What is it?

A two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin primer that seals cementitious substrates and creates a high-strength chemical and mechanical bond beneath Fosroc Trafficguard flooring and traffic-deck systems.

Where is it used?

Car park decks, ramps, warehouse and industrial floors, and any heavily trafficked area where a Trafficguard polyurethane or epoxy coating system is being installed over concrete, epoxy mortars or screeds.

Why use it?

Without a sound primer, even premium deck coatings delabor and blister. Trafficguard Primer penetrates the concrete, locks down dust, resists oil and chemical ingress, and guarantees the membrane stays anchored under traffic.

How is it applied?

Mixed 2:1 by volume, then brush- or roller-applied to clean, prepared concrete in one coat (two on porous slabs). While wet it is seeded with Fosroc Anti Slip Grain No. 3 at 0.4 kg/m² to key the membrane, then cured before overcoating.

About Fosroc Trafficguard Primer

Fosroc Trafficguard Primer is the foundation layer of the Fosroc Trafficguard family of traffic-deck and floor-protection systems. It is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin sealer formulated to do one job exceptionally well: prepare a concrete or cementitious substrate so that the Trafficguard membrane and wear course bond permanently and perform for years under vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

In an Indian construction context, the substrate is rarely perfect. Power-floated car-park slabs carry surface laitance, warehouse floors are dusted with fine cement and silica, and existing decks are contaminated with oil, tyre marks and curing-compound residue. Any of these will compromise the adhesion of a high-build coating. Trafficguard Primer addresses this by penetrating into the open capillary structure of the concrete, binding loose surface particles, sealing the substrate against the upward migration of moisture vapour and chemicals, and presenting a chemically active epoxy surface to which the subsequent polyurethane or epoxy layers can chemically and mechanically key.

Because it is solvent-free, the product is low-odour and can be applied in enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces such as basement car parks and internal warehouse bays, where solvented primers are impractical or unsafe. It is supplied as a pre-weighed two-pack kit with a simple 2:1 by-volume mix ratio, which removes the guesswork that causes under- or over-catalysed batches on site. Once cured, the primer film is itself chemically resistant, dust-proofing the slab and resisting attack from a wide range of oils, acids and alkalis even before the topcoats go down.

It is important to understand what this product is and is not. Trafficguard Primer is a system component, not a stand-alone decorative or wearing finish. It is specified beneath Fosroc Trafficguard UR, UR100, UR150, UR200 and related deck systems and is not intended to be left exposed as a finished floor. Specifying it correctly, with the right anti-slip grain seeding and cure times, is what determines whether the entire deck system delivers its design life. Space Arc Engineering supplies the genuine Fosroc material along with the matching membrane, wear course and anti-slip grains as a complete, warranty-compliant package across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

Trafficguard Primer is a two-component, 100% solids (solvent-free) epoxy with a 2:1 by-volume base-to-hardener ratio. Its low viscosity is deliberate, allowing maximum penetration into open concrete capillaries so the cured film is anchored within the substrate rather than sitting as a skin on top. Cure is temperature-dependent: at 25°C it reaches initial hardness in 24 hours, is tack-free in 4-6 hours and fully cures in 7 days, while at 35°C those figures accelerate to 16 hours, 2-3 hours and 5 days respectively. Open (working) time is about 60 minutes at 25°C, shrinking to 40 minutes at 35°C, so in Indian summer conditions applicators must mix smaller batches and work faster. Within the Trafficguard UR build-up the primer is applied at a 200-micron wet film thickness and seeded while wet with Fosroc Anti Slip Grain No. 3 at 0.4 kg/m² to create a mechanical key for the 750-micron membrane that follows. The grain seeding is the critical, often-skipped step: it converts a smooth primer skin into a textured bonding bridge, which is essential when high-build polyurethane membranes or epoxy screeds are laid over it.

Where it is used

  • Priming concrete car-park decks and ramps prior to Trafficguard UR polyurethane membrane application
  • Sealing and dust-proofing warehouse and industrial floor slabs before a Trafficguard deck system
  • Priming epoxy mortars and screeds prior to overlaying a Trafficguard wearing course
  • Preparing enclosed basement parking and internal bays where solvent-free, low-odour priming is mandatory
  • Binding surface laitance and consolidating friable concrete surfaces ahead of high-build coatings
  • Providing a chemical-resistant interim seal on prepared substrates against oil and chemical penetration

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free and low odour, so it can be safely applied in confined and poorly ventilated spaces such as basement car parks
  • High bond strength with a superior chemical and physical bond to virtually all substrates, including damp surfaces
  • Chemically resistant once cured, withstanding a wide range of oils, acids and alkalis
  • Low viscosity gives deep penetration into concrete capillaries for a substrate-anchored film
  • Simple 2:1 by-volume mix ratio reduces on-site mixing errors
  • Dust-proofs and seals cementitious substrates, improving the integrity of the whole deck system
  • Non-flammable, simplifying storage and on-site handling
  • Water-washable tools and equipment before cure, easing clean-up

