Fosroc Thioflex 600
Two-Component Polysulfide Sealant for Movement Joints in Concrete and Masonry
Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad
Product Overview
Fosroc Thioflex 600 is a two-component, cold-applied polysulfide joint sealant from Fosroc for sealing movement joints, construction joints, isolation joints, and cracks in concrete structures, masonry buildings, curtain wall facades, and civil infrastructure. Polysulfide sealants have been the dominant choice for concrete joint sealing in India and internationally for several decades because of their combination of: excellent flexibility and elongation (capable of accommodating 25 per cent total joint movement); very long service life (20 to 30 years in protected joint conditions); excellent adhesion to concrete, stone, aluminium, glass, and most building materials; high resistance to weathering — UV radiation, rain, and temperature cycling do not significantly degrade polysulfide sealant over its service life (unlike silicone sealants which maintain flexibility but can lose adhesion, and polyurethane sealants which are UV-sensitive and degrade in exposed facade joints); chemical resistance — polysulfide sealants are resistant to fuels, oils, dilute acids and alkalis, and jet fuel (Thioflex 600 Jet Fuel Grade is specified in airport aprons and fuel storage areas for this reason); and compatibility with water-retaining and water-treatment structures where the sealant is permanently in contact with water (potable water contact grades available). The two-component formulation (base compound and curing agent) is mixed in the supplied ratio by a mechanical paddle mixer, applied by sealant gun to the prepared joint, and tooled to a concave profile to maximise the bonded contact area on the joint faces. A bond breaker (backing rod of closed-cell polyethylene foam) is installed in the joint before sealant application to control the sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion that would cause tearing of the sealant under movement. Space Arc Engineering distributes Fosroc Thioflex 600 for joint sealing projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the key differences between polysulfide sealants like Thioflex 600 and single-component polyurethane sealants like Fosroc Nitoseal and when should each be specified?
Polysulfide sealants (Thioflex 600) and polyurethane sealants (Fosroc Nitoseal PU or similar) are both flexible, adhesive joint sealants for movement joints in concrete and masonry, but they differ significantly in their performance characteristics and preferred application areas. Cure mechanism: Thioflex 600 is a two-component polysulfide that cures by chemical reaction of the base and curing agent — this guarantees cure regardless of the humidity and temperature conditions after application (in a closed joint, where air access is limited, a single-component moisture-cure sealant may cure slowly or incompletely; a two-component polysulfide cures from the chemical reaction within the material regardless of air exposure). Single-component polyurethane sealants cure by reaction with atmospheric moisture — they are simple to apply from a single cartridge gun but can cure slowly in dry conditions and unevenly in deep joints where the inner sealant is shielded from moisture. Weathering and UV resistance: polysulfide sealants (Thioflex 600) have inherently excellent UV and weathering resistance — they are stable in exposed facade joints and external expansion joints for 20 to 30 years. Polyurethane sealants, while flexible and adhesive, are UV-sensitive (they chalk and degrade in direct UV exposure) and typically require UV-stable paintable topcoat in exterior joints for adequate service life. Chemical resistance: Thioflex 600 polysulfide resists fuels, oils, and many chemicals; polyurethane sealants have more limited chemical resistance. In summary, Thioflex 600 is preferred for: water-retaining structures and reservoir joints; fuel-resistant applications (aprons, fuel storage); facades with long-term UV exposure requirements; and critical structural joints where cure reliability is essential. Single-component polyurethane sealants (Nitoseal) are preferred for: light-duty maintenance applications; smaller-scale building caulking where the simplicity of a single-component gun-applied product is valued; and internal joints where UV exposure is not a concern.
How is Fosroc Thioflex 600 prepared and applied on site and what is the key procedure to prevent three-sided adhesion failure?
The site application procedure for Fosroc Thioflex 600 requires careful attention at each stage to ensure that the sealant bonds correctly to the joint faces, accommodates the specified joint movement, and has the correct depth-to-width geometry for flexibility. The procedure is as follows. Joint preparation: the joint must be clean, dry, and free of all dust, oil, loose material, and existing old sealant (wire brush, saw cut to clean vertical faces, and vacuum or air-blast to remove all debris); the joint width should be within the specified range for Thioflex 600 (typically 10 to 50 mm); any defective concrete at the joint edges must be made good before sealant installation. Backing rod installation: a closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rod of diameter approximately 25 per cent larger than the joint width is forced into the joint with a blunt instrument to a depth that provides the required sealant depth — typically the sealant depth should be half the joint width (for a 20 mm wide joint, sealant should be 10 mm deep). The backing rod serves two functions: it controls the sealant depth so the sealant has the correct shape factor (width to depth ratio of approximately 2:1); and critically, it prevents sealant adhesion to the bottom of the joint (three-sided adhesion), which would cause the sealant to tear longitudinally when the joint opens in extension because the sealant would be pulled from three adhesive faces simultaneously rather than the correct two-faced stretching that the 2:1 shape factor allows. If backing rod cannot be inserted (very narrow joints), bond breaker tape is applied to the joint bottom instead. Mixing: Thioflex 600 base and curing agent are mixed in the supplied ratio (emptying the entire curing agent into the base component) with a clean paddle mixer for 3 to 5 minutes until a homogeneous colour without streaks is achieved. Application: the mixed sealant is loaded into a sealant gun and gunned into the joint, filling completely from the bottom of the backing rod to the concrete surface, then tooled to a concave profile.
Can Fosroc Thioflex 600 be used in potable water tanks and reservoirs in contact with drinking water and what grade should be specified?
Yes — Fosroc Thioflex 600 is available in a potable water contact grade specifically formulated and tested for use in contact with water intended for human consumption, and this is one of the important application areas for Thioflex 600 in India where the construction and maintenance of water treatment and storage infrastructure is a major sector. Ordinary polysulfide sealants (standard grade) may contain components (cure accelerators, plasticisers, or other additives) that could leach from the sealant into the water and affect taste, odour, or safety of the stored water — the standard grade is therefore not suitable for potable water contact. The Potable Water Grade Thioflex 600 is formulated using only components that comply with drinking water contact material requirements, and it is tested (typically against British Standard BS 6920 for Water Regulations Advisory Scheme approval, which is the standard used in India for potable water contact materials as referenced by many Indian water utilities and consulting engineers) to confirm that the sealant components do not leach into water at levels that would affect the safety, taste, or quality of the stored water. For a water treatment plant, service reservoir, or overhead water storage tank in India, the specification for joint sealing material should specifically state the requirement for potable water contact compliance (WRC-approved or BS 6920-compliant) and the procurement order for Thioflex 600 should confirm that the Potable Water Grade is supplied — not the standard grade. The application procedure for Potable Water Grade Thioflex 600 in a water tank is identical to the standard grade procedure; the difference is in the formulation of the product only. After application of Thioflex 600 in a new or repaired potable water tank, the tank should be washed out thoroughly and the first fill discharged before the tank is brought into potable water supply service.
