Fosroc Nitobond SBR 202
Single-component styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) latex that bonds new-to-old concrete and modifies site-batched mortars, screeds and renders for durable, waterproof, freeze/thaw-resistant repairs.
What is it?
A single-component, ready-to-use white SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) emulsion that works both as a bonding agent between old and new concrete and as a gauging admixture that modifies site-batched cementitious mortars, screeds, renders and slurries.
Where is it used?
Concrete repair and rehabilitation works, waterproof renders and plasters, polymer-modified floor screeds and toppings, and bonding of slip bricks, tiles and stone across buildings, water-retaining structures and infrastructure in Delhi NCR and pan-India.
Why use it?
It delivers an excellent bond to concrete, masonry, plaster and stonework, improves tensile and flexural strength to allow thin applications, reduces permeability for waterproof repairs, and improves freeze/thaw and weathering durability, all from a chloride-free, easily gauged liquid.
How is it applied?
Used two ways: brushed/scrubbed into a primed substrate as a 1:1:3 SBR:water:cement slurry bond coat, and gauged into the mortar/screed mix (typically 5-9 litres per 50 kg cement) which is then applied wet-on-wet onto the still-wet slurry primer and cured.
About Fosroc Nitobond SBR 202
Fosroc Nitobond SBR 202 is part of the well-established Nitobond SBR family of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) latex bonding aids and mortar modifiers manufactured by Fosroc. Supplied as a ready-to-use white liquid, it is a single-component product that is simply gauged into the mix as required, which makes it forgiving on site compared with two-pack systems. Chemically it is a modified styrene butadiene rubber emulsion that is resistant to hydrolysis, so it performs reliably in both internal and external applications when used in conjunction with cement. The SBR 202 designation sits within the Nitobond SBR range positioned as an economical, general-purpose grade for improving and bonding floor toppings, renderings and mortars; repairing worn, damaged and spalled concrete; repairing large cracks; producing polymer-modified floor screeds; and forming waterproof renders and slurries. Because cementitious mortars are alkaline, repairs made with a Nitobond SBR-modified mortar also help protect embedded steel reinforcement. In Indian practice the same chemistry is widely specified for new-to-old concrete bonding on structural repair projects, for waterproof plaster on masonry, and as a screed modifier where a tougher, less permeable and better-adhered topping is needed. For contractors, consultants and procurement teams in Delhi NCR and across India, it is a familiar, code-referenced product that consolidates bonding and mortar-modification duties into one drum.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitobond SBR comes from how the SBR polymer film co-cures with the cement matrix. As the mortar hydrates, the latex coalesces into a continuous polymer film that bridges micro-cracks, plasticises the mix and dramatically lowers water demand. The Fosroc India data sheet illustrates this clearly: a 1:3 cement:sand control mortar runs at a water/cement ratio of 0.45, whereas the same mortar gauged with 5 litres of Nitobond SBR per 50 kg cement is mixed at W/C 0.35. That lower W/C plus the polymer film is what raises 28-day flexural strength from around 5.0 to 6.5 N/mm2 and tensile strength from 2.5 to 3.5 N/mm2 (tested to BS 6319, wet cured), while simultaneously cutting permeability. The bond mechanism relies on a wet-on-wet sequence: the 1:1:3 (SBR:water:cement) slurry primer is scrubbed into a pre-soaked, saturated-surface-dry substrate, and the modified mortar must be placed before that slurry skins over. If the primer is allowed to dry, the polymer bridge is broken and the slurry must be removed and the area re-primed. The product contains no chloride admixtures, so it does not introduce a corrosion risk to reinforcement, and being hydrolysis-resistant it tolerates damp external exposure better than re-emulsifiable PVA bonders.
