Fosroc Primer 20
Single-component, chemically active joint-face primer that locks Fosroc polyurethane sealants to concrete in roads, runways and hardstandings.
What is it?
A single-component, solvent-based (xylene-borne) isocyanate primer that prepares porous concrete joint faces to receive Fosroc’s two-component polyurethane pavement sealants such as Colpor 200PF.
Where is it used?
Sawn or formed joint faces in concrete roads, runways, aprons, hardstandings and similar pavements across India, applied just before the polyurethane sealant.
Why use it?
It is the adhesion bridge between concrete and the sealant. Skipping it risks bond failure, sealant peel and water/fuel ingress into the joint — Primer 20 makes the difference between a 10-year seal and an early callback.
How is it applied?
Brush a single thin coat onto clean, dry, frost-free joint faces. Once tack-free, pour the polyurethane sealant within the 30-minute to roughly 2-hour open window; re-prime if the sealant is delayed.
About Fosroc Primer 20
Fosroc Primer 20 is the dedicated joint-face primer in Fosroc’s pavement-sealing system. It is a single-pack, chemically active liquid built on an aromatic polyisocyanate prepolymer carried in a xylene/ethylbenzene solvent blend, designed to be brushed onto porous concrete just before a polyurethane joint sealant is applied. On Indian road, runway and hardstanding projects, the sealant itself — most commonly Fosroc Colpor 200PF — does the visible work of accommodating joint movement and resisting fuel spillage, but that sealant can only perform if it is chemically keyed to the concrete. That keying is exactly what Primer 20 delivers.\n\nThe product works by penetrating the open capillaries and micro-pores of a freshly sawn or formed joint face, then reacting to form a thin, tenacious film that the incoming polyurethane sealant can chemically grip. Because it is a reactive isocyanate primer rather than a simple solvent wash, the bond it creates is far stronger than mechanical adhesion alone — which is why Fosroc specifies it for the demanding, trafficked, fuel-and-oil-exposed environments where Colpor 200PF is used. For Space Arc Engineering customers across Delhi NCR and pan-India, Primer 20 is a small line item with an outsized effect on whether an expensive joint-sealing contract survives its warranty period.\n\nPrimer 20 is supplied ready to use in compact 500 ml cans (a 5 L pack is sold in some markets), reflecting that priming consumes far less material than sealing — Fosroc rates roughly 1 litre of Primer 20 per 20 litres of Colpor 200PF. It is a flammable, isocyanate-bearing product and must be treated as a controlled site material, not a general-purpose paint. Used correctly, it is one of the most cost-effective insurance steps in modern pavement jointing.
The technical insight
The defining feature of Primer 20 is that it is chemically matched to two-component polyurethane sealants. The safety data sheet confirms the binder is an aromatic polyisocyanate prepolymer with free MDI (diphenylmethane-4,4′-di-isocyanate, oligomeric MDI) dissolved in xylene (30-60%) and ethylbenzene. Those isocyanate groups are the same reactive chemistry found in the polyurethane sealant, so the primer film does not just sit on the concrete — it co-reacts at the interface, producing a continuous chemical bond from substrate to sealant. This is why a general acrylic or epoxy primer cannot be substituted for it under a PU pavement sealant.\n\nThe practical consequence is the strict open-time window. Primer 20 must be tack-free before the sealant goes in (typically 20-60 minutes / up to about 2 hours depending on temperature and humidity), and the sealant should follow within roughly 2 hours; beyond that the reactive sites are consumed or contaminated and the face must be re-primed. The flammable xylene carrier (flash point about 34 degC) also means it flashes off quickly in Indian summer heat, shortening the window further — a detail crews must plan joint lengths around so primed faces are never left waiting.
