Fosroc Nitoproof PU2000
A two-component, pitch-modified polyurethane liquid membrane engineered for seamless, chemically resistant waterproofing of below-grade and buried structures in aggressive soil and groundwater.
What is it?
A two-component, pitch-modified polyurethane liquid-applied membrane that cures into a tough, seamless, elastomeric waterproof barrier.
Where is it used?
Basements, foundations, retaining walls, buried slabs, tunnels and tanking applications exposed to corrosive soils and aggressive groundwater.
Why use it?
It combines the chemical and oxidation resistance of bitumen with the elasticity and adhesion of polyurethane, giving a jointless barrier that resists corrosive ground conditions without the cold-joint risks of sheet systems.
How is it applied?
Pre-weighed base and hardener are blended on site, a compatible primer is applied to the prepared substrate, and the membrane is brush, roller or squeegee applied in coats to the specified film thickness.
About Fosroc Nitoproof PU2000
Fosroc Nitoproof PU2000 is a two-component, liquid-applied waterproofing membrane built on a pitch-modified polyurethane chemistry — a hybrid combination of polyurethane resins blended with coal-tar/pitch fractions. It is supplied as a pre-weighed two-pack (base and hardener) that is mixed on site and cures through an irreversible chemical reaction into a tough, permanently flexible, elastomeric membrane. The deliberate marriage of polyurethane and pitch is what defines the product: the polyurethane backbone delivers high elongation, strong adhesion and crack-bridging, while the pitch fraction adds the impermeability and resistance to corrosive ground chemistry that buried structures demand. The result is a fully bonded, jointless barrier with no laps or seams for water to track behind.\n\nWithin the Fosroc Nitoproof family, PU2000 sits firmly in the below-grade / structural-protection niche. Where pitch-free grades such as Nitoproof 600PF and Nitoproof 650PU are positioned for exposed roofs, podiums and balconies where colour and UV behaviour matter, the pitch-modified PU2000 is aimed at tanking and protection of structures in contact with soil and groundwater — basements, foundation rafts, retaining walls, buried tanks and the like. For Indian contractors, consultants and architects, that makes it a specialist product to specify when the design driver is aggressive ground conditions rather than trafficked or sun-exposed surfaces.\n\nSpace Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India. We supply Nitoproof PU2000 alongside the compatible Fosroc primers, reinforcing fleece and ancillary products needed for a warranted system, and can provide site-specific method statements, application supervision and trained applicator crews.
The technical insight
The engineering logic of PU2000 lives in the word ‘pitch-modified’. Pure pitch/bitumen coatings are impermeable and cheap but become brittle, oxidise and can soften and flow at elevated temperature. Pure polyurethane membranes are elastic and tough but cost more. By chemically combining the two, Fosroc targets a membrane that keeps polyurethane’s elongation and adhesion while gaining the barrier performance and economy of pitch — and, critically, because the cure is an irreversible chemical reaction rather than a solvent-flash or thermoplastic set, the cured film does not re-melt or flow at high in-ground temperatures the way a thermoplastic bitumen would. The two-component, pre-weighed format matters on Indian sites: it removes the guesswork of field batching, so the hardener ratio that drives the cure is correct every pour. Because it is liquid-applied and fully bonded, water cannot migrate laterally between the membrane and the structure — a failure mode that plagues loose-laid sheet systems where a single puncture lets water travel far from the leak. The practical trade-off is that pitch chemistry is dark and not UV-stable, so PU2000 is a buried/protected-membrane product, not a finish coat; it must be backfilled or screeded over rather than left exposed.
Where it is used
- Tanking of basements and below-ground structures against soil moisture and groundwater
- Waterproofing of foundation rafts, footings and pile caps before backfilling
- Protection of concrete retaining walls and earth-retaining structures in aggressive soils
- Buried water-retaining and water-excluding tanks, sumps and inspection pits
- Tunnel linings and cut-and-cover structures requiring a seamless bonded membrane
- Bridge abutments and buried civil structures exposed to corrosive ground conditions
- Protection of concrete against sulphate- and chloride-bearing soils and contaminated ground
Key advantages
- Seamless and jointless — liquid application eliminates the laps and cold joints that are the weak points of sheet membranes
- Fully bonded to the substrate, preventing lateral migration of water if the membrane is locally damaged
- High elasticity and crack-bridging accommodate substrate movement and shrinkage cracking
- Pitch modification gives excellent impermeability and resistance to corrosive, aggressive ground conditions
- Irreversible chemical cure means the cured film will not melt or flow at elevated in-ground temperatures
- Pre-weighed two-pack removes field-batching error and gives consistent cure
- Excellent adhesion to concrete, blockwork and most structural substrates after correct priming
- Simplifies detailing at penetrations, upstands and complex geometry where sheets are hard to dress
- Repairable — local mechanical damage can be over-coated with fresh material to re-establish continuity
Limitations & considerations
- Not UV-stable and dark in colour — it is a buried/protected membrane and must not be left permanently exposed to sunlight
- Requires a protection layer (board, screed or backfill protection) before and during backfilling to avoid mechanical damage
- Substrate must be sound, clean and prepared, and a compatible Fosroc primer is required for reliable adhesion
- Damp or green concrete, standing water and high substrate moisture can compromise cure and adhesion — substrate condition must be verified
- Pitch/coal-tar chemistry means it is generally not suitable for potable-water contact or food-contact tanks
- Pot life is limited once mixed; material must be applied within the working time and at correct ambient/substrate temperatures
- Two-component mixing and film-thickness control demand a trained applicator to achieve the specified DFT uniformly
Selection & best practice
Treat PU2000 as a system, not just a coating. Start with a sound, cured, dry substrate: cut back laitance, fill blowholes and form coved fillets at wall-to-floor junctions, then prime with the Fosroc-recommended primer and allow it to develop tack before coating. Mix the full pre-weighed base and hardener together — never part-batch by eye — using a slow-speed paddle, and apply within the stated pot life. Build the membrane in the specified number of coats to the target dry film thickness, embedding reinforcing fleece at construction joints, internal corners and around penetrations for added robustness. Verify wet-film thickness as you go and check for pinholes before overcoating. Always confirm the exact primer, coverage, coat count, film thickness, overcoat interval and substrate-moisture limits against the current regional Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for your market before specifying or applying, and protect the cured membrane with a board or screed before backfilling. For consultant-driven projects, Space Arc Engineering can issue a project-specific method statement and provide trained applicators.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof PU2000
Nitoproof PU2000 occupies the structural-protection / tanking end of the Fosroc Nitoproof range. It pairs naturally with the Fosroc system around it — a compatible Fosroc primer, Nitobond bonding aids, Renderoc repair mortars for substrate reinstatement, and Conplast/Proofex products elsewhere on the same structure. Where the requirement shifts to an exposed, UV-stable or coloured membrane for roofs, podiums and balconies, the closely related pitch-free grades Nitoproof 600PF and Nitoproof 650PU are the better Fosroc choices, while Proofex sheet membranes remain the alternative where a preformed bonded sheet is preferred for tanking. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a specifier might weigh include Sika’s PU and bituminous-PU liquid membranes and Sikaproof tanking systems, MBS (MYK Laticrete / MBS Pidilite-adjacent) liquid membranes, Dr. Fixit’s Pidiproof and Newcoat PU ranges from Pidilite, and STP Limited’s bituminous and PU coatings. PU2000’s distinct edge is the pitch-modified PU chemistry tuned specifically for bonded, seamless protection of buried concrete in aggressive ground — a more specialised brief than a general-purpose roof membrane.
