What is it?

A 100% virgin polypropylene micro-fibre, free of recycled olefins, dosed into the mix as a secondary crack-control reinforcement for cementitious materials.

Where is it used?

Floor slabs, screeds, pavements, precast units, shotcrete, renders, mortars and plaster on Indian sites where early-age cracking and surface durability matter.

Why use it?

It distributes millions of fine fibres through the matrix to bridge micro-cracks as they form during the first hours of curing, cutting plastic-shrinkage cracking and improving surface integrity, impact resistance and cohesion.

How is it applied?

Added to the mix water or directly to the mixer along with aggregates; the fibres disperse uniformly into a monofilament network without balling, then the concrete or mortar is placed, finished and cured as normal.

About Fosroc PPF

Fosroc PPF is a graded polypropylene micro-fibre engineered as a crack-controlling additive for concrete, mortar, screed and plaster. According to Fosroc’s published product information, it is a high-performance, 100% virgin polypropylene fibre that contains no recycled olefin materials, manufactured under controlled conditions from selected raw materials to deliver a consistent, repeatable product batch to batch. Unlike steel mesh or rebar — which provide structural, load-bearing reinforcement — PPF works at the micro scale: when blended into a fresh mix it opens up into millions of fine, individual filaments that occupy the matrix in three dimensions and physically bridge the micro-cracks that form during the most vulnerable early hours of curing.

The cracks PPF is designed to fight are the ones that appear before concrete has gained any meaningful strength. In the Indian climate — high ambient temperatures across the plains, dry winds in the NCR winter, low humidity, and fast surface evaporation on exposed slabs and renders — plastic-shrinkage cracking is a chronic problem. Water leaves the surface faster than bleed water can rise, the surface skin shrinks while the body below does not, and random map-pattern or parallel cracks open up within the first one to eight hours. PPF intercepts this mechanism. The fibre network increases the tensile capacity of the still-plastic mix just enough to hold the surface together until the concrete is strong enough to resist the stresses on its own.

Fosroc supplies PPF in a range of cut lengths so it can be matched to the application. The published lengths are 19 mm (F type, intended for concrete floors), 12 mm (M type, for stamped and decorative concrete), and 3 mm and 6 mm (M type, for mortar mixes and plaster). The longer fibres suit larger-aggregate structural and flooring concrete, while the short fibres disperse cleanly through fine renders and bedding mortars without showing on the finished face. Because polypropylene is chemically inert and highly alkali-resistant, the fibres are unaffected by the high-pH pore solution inside concrete and do not corrode the way steel can — so there are no rust staining or spalling issues at the surface even where fibres are exposed.

For Space Arc Engineering’s customers — RMC plants, contractors, precasters and applicators across Delhi NCR and Pan-India — PPF is one of the simplest, lowest-cost durability upgrades available. It is added at the batching stage, needs no change to placing or finishing practice, and delivers a measurable reduction in early cracking, better cohesion for pumping and shotcreting, and improved resistance to surface abrasion and impact. It is a quality-of-finish and durability product, not a substitute for designed structural reinforcement.

The technical insight

The engineering value of Fosroc PPF lies entirely in the early-age, plastic phase of the concrete. In the first few hours, fresh concrete has negligible tensile strength, yet it is subjected to tensile stress as the surface dries and shrinks faster than the interior. A uniformly dispersed network of fine polypropylene monofilaments provides a very large total surface area and an enormous number of crack-bridging sites per cubic metre. When a micro-crack tries to propagate, fibres spanning it carry the load across the gap and arrest or redistribute it into many harmless hairlines instead of a few visible cracks. Polypropylene’s near-1.0 specific gravity (around 0.90–0.91) means the fibres neither sink nor float, so they stay evenly distributed through the depth of the section. Its inertness and high alkali resistance mean the reinforcement survives indefinitely in the aggressive high-pH concrete environment, unlike natural or steel fibres. It is important to be precise about what PPF does not do: at normal secondary-control dosages it does not increase the compressive or flexural design strength of hardened concrete, does not replace structural steel, and does not act as a waterproofing additive. Its contribution is crack mitigation, cohesion, abrasion/impact resistance and reduced segregation. A secondary, often-cited benefit is improved fire spalling performance — polypropylene fibres melt at a low temperature and leave micro-channels that relieve steam pressure in concrete exposed to fire, though specifiers should confirm fire-related claims against the project-specific Fosroc datasheet and applicable test data.

Where it is used

  • Industrial and warehouse floor slabs and toppings prone to plastic-shrinkage cracking
  • Cement screeds and floor toppings over slabs, including bonded and unbonded screeds
  • Stamped, patterned and decorative concrete where surface cracking must be minimised
  • Sprayed concrete and shotcrete for slope stabilisation, tunnels and repair overlays
  • Precast concrete units, panels and elements needing reduced early cracking and better edge integrity
  • External renders, plaster and cementitious bedding mortars on masonry
  • Pavements, hardstandings, parking decks and external slabs exposed to sun and wind
  • Repair mortars and overlays where reduced shrinkage cracking improves durability

