What is it?

A single-component, water-based bitumen emulsion reinforced with rubber (approx. 10% rubber content) that dries from a dark-brown liquid into a black, flexible, seamless waterproof membrane.

Where is it used?

Below-ground concrete and masonry, sandwich-construction damp proof membranes, internal and external walls and floors, and as a dual-purpose waterproofer-cum-curing compound on fresh slabs.

Why use it?

It waterproofs, cures and acts as a vapour seal in a single non-toxic, non-flammable application that can be used in confined spaces and resists chloride and sulphate attack.

How is it applied?

Stir well and apply by brush or squeegee directly to a clean, dry substrate at 1 m2 per litre to build a minimum 600-micron dry film; vertical work is laid in coats of max 200 microns each.

About Fosroc Nitoproof 30

Fosroc Nitoproof 30 (formerly Nitoproof 30HL) is a multi-purpose, rubberised bitumen emulsion engineered for cost-effective, labour-saving waterproofing of below-ground and concealed concrete and masonry surfaces. Supplied as a single-component liquid, it is dark brown when wet and cures to a continuous, black, flexible coating with no joints or laps to fail. Because it is water-based, the product is non-toxic, non-flammable, asbestos-free and safe to use in confined and poorly ventilated spaces such as lift pits, basements and inspection chambers, where solvent-borne bituminous coatings would be unsuitable.

For Indian contractors and consultants, the appeal of Nitoproof 30 is its versatility. The same drum can serve as a damp proof membrane in sandwich (blinding) construction, a general-purpose waterproofer for plinths, retaining walls and floors, a vapour barrier beneath screeds and finishes, a concrete curing compound, and even an adhesive for bonding insulation boards, cork and expanded polystyrene. This consolidation reduces the number of products that have to be procured, stored and managed on site, which matters on fast-track residential, commercial and infrastructure jobs across Delhi NCR and the rest of India.

The membrane is rubber-reinforced, giving it the extensibility needed to bridge fine shrinkage cracks and to accommodate minor substrate movement. It can be applied to green (freshly cured) concrete, so the waterproofing and curing operations can be merged, shortening the construction programme. Its resistance to chloride and sulphate ions makes it well-suited to aggressive ground conditions common in coastal belts and areas with sulphate-bearing soils. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Nitoproof 30 in 20 and 200 litre drums together with on-site technical guidance.

The technical insight

The performance of Nitoproof 30 is governed by achieving the correct dry film thickness (DFT) rather than simply wetting the surface. At a spreading rate of 1 m2 per litre, the cured film reaches a minimum DFT of 600 microns, which is the threshold at which it functions as a damp proof membrane in line with CP102:1973. Because the emulsion is roughly 60% solids by content, a generous wet coat is needed to leave 600 microns behind once the water phase evaporates, so coverage figures are theoretical and will fall in practice on porous or textured substrates. On vertical faces the same 600-micron target is built up in multiple coats of no more than 200 microns each to prevent sag and run, with each successive coat laid at right angles to the previous one for full, pinhole-free coverage. When the product is used purely as a curing compound the economics flip: at 4 m2 per litre per coat it forms a thinner 150-micron film that meets the moisture-retention requirements of ASTM C309. Drying is rapid, around 30 minutes at 25 degrees C, with overcoating possible after roughly 1 hour, but the ambient window matters – application must stay between 6 degrees C and 45 degrees C, and windy conditions should be avoided because surface skinning over a still-wet film can cause cracking.

Where it is used

  • Tanking and waterproofing of below-ground concrete – basement walls, retaining walls, plinth beams and foundations
  • Damp proof membrane in sandwich (blinding) construction beneath ground-floor slabs
  • Dual-purpose waterproofer and concrete curing compound applied to green slabs in a single operation
  • Vapour barrier and damp proofing on internal and external walls and floors before plaster, render or screed
  • Bonding and adhesive coat for cork panels, fibreboard, expanded polystyrene and other insulation boards to walls and floors
  • Waterproof adhesive for laying wood blocks, cork, asphalt and tiles on floor screeds
  • Protective vapour seal in lift pits, inspection chambers and other confined wet areas

Key advantages

  • Single-component and ready to use – no mixing, gauging or catalyst required, reducing site error
  • Water-based, non-toxic, non-flammable and asbestos-free, so it can be used safely in confined and unventilated spaces
  • Combines waterproofing and curing in one application, saving both material cost and labour
  • Rubber-reinforced and highly extensible, bridging fine cracks and tolerating minor movement
  • Resistant to chloride and sulphate ions, suiting aggressive soils and coastal environments
  • Can be applied to green (freshly placed) concrete, allowing programmes to be compressed
  • Seamless, jointless brush- or squeegee-applied membrane with easy local repair and overcoating
  • Fast drying – touch-dry in about 30 minutes and overcoatable within roughly an hour at 25 degrees C