Where it is used
- New-to-old concrete bonding coat ahead of patch repairs to worn, spalled or damaged concrete
- Polymer-modified repair mortars for vertical, horizontal and overhead structural repair
- Heavy-duty polymer-modified floor screeds and toppings with improved abrasion and adhesion
- Waterproof renders, plasters and slurry coats on masonry and concrete
- Repair of large cracks and reprofiling of damaged concrete sections
- Bonding mortar for fixing slip bricks, ceramic tiles, stone and similar units
- Improving cohesion, workability and impermeability of site-batched cementitious mixes
- Re-screeding and topping repairs where a thin, well-bonded section is required
Key advantages
- Single-component liquid, simply gauged as required – no two-pack mixing on site
- Excellent bond to concrete, masonry, stonework, plaster and blockwork
- Improved tensile and flexural properties allow thin, feather-resistant applications
- Produces waterproof repairs, renders and toppings with reduced permeability
- High resistance to freeze/thaw cycling and improved weather durability
- Resistant to hydrolysis, so suitable for both internal and external use
- Contains no chloride admixtures – safe over and around embedded reinforcement
- Compatible with all common hydraulic (Portland) cements
- Economical, general-purpose grade for everyday repair and screeding work
Limitations & considerations
- Not a standalone waterproofing membrane – it modifies cementitious mortar, it is not a coating system on its own
- Wet-on-wet discipline is critical; if the slurry primer dries before the mortar is placed it must be removed and the area re-primed
- Should not be applied below the minimum application temperature (10 C per Fosroc India guidance) or when temperature is falling toward 5 C
- Uncured mortar must be protected from frost, moving water and heavy rainfall before final set to avoid surface scour
- Cementitious mortars made with it have only limited chemical resistance; for aggressive chemical exposure a dedicated protective coating is required
- For applications needing a permanent substrate barrier or permanently damp conditions, an epoxy bonding aid such as Nitobond EP may be more appropriate
- Performance depends on correct mix water adjustment for site sand moisture – over-watering reduces strength
- Cured material can only be removed mechanically; clean tools with water immediately after use
Selection & best practice
Saw-cut and break out the repair area to a sound, square edge (minimum depth around 6-10 mm) and remove all dust, laitance, oil and corrosion by mechanical means or grit-blasting. Prime exposed reinforcement with a Fosroc zinc-rich primer (Nitozinc Primer / Nitoprime Zincrich) and allow to dry. Pre-soak the concrete substrate to a saturated-surface-dry condition, remove excess water, then scrub in a slurry primer of 1 volume Nitobond SBR : 1 volume clean water : 3 volumes fresh cement, blending cement slowly into the liquids and stirring frequently to offset settlement. Place the modified mortar or screed wet-on-wet before the slurry skins; if it dries, remove and re-prime. Gauge the mortar at roughly 5-9 litres of Nitobond SBR per 50 kg cement with Zone II sand, keeping added water to the minimum needed for a semi-dry cohesive consistency. Use a forced-action mixer, dry-blend for about 1 minute, then mix in the SBR and water for around 3 minutes. Cure immediately and thoroughly with a Fosroc curing compound (e.g. Concure) and protect from frost, moving water and rapid drying until set. Always confirm exact dosages, thicknesses and primer system against the current local Fosroc India technical data sheet for the project.

How we position Fosroc Nitobond SBR 202
Within the Fosroc concrete-repair ecosystem, Nitobond SBR 202 is the economical, general-purpose SBR latex grade that pairs naturally with companion products Space Arc supplies: Nitozinc Primer (zinc-rich reinforcement primer), the Renderoc range of repair mortars, Concure curing compounds, and for jobs needing a tougher chemical or moisture barrier, the epoxy bonding aid Nitobond EP. Where the requirement is purely SBR-based bonding plus mortar modification, SBR 202 is the workhorse; where a permanent substrate barrier or permanently damp service is involved, Nitobond EP is the better Fosroc choice. Against the wider Indian market it competes with Sika Latex / SikaTop bonding agents, MBS (BASF/Master Builders Solutions) MasterEmaco and MasterTile SBR-type bonders, Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP and Bond Aid from Pidilite, and STP (Shalimar/Krishna) SBR latexes – all credible alternatives that occupy the same SBR-latex bonding-and-modifier niche. The Fosroc advantage is the depth of its repair-system catalogue, code-referenced BS 6319 performance data, and nationwide technical support; for specifiers already detailing a Fosroc repair sequence (prime, bond, repair mortar, cure), staying within the Nitobond/Renderoc/Concure system keeps compatibility and warranty cleanest. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply Nitobond SBR 202 alongside the full primer-mortar-cure system and advise on the correct grade for each repair.
