coverage across Delhi NCR and on a Pan-India project basis.
The technical insight
The performance hierarchy in pre-applied membranes is governed by the quality of the concrete-to-adhesive bond, not by film thickness alone. HDPE P Standard relies on a pressure-sensitive adhesive that mechanically interlocks with the cement paste as it hydrates — which is why surface preparation (a float-finished, dry, laitance-free, contaminant-free blinding) and pouring concrete within the recommended window after the sealed tape is applied (Fosroc recommends concrete be placed within 45 days of taping) are not optional refinements but the determinants of whether the bond develops. The HDPE film carries the structural properties: a tensile strength above 27 MPa (ASTM D412) with elongation over 500% gives the sheet the ability to bridge shrinkage and settlement cracks without rupturing, while puncture resistance above 1000 N (ASTM E154) protects it against rebar chairs, foot traffic and aggregate during the pour. Because the membrane resists a hydrostatic head greater than 70 m and remains flexible below -25°C with no cracking, it is suited to deep basements and water-retaining structures rather than just nominal damp-proofing. The trafficable protective layer is what distinguishes a true blind-side membrane from a self-adhesive sheet — it lets steel fixers work directly on the membrane without specialist protection boards, which is the practical reason the system saves programme time on congested Indian basement rafts.
Where it is used
- Basement raft slabs and retaining walls cast against shoring, soldier piles, secant piles or shotcrete (blind-side tanking)
- Water-retaining structures such as underground tanks, sumps and STPs requiring grade 3 (dry) environments
- Podium decks, plaza slabs and ground-bearing floor slabs over contaminated or saline ground
- Lift pits, escalator pits and other deep localised excavations below the water table
- Tunnels, cut-and-cover sections and underground metro/infrastructure boxes
- Protection of concrete against aggressive ground salts, sulphates, hydrocarbons and chemical contamination on brownfield sites
Key advantages
- Fully bonds to poured concrete, eliminating lateral water migration between membrane and structure — leaks stay localised and traceable
- Provides BS 8102:2022 / IS 16471:2017 grade 1, 2 and 3 basement protection from a single system
- Pre-applied and blind-side capable, so it works where there is no external working space against shoring or piles
- No priming and no separate protection screed required, shortening the construction programme
- High puncture resistance (>1000 N) and trafficable protective face allow rebar fixing directly on the membrane
- Resists hydrostatic head over 70 m and stays flexible below -25°C, suiting deep and water-retaining structures
- Inert film with no risk of reaction with ponded waste before the concrete is cast
- Protects concrete from aggressive ground salts, chemicals and hydrocarbons
- Self-adhesive selvedge plus a full auxiliary kit (sealed tape, waterstops) for joints and penetrations from one supplier
Limitations & considerations
- The bond — and therefore the whole system’s integrity — depends on casting concrete within the recommended window (concrete placed within 45 days of taping); long exposure or delayed pours compromise adhesion
- Requires a sound, float-finished, dry, laitance-free and contamination-free blinding/substrate; it cannot bridge a poorly prepared base
- Detailing at penetrations, pipe entries, corners and upstands needs careful, trained workmanship — these are the common defect points
- Backfill must be free of sharp objects and contain no bricks, blocks or boulders larger than 50 mm, or protection boards must be used
- Vertical application against shoring relies on correct mechanical anchorage; where external working space exists a self-adhesive variant (HDPE-S / Proofex) is often more appropriate
- Performance figures are laboratory-derived; field results vary with site conditions, so applicator competence is decisive
- Not a substitute for sound concrete mix design, adequate cover and proper construction-joint waterstops — it is one layer of a defence-in-depth strategy
Selection & best practice
Treat the membrane as one element of a complete tanking system, not a standalone fix. Prepare a float-finished, dry, laitance-free blinding; lap rolls 75 mm using the self-adhesive selvedge and seal all cut joints and transverse end laps with Fosroc Membrane HDPE Sealed Tape to 100 mm width, rolling every overlap firmly. Stagger end joints by half a roll length to avoid joint build-up in one zone. Integrate HDPE-compatible hydrophilic or PVC waterstops at every construction joint, and detail pipe penetrations and upstands with sanded tape per Fosroc guidance. Critically, schedule the works so structural concrete is cast within the recommended window after taping (Fosroc recommends within 45 days), keep tapes clean and dust-free until the pour, ensure at least 10 N/mm² compressive strength before stripping any formwork the membrane was applied to, and protect the membrane from sharp backfill (no objects larger than 50 mm). Always engage a Fosroc-trained applicator for blind-side work.

How we position Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard
Fosroc Membrane HDPE P Standard is the right choice when you need true blind-side, fully-bonded tanking — typically deep basements cast against piles or shoring with no external access. Within the Fosroc range, pair it with Fosroc hydrophilic and PVC waterstops at construction joints, Fosroc Membrane HDPE Sealed Tape for laps, and consider the HDPE-S or Proofex 3000 self-adhesive variants for vertical faces where external working space does exist; note that Fosroc now markets parts of this range under the Proofex HDPE-B naming. Against competitors, it sits opposite Sika’s pre-applied SikaProof and CCW/Preprufe-class HDPE systems (the bonded pre-applied category), and is a step above loose-laid PVC/HDPE sheets. For self-adhesive and crystalline alternatives commonly seen on Indian sites, compare with MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterSeal pre-applied membranes, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) pre-applied/LWS systems, and STP Limited (Shalitex/Shalimar) bituminous and HDPE membranes. Choose HDPE P Standard specifically where the bonded interface and lateral-water-containment behaviour justify the detailing discipline it demands; for simpler above-water-table or accessible-wall situations, a self-adhesive or liquid-applied membrane may be more economical. Space Arc Engineering can advise on the correct system per the BS 8102 grade and ground conditions of your project.