Where it is used
- Priming sawn or formed joint faces in concrete highways and service roads before pouring polyurethane sealant
- Priming runway, taxiway and aircraft apron joints prior to Colpor 200PF in fuel-spillage zones
- Hardstanding, parking bay and cargo-bay joints at ports, logistics hubs and industrial yards
- Expansion and contraction joints in concrete pavements requiring a high-movement PU seal
- Oil terminals, garage forecourts and fuel-handling slabs where chemical-resistant sealing is specified
- Maintenance and resealing of existing concrete pavement joints where a durable PU sealant bond is required
Key advantages
- Single-component and ready to use — no on-site mixing of two parts, reducing batching errors
- Chemically active isocyanate base that bonds reactively to polyurethane sealants for far stronger adhesion than a plain wash primer
- Low-viscosity liquid that penetrates capillaries and pores of the concrete joint face
- Cold-applied by brush with no heating or special plant required
- Improves and assures sealant adhesion in trafficked, fuel- and oil-exposed pavements
- Economical usage rate — about 1 litre primes enough joint face for 20 litres of Colpor 200PF
- Compact 500 ml packaging suited to the small primer volumes that joint sealing actually needs
- 12-month shelf life when stored cool and dry, easing project procurement and stockholding
Limitations & considerations
- Flammable solvent-based product (flash point about 34 degC) — must be kept away from ignition sources and not applied near hot works
- Contains isocyanates (MDI) and xylene; classified as harmful/sensitising and a suspected carcinogen, so gloves, eye protection and ventilation are mandatory
- Cannot be applied to damp, wet or frost-affected substrates — the joint face must be clean and dry
- Short open window: sealant must follow within roughly 2 hours and the face re-primed if delayed
- Application is restricted below about 5 degC; cold-weather jointing needs scheduling care
- Strong, offensive solvent odour — poor choice for enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces without extraction
- Not a stand-alone product — it has no value unless followed by the compatible polyurethane sealant
- Unused primer should not be returned to the supply tin at day’s end, so over-decanting wastes material
Selection & best practice
Saw or form the joint, then mechanically clean the faces — wire brush, grinding or grit blast to remove all dust, laitance, curing-compound residue, rust and old coatings — and ensure the face is bone dry and frost-free before priming. Decant only what the crew can use within the open window. Stir the primer to a uniform dispersion, then brush a single thin, continuous coat onto both joint faces with a clean dry brush, avoiding puddling at the base. Allow it to become tack-free (usually 20-60 minutes; longer in cool or humid conditions), then pour the polyurethane sealant within about 2 hours; if that window is missed, re-prime the face. Work in well-ventilated conditions, keep all ignition sources away, wear nitrile gloves and eye protection, and clean tools with a suitable solvent immediately after use. Plan joint-pour lengths so no primed face is left exposed beyond its open time, and store unopened cans cool and dry, using within the 12-month shelf life.

How we position Fosroc Primer 20
Primer 20 is best understood as one specific link in a Fosroc system rather than a stand-alone product: it exists to bond Fosroc’s polyurethane pavement sealants — principally Colpor 200PF — to concrete, and on most projects Space Arc Engineering supplies the two together. Where the joint sealant differs, the primer differs too: Fosroc’s hot-applied and polysulphide systems (e.g. Thioflex 600) and its construction-joint waterstop/sealant ranges use their own recommended primers, so always match the primer to the specified sealant rather than assuming Primer 20 fits every joint. For cementitious-repair priming or as a bonding aid, that is a different job handled by products such as Renderoc Primer or Nitobond, not Primer 20. Against competitor systems, the closest equivalents are Sika’s joint-sealant primers (e.g. Sika Primer-3 N class), Pidilite Dr. Fixit / MYK / STP joint-sealing primers, and MBS/MasterSeal primers from the BASF-lineage range — all serve the same purpose of keying a movement sealant to concrete. Honest guidance to Indian specifiers: pick the sealant first for the movement, traffic and chemical exposure you face, then use the primer that manufacturer warrants with it. If your specification calls for Colpor 200PF, Primer 20 is the correct and non-negotiable partner; if you are using a Sika or STP sealant, use that brand’s matched primer instead. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor, can supply Primer 20 with Colpor 200PF and advise on the right primer-sealant pairing for your project.