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a structural adhesive – mechanical fixing must be used where load-bearing bonding is required
  • Application must not start below 6 degrees C or above 45 degrees C, limiting peak-summer and cold-morning work windows
  • Should not be applied during windy conditions, which can cause skinning and cracking of the film
  • A bitumen emulsion, so it is intended for concealed/protected and below-ground use, not as a permanently UV-exposed wearing coat
  • For harsh climatic conditions Fosroc recommends the more robust Nitoproof 600 instead
  • Substrates must be clean, dry and free of dust, oil and grease for the membrane to adhere
  • Theoretical coverage of 1 m2/litre will reduce on porous or rough substrates, so material estimates must allow wastage
  • Where a render or plaster finish follows, the second coat must be gritted with sand and given a minimum 48-hour dry before plastering

Selection & best practice

Start with thorough surface preparation: the substrate must be clean, dry and free from dust, oil, grease and laitance. Stir the drum well before use and keep the lid replaced when not pouring. For a damp proof membrane, apply at 1 m2 per litre to build a minimum 600-micron DFT; on vertical surfaces work in multiple coats of no more than 200 microns each, laying the second coat at right angles to the first and carrying every application up the wall to meet the existing damp proof course. Maintain the ambient temperature between 6 and 45 degrees C and avoid windy weather. Where a plaster, render or screed will follow, grit the second coat with clean dry sand to form a key and allow at least 48 hours of drying before the finish is applied. Protect the cured membrane from puncture during back-filling and follow-on trades, and make good any damage by re-coating the prepared area. Clean tools and spills with clean water while still wet; once dry, Fosroc Solvent 102 is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoproof 30 a real, current Fosroc product?
Yes. Nitoproof 30 (formerly Nitoproof 30HL) is a genuine Fosroc product – a single-component, rubber-reinforced bitumen emulsion listed on fosroc.com with a published technical data sheet. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor.
How much Nitoproof 30 do I need – what is the coverage?
For a damp proof membrane or general waterproofing, apply at 1 m2 per litre to achieve a minimum 600-micron dry film. As a curing compound it covers 4 m2 per litre per coat for a 150-micron film. These are theoretical figures; allow extra for porous or rough substrates.
Can Nitoproof 30 be used as a curing compound?
Yes. It is a dual-purpose waterproofer and curing compound, and complies with the concrete curing requirements of ASTM C309 when applied at 4 m2 per litre. On a fresh slab the same product can both cure and waterproof in one operation.
What pack sizes are available and what is the shelf life?
Nitoproof 30 is supplied in 20 litre and 200 litre drums. It has a minimum shelf life of 12 months when stored in normal warehouse conditions below 40 degrees C, in unopened containers.
Is Nitoproof 30 suitable for exposed roof or terrace waterproofing?
It is a concealed and below-ground membrane, not a UV-stable exposed roof coat. For terraces, podiums and harsh weather exposure, consider Fosroc’s Brushbond range or Nitoproof 600. Space Arc can advise on the correct system for an exposed application.
What temperature limits apply during application?
Application should not begin below 6 degrees C or above 45 degrees C, and you should avoid windy conditions, which can skin the surface and cause cracking. Surfaces must be clean and dry, and drying takes about 30 minutes at 25 degrees C with overcoating after roughly 1 hour.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 30

Nitoproof 30 sits at the economical, general-purpose end of the Fosroc bituminous waterproofing range, best understood as the workhorse damp proof membrane and curing emulsion for concealed, below-ground concrete. Within the Fosroc family it pairs naturally with Nitoproof 30F (a cellulose-fibre-reinforced version for thicker single-coat builds) and steps up to Nitoproof 600 for harsh climatic conditions, while Fosroc’s Brushbond cementitious and acrylic membranes are the right choice for exposed wet areas, terraces and water tanks. Where the substrate needs a primer or where the membrane meets construction joints, it is typically used alongside Fosroc Conbextra grouts and Nitoseal sealants. Against the wider Indian market, contractors will weigh it against comparable rubberised bitumen emulsions such as Sika’s Igolflex/bituminous range, Dr. Fixit Pidiproof and Bharat Petroleum/MYK and STP (Shalimar) bituminous coatings, and MBS Pidilite-class products. Nitoproof 30’s differentiators are the trusted Fosroc specification pedigree, its genuine dual waterproofer-plus-curing economy, confined-space safety as a non-flammable water-based emulsion, and consistent quality – factors that matter when a consultant has specified Fosroc by name. For projects demanding higher elongation, exposed-surface durability or polyurethane/polyurea performance, Space Arc can cross-specify the appropriate Fosroc or alternative system rather than overstretching Nitoproof 30 beyond its concealed, below-ground design intent.
