PVC Waterstop for Construction and Expansion Joints in Concrete Structures

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Supercast PVC Waterstop is a flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) water barrier system from Fosroc for preventing the migration of water through concrete construction joints, movement joints, and expansion joints in water-retaining and below-grade structures. In reinforced concrete construction, joints between consecutive pours of concrete are inherent points of weakness for water tightness — the fresh concrete does not bond monolithically to the existing pour, and even with excellent formwork and vibration, a plane of relative weakness exists at the joint face. A waterstop is embedded in the concrete at the joint so that it crosses the potential leak path, providing a physical barrier through which water cannot permeate. Supercast PVC Waterstops are manufactured in a range of profiles (flat, ribbed, and centre-bulb for movement joints) and widths to suit different joint widths and water head conditions. The ribs on the flat profile waterstops anchor the product into the concrete on each side of the joint and increase the water path length around the perimeter. For joints that are expected to undergo movement (expansion joints, settlement joints), the centre-bulb profile provides a reserve of material that accommodates movement without stretching the waterstop beyond its capacity. Supercast PVC Waterstops are used in basement walls and slabs, water treatment plants, sewage treatment works, swimming pools, tunnels, bridges, dams, and any concrete structure where water tightness at joints is a design requirement. Space Arc Engineering distributes Supercast PVC Waterstops and related installation accessories for water infrastructure and below-grade construction projects across Delhi NCR and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Supercast PVC Waterstop and the Supercast SW hydrophilic strip?

A PVC waterstop (Supercast PVC) is a wide flat or ribbed strip of flexible PVC that is embedded into the concrete during casting, straddling the joint. It works by providing a physical barrier and a long percolation path around its perimeter. The Supercast SW hydrophilic waterstop strip is a narrow profile of hydrophilic polymer that is fixed to the face of the first pour before casting the second pour — it swells on contact with water to fill the gap at the joint. For most construction joints in water-retaining structures, a combination of both systems (PVC waterstop embedded in the concrete plus Supercast SW on the joint face) provides the highest reliability. The two systems are complementary and are often used together.

How is the PVC waterstop held in position during concrete casting?

The PVC waterstop must be held accurately in position so that it is centred on the joint plane, with half of its width on each side of the joint. For vertical joints in walls, the waterstop is wired to the reinforcement cage. For horizontal joints in slabs, the waterstop may be supported on chairs or tied to transverse reinforcing bars crossing the joint. Care must be taken during concrete placing and vibration to avoid displacing the waterstop from its intended position. A common defect in waterstop installation is the waterstop being pushed to one side during vibration, leaving less embedment on one side and reducing its effectiveness.

Can PVC waterstops be joined in the field to make longer runs?

Yes. PVC waterstops can be joined on site by heat welding using a purpose-made welding tool (waterstop welding iron or flat plate welder). The joint must be made carefully to produce a continuous weld that restores the full cross-section of the waterstop — any pinhole, gap, or weakness in the weld becomes a potential water leak path at the joint. Factory-welded T-junctions and L-junctions (corner pieces) are available for internal and external corners and T-junction intersections. Site welding of these complex junction pieces is difficult and factory-welded prefabricated junction pieces should be used wherever possible.
