Fosroc Nitoproof A10
Single-component, water-based bitumen emulsion damp-proof membrane and vapour seal for concrete, masonry and below-ground structures.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, single-component, water-based bitumen emulsion that brushes onto concrete and masonry to form a seamless black damp-proof membrane and vapour seal.
Where is it used?
Below-ground concrete, foundation walls, plinth beams, retaining walls, basement and substructure faces, and as a sandwiched DPC layer beneath floor slabs and screeds.
Why use it?
It is economical, dries fast, bonds even to damp substrates and needs no heating or mixing, making it a low-skill, high-coverage barrier against rising damp and ground moisture.
How is it applied?
Apply by brush, broom or squeegee in one or two coats over a clean, sound surface (a thinned first coat acts as primer on porous substrates), allowing each coat to dry before the next.
About Fosroc Nitoproof A10
Fosroc Nitoproof A10 is a single-component, water-based bituminous waterproofing coating used as a damp-proof membrane (DPM) and vapour seal on concrete and masonry. It belongs to Fosroc’s long-established Nitoproof 10 family of bitumen-emulsion coatings, and the “A10” designation is the regional/market variant of that product. Chemically it is a blend of selected bitumens emulsified in water; once applied, the water phase evaporates and the bitumen coalesces into a continuous, flexible black film that bonds tightly to the substrate. Because it is water-based rather than solvent-based, it carries low odour, is non-flammable in the wet state and can be applied to surfaces that are still damp – a practical advantage on Indian sites where waiting for full substrate drying is rarely feasible. For contractors, consultants, architects and procurement teams across India, Nitoproof A10 occupies the value end of the waterproofing portfolio: it is the product you specify where you need reliable, economical protection against ground moisture and water-vapour transmission rather than a high-build, crack-bridging structural membrane. Typical uses include coating below-ground concrete and masonry, foundation and retaining-wall faces, plinth protection, and forming a sandwiched DPC beneath ground-bearing slabs and screeds. It is ready to use straight from the pack, requires no heating, no mixing and no specialist plant, and is applied by brush, broom or squeegee – which keeps labour costs low and makes it well suited to large below-ground surface areas. Being a brush/spray-applied liquid, it also self-seals around penetrations, construction joints and irregular masonry where sheet membranes are awkward to detail. Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof A10 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, with technical support, BOQ assistance and site guidance for projects in Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitoproof A10 comes from bitumen-emulsion chemistry: fine bitumen droplets are stabilised in water and, on application, the emulsion “breaks” as water evaporates and absorbs into the substrate, leaving the bitumen particles to coalesce into a cohesive black film. This is why two factors dominate site results – film build and curing conditions. A single brush coat is thin; the membrane’s effectiveness depends on achieving adequate dry-film thickness, which is why a minimum of two coats is the norm for damp-proofing duty, applied at right angles to each other to eliminate pinholes and missed spots. On porous concrete or masonry, the recommended practice is to thin the first coat with clean water to act as a penetrating primer that grips the substrate, then apply subsequent coats undiluted at full strength. Curing is purely by evaporation, so it is temperature- and humidity-dependent: warm, dry, well-ventilated conditions give fast drying, while cold, humid or enclosed below-ground spaces extend drying time and demand longer recoat intervals. The critical limitation engineers must respect is that an emulsion coating must dry before it can resist water – it should never be applied when rain is imminent or to surfaces with running water or hydrostatic pressure, because the uncured film will simply re-emulsify and wash off. As a barrier coating it is best understood as a vapour and damp-proofing layer with limited crack-bridging ability, not a high-elongation elastomeric membrane; where structural movement or positive water pressure is expected, a higher-grade Nitoproof polyurethane or cementitious system is the correct specification. Always work to the current local Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the exact A10 grade supplied, as published coverage, coat numbers and drying times vary by region and substrate.
