What is it?

A single-component, aromatic polyurethane liquid-applied membrane that cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture to form a continuous, jointless elastomeric waterproofing layer.

Where is it used?

Roofs, terraces, balconies, water-retaining structures and potable water tanks, basements, wet areas and other concrete or screeded substrates that need a seamless, flexible waterproof barrier.

Why use it?

It is seamless (no laps or welds to fail), water and frost resistant from -50C to +90C, vapour permeable, pedestrian trafficable once cured, easy to repair locally, and certified for contact with drinking water.

How is it applied?

Cold-applied by roller or airless spray over a primed, sound substrate, typically in two coats at 1.5-2.0 kg/m2 total, with each coat cross-applied to the previous one to build a uniform film.

About Fosroc Nitoproof 900

Fosroc Nitoproof 900 is a single-component, aromatic polyurethane liquid waterproofing membrane that is supplied ready to use and cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture. Once applied and cured, it forms a continuous, fully bonded elastomeric film with no joints, laps or seams – the principal weakness of preformed sheet systems. Because it is a cold-applied liquid, it follows the exact contours of the substrate and seals around upstands, drains, pipe penetrations and complex detailing where sheet membranes are difficult to dress in. For contractors and consultants across Delhi NCR and the rest of India, this makes Nitoproof 900 a practical choice on geometrically complicated decks, plant rooms and wet areas where reliable detailing matters more than raw speed. A defining feature of Nitoproof 900 within the wider Fosroc Nitoproof family is its suitability for contact with potable (drinking) water, certified under the European drinking-water framework (R.D. 140/2003 / 98/83/CE). This positions it specifically for the lining of water tanks, reservoirs and other water-retaining structures, in addition to conventional roof and terrace waterproofing – an application many general-purpose PU membranes are not approved for. The cured membrane is water and frost resistant across an operating range of -50C to +90C, remains permeable to water vapour so the substrate can breathe, and supports pedestrian foot traffic. It is also easy to maintain: if the membrane is mechanically damaged, the affected area can be cleaned, abraded and locally over-coated rather than requiring wholesale replacement, which keeps lifecycle and repair costs predictable for building owners and facility managers.

The technical insight

Nitoproof 900 belongs to the moisture-curing, single-component aromatic polyurethane class. Being single-component removes the on-site mixing-ratio errors that plague two-pack systems – there is no base-and-hardener proportioning, so each coat cures consistently as long as it is applied at the correct wet-film rate and within the manufacturer’s recoat window. The trade-off, common to all aromatic PUs, is that the resin is not inherently colour-stable under prolonged UV exposure: on permanently sun-exposed surfaces it will chalk and discolour over time even though its waterproofing performance is retained. Where a stable colour or enhanced trafficability is required on an exposed roof or balcony, Fosroc’s own approach (seen in the related Nitoproof 800 system) is to overlay the aromatic membrane with an aliphatic, UV-resistant topcoat such as Nitoproof UVR Topcoat. The vapour-permeable nature of the cured film is significant for green/young concrete and lightweight screeds, allowing residual substrate moisture to escape rather than building osmotic pressure under the membrane. As with every liquid-applied PU, the governing variables in the field are substrate dryness, surface soundness, correct priming and disciplined coverage – a membrane applied too thin to save material is the single most common cause of premature failure.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing of flat and pitched concrete roofs, terraces and podium decks
  • Lining of potable water tanks, reservoirs and other water-retaining structures (drinking-water certified)
  • Balconies, walkways and pedestrian-trafficked areas
  • Wet areas such as bathrooms, toilets and plant rooms beneath tiling or screeds
  • Below-grade and concealed waterproofing on sound concrete substrates
  • Detailing and sealing around upstands, drains, gutters and pipe penetrations where sheet membranes are hard to dress in
  • Re-waterproofing and refurbishment of existing sound substrates

Key advantages

  • Seamless, jointless membrane with no laps or welds that can fail
  • Single-component and ready to use – no on-site mixing ratios to get wrong
  • Certified for contact with potable / drinking water
  • Cold-applied by roller or airless spray, with no hot works or naked flame
  • Conforms to complex geometry, upstands and penetrations
  • Water and frost resistant across -50C to +90C operating range
  • Vapour permeable, allowing the substrate to breathe
  • Pedestrian trafficable once fully cured
  • Easily and locally repairable if mechanically damaged