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a stand-alone or wearing finish; it must be overcoated with a Trafficguard membrane and wear course
  • Performance depends entirely on substrate preparation; laitance, oil, grease and curing compounds must be removed first
  • Short open time, especially in hot Indian conditions (about 40 minutes at 35°C), demands disciplined, small-batch mixing
  • Requires anti-slip grain seeding (No. 2 or No. 3) while wet to develop a proper mechanical key for subsequent layers
  • Substrate temperature must be controlled between 5°C and 40°C during application
  • New concrete should be cured a minimum of 28 days and meet moisture limits before priming
  • A second coat is needed on porous concrete, increasing consumption and programme time

Selection & best practice

Always begin with a pull-off adhesion assessment on a representative area after surface preparation. Mechanically prepare the slab by grit blasting or scarifying to remove laitance and open the capillary structure, then remove all dust, oil and grease (steam clean or degrease oily areas). Confirm the substrate is sound, with surface defects and blowholes deeper than 1 mm repaired using a Fosroc Nitomortar repair mortar. Mix only the quantity that can be applied within the open time, especially in summer, using a slow-speed drill and paddle for 2-3 minutes until homogeneous. Apply by brush or lambswool roller, ensuring full coverage with no ponding, and add a second coat on porous slabs. Crucially, while the primer is still wet, broadcast Fosroc Anti Slip Grain No. 3 at 0.4 kg/m² to create the mechanical key, then allow the specified 24-hour cure before applying the membrane. Never thin with solvent.

Industry use cases

Commercial Car Parks

Multi-storey and basement car-park decks in malls, offices and apartment complexes are primed with Trafficguard Primer before the Trafficguard UR waterproof membrane, sealing the slab and preventing membrane debonding under constant vehicle movement.

Warehousing & Logistics

High-throughput warehouse and distribution-centre floors are dust-proofed and sealed by the primer, providing the anchored base for a hard-wearing, skid-resistant Trafficguard deck that survives forklift and pallet traffic.

Industrial Manufacturing

Manufacturing-unit floors exposed to oils and chemicals use the primer’s chemical resistance and penetration to consolidate the substrate ahead of a chemically resistant Trafficguard wearing course.

Infrastructure & Ramps

Vehicle ramps, loading bays and access decks are primed and grain-seeded to develop the mechanical key needed for high-build polyurethane membranes that must flex and grip under heavy, repetitive loading.

Enclosed & Basement Areas

Because it is solvent-free and low odour, the primer is specified for enclosed basement parking and internal bays where solvented primers cannot be used safely.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Trafficguard Primer a finished floor coating?
No. It is a sealing and bonding primer that forms the first layer of a Trafficguard deck system. It must be overcoated with a Trafficguard membrane and wear course; it is not designed to be left exposed as a wearing or decorative finish.
What is the coverage and pack size?
Coverage is 4-5 m²/litre (quoted as 5.0 m²/litre within the Trafficguard UR system, depending on substrate porosity and texture), and it is supplied in 9 litre packs. Porous concrete may require a second coat, which increases consumption.
Why does the primer need anti-slip grain scattered into it?
Seeding Fosroc Anti Slip Grain No. 2 or No. 3 (typically No. 3 at 0.4 kg/m²) into the wet primer creates a mechanical key. This is essential for the reliable adhesion of high-build membranes and epoxy screeds applied over the primer, and skipping it is a common cause of system failure.
Can it be applied in enclosed basement car parks?
Yes. Because it is solvent-free and low odour, Trafficguard Primer is particularly suited to enclosed and poorly ventilated areas where solvented primers would be unsafe or impractical. It is also non-flammable.
How long before I can apply the next coat or membrane?
Within the Trafficguard UR system the primed and grain-seeded surface is allowed to cure for 24 hours before the membrane is applied. Initial hardness is reached in 24 hours at 25°C (16 hours at 35°C), with full cure in 5-7 days depending on temperature.
What surface preparation does it require?
The substrate must be sound, clean and dry with an open capillary structure, free of laitance, dust, oil, grease, curing compounds and other contaminants. New concrete should typically be cured at least 28 days. Mechanical preparation such as grit blasting, with oil removed by degreasing or steam cleaning, is recommended, and adhesion should be verified by pull-off test.

How we position Fosroc Trafficguard Primer

Trafficguard Primer should be specified strictly as part of a complete Fosroc Trafficguard deck system rather than as an interchangeable primer. Its natural pairings are Fosroc Trafficguard UR, UR100, UR150 and UR200 membranes and wear courses, with Fosroc Anti Slip Grain No. 2/No. 3 for keying and Fosroc Nitomortar FC for blowhole and substrate repair beforehand. Where a deck is epoxy-based rather than polyurethane, Fosroc’s Nitoflor epoxy primers and the Nitoflor flooring range are the relevant alternatives within the same brand. Against competitor systems, the closest equivalents are Sika’s Sikafloor car-park deck primers (e.g. Sikafloor-156/161 epoxy primers under Sikafloor traffic systems), MBS/MYK epoxy floor primers, Dr. Fixit’s Pidifin/Roofseal-led deck and primer range, and STP (Shalimar) deck-coating primers. The honest selection rule is system compatibility and warranty: a Trafficguard membrane should be installed over Trafficguard Primer, not mixed with a third-party primer, because the manufacturer’s performance and adhesion guarantees depend on using matched components. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplies the primer together with the correct membrane, wear course and grains so the specified system is delivered intact.