Where it is used
- Damp-proof membrane (DPM) and vapour seal on below-ground concrete and masonry
- Protective coating to foundation faces, plinth beams and retaining walls
- Sandwiched damp-proof course (DPC) beneath ground-bearing floor slabs and screeds
- Vapour barrier on internal and external concrete and blockwork walls
- Backing/protective coating to buried concrete surfaces before backfilling
- Sealing of construction joints, masonry junctions and minor penetrations against ground moisture
- General waterproof priming/sealing of porous substrates ahead of further finishes
Key advantages
- Single-component and ready to use – no heating, mixing or specialist plant required
- Water-based: low odour, non-flammable when wet, easy clean-up with water
- Can be applied to damp (not wet) substrates, reducing site downtime
- Fast drying, allowing quick recoat and faster construction sequencing
- Economical with high coverage rates, ideal for large below-ground areas
- Excellent adhesion to concrete and masonry
- Seamless, self-detailing film that seals around penetrations and irregular surfaces
- Applied easily by brush, broom or squeegee with low-skill labour
Limitations & considerations
- Not designed to resist positive hydrostatic water pressure – it is a damp-proofing/vapour barrier, not a tanking membrane for standing water
- Limited crack-bridging and elongation compared with polyurethane or polymer-modified cementitious membranes
- Must dry fully before exposure to water; cannot be applied in rain or onto surfaces with running water, or the uncured emulsion will wash off
- Drying and recoat times lengthen significantly in cold, humid or poorly ventilated below-ground spaces
- Bitumen coatings can soften at high temperature and are not UV-stable, so exposed surfaces need protection or overcoating
- Should not be applied over surfaces contaminated with oil, grease, laitance or loose material without proper preparation
- Requires adequate film build (typically two coats) – a single thin coat is not sufficient for reliable damp-proofing
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate first: it must be sound, clean and free of dust, laitance, oil, grease and loose material, with surface defects and honeycombing made good. On porous concrete or masonry, prime by thinning the first coat with clean water so it penetrates and grips, then apply at least two full-strength coats by brush, broom or squeegee, laying the second coat at right angles to the first once it has dried, to eliminate pinholes. Do not apply when rain is expected, in standing water, or to frozen or visibly wet surfaces, and protect the freshly applied film from rain and traffic until fully cured. Where the coating will be buried, allow it to dry completely before careful backfilling and protect it from damage by sharp aggregate using a protection board or screed. Always cross-check coverage, coat numbers, drying times and primer dilution against the current local Fosroc Nitoproof A10 Technical Data Sheet and confirm the grade with Space Arc Engineering before ordering.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof A10
Nitoproof A10 sits at the economical, entry-level end of Fosroc’s waterproofing range – the right choice for below-ground damp-proofing and vapour control, but not for crack-bridging or pressurised water. Within the Fosroc portfolio it pairs naturally with primers and protection systems, and steps up to Fosroc’s polyurethane membranes (the Nitoproof 600/800/900 series), polymer-modified cementitious systems such as Brushbond, and integral admixtures like Conplast for water-resistant concrete where movement, traffic or hydrostatic pressure are involved. Against the broader Indian market, the closest competitors to a bitumen-emulsion DPM like A10 are Dr. Fixit’s bitumen-based dampproof coatings (e.g. Dr. Fixit Pidiproof / bitumen primer products), STP Ltd’s bituminous coatings, MBS (MYK LATICRETE / Maris Polymers) waterproofing emulsions, and Sika’s bituminous and cementitious damp-proofing lines such as the Sika BlackSeal and SikaTop ranges. The practical decision is one of duty: for simple, large-area protection against rising damp and ground vapour on a budget, a bitumen emulsion such as Nitoproof A10 is hard to beat on cost and ease of use; for guaranteed crack-bridging, UV exposure, trafficability or water under pressure, specify an elastomeric polyurethane or cementitious membrane instead. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering can help consultants and contractors select between A10 and these alternatives and supply the complete compatible system for the job.
