What is it?

A factory-engineered composite waterstop that combines a high-grade extruded PVC waterstop profile with two post-inserted hydrophilic elements (Supercast SW TS), giving two independent sealing mechanisms in a single 250mm expansion-joint product.

Where is it used?

Movement (expansion) joints in deep basements, tunnels, reservoirs, water and sewage treatment tanks and other water-retaining or water-excluding concrete where high water tables and the highest watertightness rating are required.

Why use it?

It removes the classic weakness of co-extruded hydrophilic waterstops: the inserts carry a retarded (delay) swell coating to prevent premature swelling on site, and a damaged insert can simply be pulled out and a replacement tooled in without scrapping the run.

How is it applied?

The PVC profile is fixed and cast into the concrete in the conventional way (nailing flanges or brass eyelets), positioned with the hydrophilic inserts on the water face; lengths are hot-air/butt welded and joined to factory-made intersections.

About Fosroc Supercast Twinstop

Fosroc Supercast Twinstop is a composite PVC-and-hydrophilic waterstop system engineered for dual watertight security at movement joints in water-retaining and water-excluding concrete structures. Rather than being a gun-applied or pour-grade joint sealant, it is a cast-in joint-treatment component: a continuous, four-bulbed extruded PVC waterstop into which two hydrophilic elements (branded Supercast SW TS) are factory-inserted. The result is a single product that delivers two distinct lines of defence against water ingress through a joint. The PVC body performs exactly as a conventional Supercast waterstop, creating a long, tortuous water path that physically bars the passage of water; should water ever reach the hydrophilic inserts, those elements swell and exert a positive sealing pressure against the joint faces, closing off any residual path. For Indian basements, metros, STPs and reservoirs sitting in aggressive ground and high water tables, that redundancy is the whole point of specifying Twinstop over a plain PVC waterstop. The system is available in 250mm width in two configurations to suit how the joint is detailed: Supercast Hydrofoil TS, a centrally placed profile cast into the body of the slab or wall, and Supercast Rearguard TS, an externally (rear-face) placed profile fixed against the shutter or blinding. Because the hydrophilic strips are post-inserted and carry a retarded swell coating, they avoid the most common and costly failure of one-piece co-extruded hydrophilic waterstops on Indian sites: premature or pre-swelling caused by rain, ponding or humidity before the concrete pour. If an insert is wetted, knocked or damaged during construction, it is simply removed and a fresh strip is tooled into the carrier, with no need to cut out and re-weld the whole length. Twinstop is a Water Regulations Advisory Service (WRc) approved product, suitable for use in contact with potable water, and the PVC compound meets the US Corps of Engineers specification CRD-C 572-74. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Supercast Twinstop and the wider Fosroc Supercast waterstop range as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with site support on joint detailing, welding and intersection fabrication.

The technical insight

The engineering value of Twinstop lies in decoupling the two seal mechanisms and in the retarded-swell chemistry. A conventional co-extruded hydrophilic waterstop bonds the swelling polymer to the carrier during manufacture, so any moisture exposure before casting begins to consume the swell capacity and can also delaminate the strip. Twinstop instead post-inserts the hydrophilic elements into a slot in a normal four-bulbed PVC profile, and each element is treated with a delay-swell coating so it tolerates realistic site exposure (incidental rain, humidity) and only activates meaningfully once cast and in sustained contact with water. The PVC compound itself is a robust, plasticised, high-grade extrusion: tensile strength in excess of 14 MN/m2 (greater than 15 N/mm2 per the Supercast range data) tested to BS 2782 at 25 degrees C, elongation at break above 300%, and a hardness of roughly 80 to 90 Shore A, conforming to US Corps of Engineers CRD-C 572-74. Within the Supercast PVC family the profiles are rated to a hydrostatic head of up to 250m (around 25 bar), with movement capability dependent on profile geometry (centrally placed expansion profiles such as Hydrofoil accommodate around 10mm, while heavier rear-guard/XHD expansion profiles range up to roughly 40 to 60mm). The patented reinforced eyelet/nailing flanges give positive fixing without creating water paths around the profile, and the system is fully continuous and integrable with standard Supercast PVC via hot-air welding. Critically, the two mechanisms are complementary rather than dependent: the PVC carries the primary seal and the structural movement, while the hydrophilic insert provides a self-healing secondary seal that closes minor imperfections, honeycombing at the interface or fine shrinkage paths that a rigid PVC alone could not. The trade-off is that this is a cast-in component requiring correct positioning and full concrete compaction around the profile, not a remedial product that can be retrofitted to a hardened joint.

