What is it?

A factory-made high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waterproofing sheet coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and protected by a release film. It is laid before the concrete is poured (pre-applied), so the fresh concrete keys into the adhesive and forms a permanent, integral bond with the membrane.

Where is it used?

Below-grade structures cast against the membrane: basement rafts and retaining walls, water-retaining tanks, podiums, tunnels, metro boxes, lift pits, and structures on contaminated or chemically aggressive ground.

Why use it?

The intimate concrete-to-membrane bond stops water from tracking laterally between the sheet and the slab, so even a localised puncture cannot flood the whole structure. It needs no primer or separate protection layer and stays in place if the substrate settles.

How is it applied?

Roll out onto blinding (horizontal) or fix to shoring/piling/sheet pile (vertical) with the adhesive side facing the future pour, overlap 75 mm at side selvedges, seal end laps with HDPE Sealed Tape, then cast structural concrete directly against it within the recommended window.

About Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF

Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF is a pre-applied, fully-bonded waterproofing membrane engineered for the most demanding below-ground tanking work in Indian construction. It belongs to a class of products that have largely replaced traditional loose-laid or post-applied bituminous systems on critical basements, because of one defining behaviour: the structural concrete bonds permanently into the membrane’s adhesive layer. Once cured, there is no gap, no void and no migration path between the sheet and the slab. This single property is what allows a basement to be designed to BS 8102:2009 and IS 16471:2017 Grade 1, 2 and 3 dryness levels with confidence. The membrane is built from three working layers: a tough smooth-faced HDPE carrier film that provides the primary barrier and mechanical robustness; a pressure-sensitive adhesive that grips the wet concrete; and a removable release film that protects that adhesive on site until the pour. A self-adhesive selvedge runs along one edge of every roll so adjacent sheets seal to each other without tape, and a weldable selvedge option is available where a heat-fused joint is preferred. In Indian conditions, where high water tables in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, aggressive sulphate-bearing soils across parts of the NCR and Gujarat, and contaminated brownfield sites are common realities, the HDPE film also acts as a chemical and hydrocarbon barrier, protecting the concrete from ground-borne salts and pollutants. For contractors, the practical appeal is the simple, dry, primer-free installation that keeps to programme even in monsoon-affected schedules, and the fact that the membrane is mechanically fixed rather than dependent on the substrate being sound. Space Arc Engineering supplies Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, together with the matching Fosroc HDPE Sealed Tape, Proofex 3000 for vertical working-space conditions, and the full Fosroc hydrophilic and PVC waterstop range needed to detail construction joints and penetrations into a complete tanking system.

The technical insight

The performance logic of a pre-applied membrane is fundamentally different from a post-applied one, and understanding it changes how you specify and install. A post-applied sheet (or liquid) sits on cured concrete and relies on that bond alone; if water finds a flaw, it can travel freely in the plane between membrane and structure until it finds an entry point metres away, making leaks almost impossible to trace and repair. Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF inverts this: it is laid adhesive-up before the pour, and the concrete itself becomes the bonding substrate, mechanically interlocking with the pressure-sensitive layer as it hydrates and cures. The result is a continuous, compartmentalised bond with no lateral migration path, which is precisely why it is trusted for BS 8102 Grade 3 (habitable, dry) basements. The verified physical properties support heavy-duty service: tensile strength of the film exceeds 25 MPa with elongation over 500% (ASTM D412), giving it the strain capacity to accommodate substrate settlement without rupturing; puncture resistance exceeds 1000 N (ASTM E154) for survival under rebar traffic and steel fixing during the works; peel adhesion to concrete exceeds 880 N/m (ASTM D903 modified), confirming the integral bond; and it withstands a hydrostatic head over 70 m (ASTM D751), far beyond any normal basement water table. Two site-critical details govern real-world success. First, the bond only develops if fresh concrete is placed in good contact, so the membrane must be clean, taut and undamaged at the moment of pour, and the concrete must be properly consolidated without sharp tamping tools. Second, the time between membrane/tape application and concreting matters: Fosroc recommends concrete be poured within 45 days of applying the Sealed Tape, and a minimum 10 N/mm² concrete strength before stripping any formwork the membrane was applied against.

Where it is used

  • Basement raft slabs and retaining walls of high-rise residential, commercial and mixed-use towers
  • Below-grade car parks, podiums and plant rooms requiring BS 8102 Grade 2/3 dryness
  • Water-retaining structures: underground tanks, sumps, lift pits and sewage/effluent chambers
  • Metro stations, underground box structures, cut-and-cover tunnels and underpasses
  • Foundations on contaminated or brownfield ground carrying hydrocarbons, salts and aggressive chemicals
  • Structures with high or fluctuating water tables in coastal and riverine cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata)
  • Diaphragm-wall, secant-pile and sheet-pile basements where the membrane is fixed to the shored face (zero-working-space condition)

Key advantages

  • Fully bonds to poured concrete, eliminating lateral water migration so any puncture stays localised and traceable
  • Pre-applied, primer-free, dry installation with no separate protection screed needed, keeping construction programmes flexible and fast
  • Remains in position even if the substrate settles, because it is keyed into the concrete rather than relying on the blinding
  • HDPE film resists ground salts, chemicals and hydrocarbons, protecting the concrete on aggressive and contaminated sites
  • Certified to BS 8102:2009 and IS 16471:2017 for Grade 1, 2 and 3 basement waterproofing protection
  • Self-adhesive selvedge gives sealed side laps without extra tape; weldable selvedge option for heat-fused joints
  • High puncture resistance (>1000 N) survives rebar fixing and site traffic before the pour
  • Long 36-month shelf life and a complete Fosroc ancillary ecosystem (Sealed Tape, waterstops, Proofex 3000) for full detailing

