Thioflex 600 PG is a two-component, pourable grade, liquid polysulphide joint sealant for horizontal joints — floor construction joints, expansion joints, canal joints, and water retaining structure joints where the joint is oriented horizontally and the sealant can be poured in without sagging. Polysulphide sealants cure to form a flexible, rubbery sealant with excellent resistance to water, fuels, oils, and a wide range of chemicals — far superior in chemical resistance to standard polyurethane sealants for industrial floor joint applications. Thioflex 600 PG has a long track record in Indian waterproofing and civil engineering applications, particularly for water retaining structure joints (dams, reservoirs, canals, sewage treatment plants) where the joint sealant must maintain watertightness under sustained water pressure and chemical exposure for decades. The pourable grade (PG) is designed for joints that are horizontal and can be poured — a separate gun-grade (GG) version is available for vertical and inclined joints. What is the difference between Thioflex 600 PG and Thioflex 600 GG?
Thioflex 600 PG is the pourable grade, formulated with low viscosity after mixing so it can be poured into horizontal joints and self-levels to fill the joint cross-section. It is not suitable for vertical or inclined joints where it would flow out before curing. Thioflex 600 GG is the gun-grade formulation — higher viscosity so it can be applied by caulking gun into vertical and inclined joints and stays in place without sagging.
Does the joint need a backing rod before sealing with Thioflex 600 PG?
Yes. A closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rod should be installed in the joint before sealant application. The backing rod controls the depth of sealant (the depth-to-width ratio should be approximately 1:2 for optimal movement performance), prevents three-sided adhesion (which would restrict movement and cause tearing), and provides a bond break at the base of the joint. Primer should be applied to the concrete joint faces before sealant application for maximum adhesion.
How long does Thioflex 600 PG remain flexible in service?
Polysulphide sealants like Thioflex 600 PG have excellent long-term elasticity and are known to remain flexible for 20 years or more in properly designed and installed joints. The service life depends on joint design (width, movement), UV and thermal exposure, and chemical environment. In water retaining structures where the joint is not directly UV-exposed, service life can exceed 25 years with correct specification and installation.