Limitations & considerations

  • Aromatic PU is not inherently UV colour-stable – exposed surfaces may chalk/discolour over time and benefit from a UV-resistant topcoat (e.g. Nitoproof UVR Topcoat)
  • Performance depends heavily on a dry, sound, correctly primed substrate; it will not cure properly over damp or contaminated surfaces
  • Moisture-cure chemistry means cure speed and recoat times are affected by ambient temperature and humidity
  • Applied film must achieve the specified coverage rate – under-application to save material risks pinholing and early failure
  • Not a structural crack-bridging solution for live/moving structural joints without appropriate detailing
  • Liquid-applied wet-film thickness control requires a competent, trained applicator for consistent results

Selection & best practice

Always start with substrate preparation: the surface must be sound, clean, dry and free of laitance, oil and curing-compound residue, with all blowholes and cracks made good. Apply the appropriate Fosroc primer first and respect its overcoating window. Apply Nitoproof 900 in a minimum of two coats to reach the specified 1.5-2.0 kg/m2 total, applying the second coat at right angles to the first to eliminate pinholes and ensure uniform film build. Reinforce all corners, upstands, drains and penetrations with detailing tape/scrim bedded into the wet membrane. Where the finished surface will be permanently exposed to sunlight or needs a stable colour/trafficable finish, overcoat with a UV-resistant aliphatic topcoat. On potable water tanks, allow the manufacturer’s full cure period and carry out the recommended washing/flushing before the tank is put into service. Confirm the current India-specific datasheet, primer selection and coverage with Space Arc Engineering before specifying.

Frequently asked questions

What type of product is Fosroc Nitoproof 900?
It is a single-component, aromatic polyurethane liquid-applied waterproofing membrane. It is supplied ready to use and cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture to form a continuous, seamless elastomeric film – no mixing of a base and hardener is required.
Can Nitoproof 900 be used in drinking water tanks?
Yes. A key distinction of Nitoproof 900 is that it is certified as suitable for contact with potable (drinking) water under the European framework (R.D. 140/2003 / 98/83/CE), which makes it appropriate for lining water tanks and reservoirs. Always allow full cure and follow the recommended flushing procedure before the tank is put into service.
How much Nitoproof 900 do I need per square metre?
The typical consumption is 1.5-2.0 kg/m2 applied in two coats. Actual usage depends on substrate texture and porosity, so always allow for site conditions and confirm against the current India datasheet. Applying less than the specified rate to save material is the most common cause of pinholing and early failure.
How is it applied and does it need a primer?
It is cold-applied by roller or airless spray onto a sound, clean, dry, primed substrate. A suitable Fosroc primer should be used first, and the membrane is built up in a minimum of two coats with the second cross-applied at right angles to the first. No hot works or naked flame are involved.
Is Nitoproof 900 UV stable for exposed roofs?
As an aromatic polyurethane, the membrane is not inherently colour-stable and may chalk or discolour under prolonged direct sunlight, although it retains its waterproofing function. For permanently exposed surfaces, or where a stable colour and enhanced trafficability are needed, overcoat it with a UV-resistant aliphatic topcoat such as Fosroc Nitoproof UVR Topcoat.
How does Nitoproof 900 differ from Nitoproof 600 and the Nitoproof 800 system?
All are part of Fosroc’s liquid-applied PU waterproofing range. Nitoproof 600 is a pitch/bitumen-modified moisture-curing PU often used in concealed applications. The Nitoproof 800 system is a multi-coat polyurethane waterproofing and crack-bridging build-up (primer + membrane + UVR topcoat). Nitoproof 900 stands out as a single-component PU membrane that is certified for potable-water contact, making it the natural choice where water-tank lining is part of the scope.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 900

Within Fosroc’s liquid-applied polyurethane range, Nitoproof 900 sits as the single-component, potable-water-certified membrane – the option to reach for when the scope includes water-tank or reservoir lining alongside general deck waterproofing. It naturally cross-links with other Fosroc Nitoproof products: Nitoproof 600 / 600 PF (pitch-modified PU, widely used in India for concealed and below-tile waterproofing), the multi-coat Nitoproof 800 system with Nitoprime UR FS primer, and Nitoproof UVR Topcoat where a UV-stable, trafficable exposed finish is required. Compared with cementitious or acrylic systems, Nitoproof 900’s strength is true seamless elasticity and drinking-water approval; its trade-off is the UV behaviour of aromatic PU and a stronger dependence on substrate prep and applicator skill. Credible alternatives an Indian specifier may evaluate include Sika (Sikalastic liquid-applied PU membranes), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite’s PU and PU-hybrid coatings such as Roofseal), MBS/MYK (PU waterproofing membranes) and STP Limited; each offers comparable single- or two-component PU systems, so selection usually comes down to potable-water certification, the required exposed/topcoat build-up, project specification and local technical support. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can confirm the current India datasheet, correct primer and coverage, and supply or apply the full Nitoproof system for your project.