Where it is used

  • Movement (expansion) joints in deep basement rafts and retaining walls under high water table
  • Water-retaining structures: clear-water reservoirs, service reservoirs, overhead and underground tanks
  • Sewage treatment plant (STP/ETP) tanks, channels and aeration basins where effluent and sludge are present
  • Tunnels, cut-and-cover sections, metro box structures and underground car parks
  • Swimming pools, water features and fountains
  • Below-ground structures exposed to salt water, agricultural silage, oil, diesel or petrol contamination
  • Potable-water tanks and reservoirs requiring WRc-approved materials in contact with drinking water
  • Joints requiring the highest watertightness rating where a single PVC waterstop is considered insufficient

Key advantages

  • Dual sealing security: a primary PVC water-path barrier plus a secondary swelling hydrophilic seal in one product
  • Delay-swell coated hydrophilic inserts prevent the common problem of pre-swell from site rain or ponding before the pour
  • Damage-tolerant: a wetted or damaged hydrophilic insert can be pulled out and a replacement tooled in without re-welding the run
  • WRc approved for use in contact with potable water
  • Fully continuous four-bulbed PVC network with patented reinforced eyelet/nailing flanges for positive fixing and no water paths around the profile
  • Resists aggressive media including salt water, sewage, agricultural silage, oil, diesel and petrol
  • Complete compatibility and weldability with the standard Supercast PVC waterstop range and factory-made intersections
  • Cost-effective alternative to one-piece co-extruded hydrophilic waterstops
  • Available as straight rolls, factory intersections or prefabricated network segments to minimise site jointing

Limitations & considerations

  • Primarily a 250mm expansion-joint product; for construction joints alone a swellable Supercast SW strip or plain PVC waterstop is usually the more economical choice
  • Must be cast into the concrete in the correct position with full compaction around the profile; it cannot be retrofitted into a hardened joint
  • Concrete must never be poured onto a pre-activated (already swollen) hydrophilic strip, so inserts must be protected from rain and ponding before the pour
  • Hot-weld site jointing of PVC liberates hydrogen chloride mist and vapour, and welding after insert placement can evolve rubber fume, so adequate or forced ventilation is required
  • Quality of the seal depends heavily on welding workmanship and on avoiding voids/honeycombing at the concrete interface
  • Movement accommodation is governed by the PVC profile geometry (centrally placed Hydrofoil is a modest-movement profile), so high-movement or settlement joints may need a heavier expansion or XHD profile
  • Inserts and PVC must be stored in cool, dry, original packaging away from sunlight to preserve the delay-swell coating