Limitations & considerations

  • Pre-applied only: the structural concrete must be cast directly against it, so it is not a solution for waterproofing an existing, already-cast structure (post-applied) without using Proofex 3000 on working-space walls
  • Bond integrity depends on good concrete contact and consolidation; honeycombing or poorly placed concrete weakens the integral seal
  • Time-sensitive: concrete should be poured within 45 days of applying the Sealed Tape, requiring coordinated sequencing between waterproofing and RCC works
  • Requires a float-finished, dry, frost-free blinding surface free of cavities, projecting ribs, laitance and contamination before laying
  • Vulnerable to mechanical damage from sharp backfill; protection boards are needed and backfill must exclude bricks, blocks or boulders larger than 50 mm
  • Penetrations and pipe entries demand careful bespoke detailing and should be referred to Fosroc, adding to supervision needs
  • Smooth-faced variant is optimised for flat/regular substrates; heavily profiled or irregular faces need extra mechanical anchoring on vertical sections

Selection & best practice

Treat the membrane as part of a system, not a single product. Lay it on a clean, dry, float-finished blinding with the release film removed only as you place each sheet, keeping the sheet taut and the adhesive face up toward the future pour. Maintain a 75 mm side overlap and stagger adjacent full rolls so end joints never build up in one line; seal all transverse end laps and tie-ins with 100 mm Fosroc HDPE Sealed Tape, rolling every overlap firmly with a hand roller to maximise adhesion. Detail every construction joint, penetration and pipe entry with the matching Fosroc hydrophilic or PVC waterstops and refer complex penetrations to Fosroc. Sequence the RCC works so concrete is poured within 45 days of taping, place and consolidate the concrete carefully without sharp tools, and never strip formwork the membrane was applied against until the concrete reaches at least 10 N/mm². Before backfilling, protect the membrane with boards and ensure backfill is free of sharp debris and objects over 50 mm. Store rolls flat, in original packaging, in cool dry shade away from sunlight, and have at least two people handle complete rolls.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF and a normal post-applied waterproofing membrane?
This is a pre-applied membrane: it is laid before the concrete is poured, with the adhesive facing up, so the fresh concrete bonds integrally into it. A post-applied membrane is stuck onto already-cured concrete. The pre-applied bond is what prevents water tracking sideways between the sheet and the slab, so leaks stay localised and the structure can meet BS 8102 Grade 3 dryness.
Does it need a primer or a separate protection layer?
No. One of its main advantages is a simple, dry installation with no primer and no separate protection screed required before concreting. You should, however, protect the laid membrane with boards before backfilling so sharp debris does not damage it.
What thicknesses and roll sizes are available?
Total membrane thickness is offered in 1.2 mm and 1.5 mm (with bare HDPE film of 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm respectively). Standard rolls are 1.2 m x 20 m and 2.4 m x 20 m. Space Arc Engineering can advise the right thickness for your water table and grade requirement.
What Indian and international standards does it comply with?
It is certified to BS 8102:2009 and IS 16471:2017, the codes of practice for protection of structures against water from the ground, and provides basement waterproofing protection to Grades 1, 2 and 3.
How soon must concrete be poured after laying the membrane?
Fosroc recommends that concrete is poured within 45 days of applying the HDPE Sealed Tape. Place and consolidate the concrete carefully, never use sharp tools against the membrane, and ensure at least 10 N/mm2 concrete strength before stripping any formwork it was applied against.
Can it be used on contaminated ground?
Yes. The HDPE film resists hydrocarbons, salts and aggressive chemicals, making it suitable for many contaminated and brownfield sites. For specific contaminants, consult Space Arc Engineering or the local Fosroc office for tailored advice and detailing.

How we position Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF

Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P(Smooth)RF competes in the premium pre-applied, fully-bonded membrane segment, where its closest cross-comparable is GCP/Grace Preprufe (the category originator) and Sika SikaProof A+ / Sika Bituseal pre-applied systems; STP’s Polysheet and Dr. Fixit’s pre-applied HDPE offerings address the same below-grade tanking need at varying price points. Within the Fosroc range itself it sits alongside Proofex 3000 (a self-adhesive bituminous HDPE sheet used for vertical working-space walls), Proofex Engage and the standard Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P, and is detailed with Fosroc hydrophilic and PVC waterstops plus HDPE Sealed Tape to form a complete system. Honestly positioned, this product is the right choice when you have a critical, high-water-table or contaminated-ground basement that must be cast against the membrane and held to BS 8102 Grade 2/3 dryness; it is not the economical pick for a simple, low-risk basement where a post-applied liquid membrane (such as Fosroc Brushbond, Dr. Fixit Newcoat, or an MBS/STP acrylic) would suffice, nor is it suited to waterproofing an existing structure. As an authorised Fosroc distributor for Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine stock, the full ancillary system and application guidance, and can advise objectively where a Sika, Dr. Fixit, MBS or STP alternative may better fit your budget and grade requirement.