Key advantages

  • 100% virgin polypropylene with no recycled olefin content, giving consistent, predictable performance
  • Reduces plastic-shrinkage, premature-drying and early-thermal cracking in the critical first hours of curing
  • Chemically inert and highly alkali-resistant — will not corrode or cause rust staining like steel
  • Available in 3, 6, 12 and 19 mm lengths to suit plaster, mortar, decorative concrete and floors
  • Disperses into millions of fine monofilaments for uniform three-dimensional crack control
  • Improves mix cohesion, reduces segregation and bleeding, and aids pumpability and shotcrete build
  • Enhances surface impact and abrasion resistance and overall finish integrity
  • Simple to use — added at batching with no change to placing, finishing or curing practice
  • Manufactured under controlled conditions for batch-to-batch consistency

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a structural reinforcement — does not replace designed steel rebar, mesh or load-bearing fibre systems
  • At standard secondary-control dosages it does not raise the compressive or flexural design strength of concrete
  • Controls early-age cracking but is not a cure for cracking caused by poor curing, overwatering or bad mix design
  • Not a waterproofing admixture; it does not make concrete watertight on its own
  • Correct dosage, fibre length and thorough mixing are essential — under-mixing can cause balling and poor dispersion
  • Proper curing remains mandatory; fibres reduce but do not eliminate the need to protect against rapid drying
  • Exact dosage, specific gravity, melting point and compliance figures must be confirmed against the current country-specific Fosroc PPF datasheet before specification

Selection & best practice

Select the fibre length to match the work — 19 mm (F type) for floor concrete, 12 mm for stamped/decorative concrete, and 3 or 6 mm for mortars and plaster — and always confirm the dosage rate against the current Fosroc PPF technical data sheet for your country and mix. Add the fibres to the mixer with the aggregates or via the mix water and mix long enough to fully disperse them into individual monofilaments before placing; do not add a fibre charge to an already-discharged batch. Keep batching, placing and finishing practice otherwise unchanged, and never reduce water-cement ratio expecting fibres to compensate. Crucially, PPF supplements but does not replace good curing — protect freshly placed surfaces from sun and wind, apply a Fosroc curing compound such as Concure where appropriate, and water-cure as specified. For structural crack control or load distribution, design and detail conventional reinforcement separately. For trial mixes, mock-ups, dosage confirmation and site support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply Fosroc PPF and the matching curing and admixture range.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fosroc PPF used for?
Fosroc PPF is a polypropylene micro-fibre added to concrete, mortar, screed and plaster to control early-age cracking — specifically plastic-shrinkage, premature-drying and early-thermal cracks. It disperses into millions of fine fibres that bridge micro-cracks while the mix is still curing, improving surface integrity, cohesion and durability.
Does Fosroc PPF replace steel reinforcement?
No. PPF is a secondary crack-control fibre, not a structural reinforcement. It does not carry design loads and does not replace rebar, mesh or structural fibre systems. It works alongside conventional reinforcement to reduce early-age surface cracking, while structural strength and load distribution stay with the designed steel.
Which fibre length should I choose?
Match the length to the work: 19 mm (F type) for concrete floors, 12 mm (M type) for stamped and decorative concrete, and 3 mm or 6 mm (M type) for mortar mixes and plaster. The short fibres disperse cleanly through fine renders without showing on the finished face.
What dosage of Fosroc PPF should be used?
Dosage depends on the application, fibre length and mix, so it should always be confirmed against the current country-specific Fosroc PPF technical data sheet rather than a generic figure. Space Arc Engineering can advise on dosage and supply trial-mix support for your project.
Will the polypropylene fibres corrode or stain the surface?
No. Polypropylene is chemically inert and highly alkali-resistant, so the fibres are unaffected by the high-pH environment inside concrete. Unlike steel, they do not corrode and will not cause rust staining or spalling, even where fibres are exposed at the surface.
Does Fosroc PPF make concrete waterproof or stronger?
Not directly. PPF is a crack-control and durability admixture, not a waterproofing additive, and at normal dosages it does not increase compressive or flexural design strength. For waterproofing use Fosroc systems such as the Nitoproof range or an integral admixture; for strength, rely on mix design and structural reinforcement.

How we position Fosroc PPF

Fosroc PPF sits in Fosroc’s admixtures and crack-control range as the entry point for secondary, micro-fibre reinforcement — distinct from structural macro-fibre or steel-fibre systems. On site it pairs naturally with Fosroc curing compounds (Concure range), Conplast water-reducing and superplasticising admixtures, and, where waterproofing is needed, the Nitoproof and integral-waterproofing products rather than relying on the fibre itself. Against the wider market it competes directly with general-purpose polypropylene micro-fibres such as Sika’s Fibre PPM / SikaFibre range, BASF/Master Builders Solutions MasterFiber, Dr. Fixit’s polypropylene fibre offerings, and STP/other Indian fibre suppliers. The honest positioning for Indian buyers: most virgin polypropylene micro-fibres deliver broadly comparable early-crack control, so the practical advantages of specifying Fosroc PPF are the assurance of 100% virgin (non-recycled) polypropylene, controlled batch consistency, the matched length range from 3 mm plaster fibre up to 19 mm floor fibre, and integration with the rest of the Fosroc concrete-admixture and curing system through an authorised distributor. Where a project needs genuine post-crack load capacity — slabs-on-grade replacing mesh, or toughness-rated industrial floors — a structural macro-fibre rather than PPF is the correct selection, and Space Arc can advise on the right Fosroc or alternative solution for that duty.