Selection & best practice

Specify Twinstop where dual watertight security is genuinely warranted: deep basements, water-retaining tanks and below-ground structures under high water tables. Choose the profile by joint detail, Supercast Hydrofoil TS for centrally placed (cast-in) movement joints and Supercast Rearguard TS for externally/rear-face placed joints, and always orient the hydrophilic inserts toward the water face. Fix securely so the waterstop cannot move during the pour: nail through the outer nailing flanges of the Rearguard profile (leaving heads proud to anchor in cured concrete), and use the brass eyelets located outside the edge bulbs for the Hydrofoil profile so no water path is created around it. Compact concrete fully around all bulbs to eliminate voids. Keep inserts dry: protect them from rain and ponding, and never pour concrete onto a pre-activated hydrophilic strip; if an insert is wetted or damaged, remove it and tool in a replacement. Minimise site jointing by ordering factory-made intersections (mitres, tees, three- and four-way pieces) and butt-welding them to straight rolls so only simple straight welds are made on site; ensure adequate ventilation during all hot-air welding. Complete the joint detail with the companion Fosroc products shown in the system: a backer/filler such as Hydrocell XL closed-cell filler board to form the joint gap, and a suitable gun-grade joint sealant such as Thioflex 600 (or Nitoseal) at the exposed face, applied with correct width-to-depth ratio over the backer rod and the appropriate primer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Supercast Twinstop a sealant?
No. It is a cast-in composite waterstop, not a gun-grade or pour-grade joint sealant. It combines a PVC waterstop profile with post-inserted hydrophilic elements and is built into the concrete joint. At the exposed face it is normally finished with a separate sealant such as Thioflex 600 over a Hydrocell XL filler board, so it works alongside sealants rather than replacing them.
What is the difference between the Hydrofoil TS and Rearguard TS versions?
Both are 250mm wide. Supercast Hydrofoil TS is a centrally placed profile cast into the body of the slab or wall and secured with brass eyelets located outside the edge bulbs. Supercast Rearguard TS is an externally (rear-face) placed profile fixed against the shutter or blinding using its outer nailing flanges. The choice depends on how the movement joint is detailed.
Why use Twinstop instead of a plain PVC waterstop or a co-extruded hydrophilic waterstop?
It gives two independent seals in one product: the PVC barrier plus a swelling hydrophilic seal that closes minor imperfections. Unlike one-piece co-extruded hydrophilic waterstops, the inserts carry a delay-swell coating to prevent pre-swelling from site rain, and a damaged insert can be removed and replaced without re-welding the whole run.
Can Supercast Twinstop be used with potable water?
Yes. Supercast Twinstop is approved by the Water Regulations Advisory Service (WRc) for use in contact with potable water, which makes it suitable for drinking-water reservoirs and tanks in addition to sewage, salt-water and chemically contaminated environments.
How is it jointed and intersected on site?
Straight lengths are hot-air / butt welded together. For corners and junctions, Fosroc recommends ordering factory-made intersections (mitres, tees, three-way and four-way pieces) and butt-welding them to the standard rolls, so only simple straight welds are made on site. Adequate ventilation is essential because welding PVC releases hydrogen chloride vapour.
What happens if the hydrophilic insert gets wet before the concrete is poured?
The delay-swell coating tolerates incidental rain and humidity, but inserts should still be protected from heavy rain and ponding, and concrete must never be poured onto an already-swollen strip. If an insert does swell or get damaged, it is simply pulled out and a fresh replacement is tooled into the carrier, which is a key advantage over fixed co-extruded systems.

How we position Fosroc Supercast Twinstop

Supercast Twinstop sits at the top of Fosroc’s Supercast waterstop range as the dual-security option for movement joints, above plain Supercast PVC waterstops (Hydrofoil, Rearguard, Watafoil) and the standalone Supercast SW swellable strips used for construction joints. It is a joint-treatment / waterstop component rather than a sealant, so on a real project it is normally specified together with face sealants and fillers from the wider Fosroc joint-sealing portfolio: Thioflex 600 (polysulphide) for submerged and trafficked joints, Nitoseal MS600 / Nitoseal SC for facade and general movement joints, Colpor 200PF for trafficked pavement joints, and Hydrocell XL as the compressible filler/backer. Credible competing systems an Indian specifier may evaluate include Sika’s waterbar and SikaSwell hydrophilic profiles paired with Sikaflex sealants, BASF/MBS MasterSeal waterproofing and joint products, and STP (Shalimar) waterstops and swellable seals. Within that landscape, Twinstop’s distinct positioning is the combination of a proven PVC barrier with a field-replaceable, delay-swell hydrophilic insert and WRc potable-water approval, which is why it is reserved for the deepest, most watertight-critical movement joints rather than routine construction joints.
