A 1.5mm self-adhesive SBS bitumen membrane that fully bonds to concrete — no torch — for basements, tunnels and roof decks.

BrandMC-BauchemieCategoryWaterproofingFormA 1.5mm self-adhesive SBS-modified bitumen sheet membrane: black PE top film, polymer-modified bitumen adhesive…

What is it?

A 1.5mm self-adhesive SBS-modified bitumen sheet membrane: black PE top film, polymer-modified bitumen adhesive layer, and a silicone release film peeled off on installation.

Where is it used?

RCC roofs, terraces and roof gardens; basement and retaining-wall tanking; cut-and-cover tunnels, subways and underground pedestrian walkways.

Why use it?

Fully bonded to the substrate, so a puncture can’t let water track sideways underneath; 230% elongation, resists ground salts, chlorides and sulphates, and needs no torch on site.

How is it applied?

Unrolled onto smooth, dry concrete with the adhesive face down; 80-120mm side laps and minimum 120mm end laps are peeled, pressed and hand-rolled to remove air, then covered with a protective screed or board.

About MC-Bauchemie MC-Nafuplan 15

MC-Nafuplan 15 is MC-Bauchemie’s self-adhesive entry in the Nafuplan waterproofing range — a 1.5mm SBS-modified bitumen sheet that bonds cold onto prepared concrete, without the LPG torch that torch-on membranes need. On Indian sites that matters two ways: it takes an open-flame hazard out of confined basements, lift pits and tunnel sections, and it lets less specialised crews achieve a consistent bond if lap and roller discipline is followed. Built from a black PE top film, self-adhesive polymer-modified bitumen, and a peel-away silicone liner, MC-Bauchemie positions it for RCC roofs, roof gardens, retaining walls and cut-and-cover tunnel or subway linings.

On the numbers, MC-Bauchemie’s own data (ASTM/DIN tested) shows 2.5 N/mm² tensile strength, 230% elongation at break, and no leakage at 5 bar hydrostatic pressure for an hour — suited to Delhi NCR’s high water-table basements and monsoon terraces. Space Arc supplies and applies MC-Nafuplan 15 across Delhi NCR and pan-India; since sheet-membrane failures are almost always workmanship failures at laps rather than material failures, our site checks focus on overlap width, air-bubble rolling and termination detailing before any screed or backfill covers the membrane.

The technical insight

SBS modification is what gives the membrane 230% elongation without splitting: the rubbery butadiene portion lets it stretch and recover across minor substrate movement or hairline cracking, while the styrene portion resists flow in Indian roof-deck heat. Because it’s fully adhered rather than loose-laid, a puncture stays localised instead of letting water migrate to the nearest penetration or termination — the main reason specifiers pick self-adhesive, fully bonded systems for below-grade tanking. The hydrostatic test (5 bar for 1 hour) corresponds to roughly 50m of water head, well beyond most basement or retaining-wall exposure, though it’s no substitute for correct overlap and termination work, which MC-Bauchemie’s own data sheet flags as the real risk area on site.

Where it is used

  • RCC roofs, terraces and roof gardens, laid beneath a protective screed or paver bed
  • Underground basement retaining walls, against sub-soil moisture, chlorides and sulphate attack
  • Cut-and-cover tunnel lining
  • Subway boxes and underground pedestrian walkways
  • Fully bonded basement tanking, applied before backfill
  • Podium decks and habitable roof areas needing a fully adhered (not loose-laid) membrane
  • Pre-pour, under-raft waterproofing on blinding concrete ahead of foundation casting

Key advantages

  • Self-adhesive — no torch or hot bitumen, faster and safer in confined basements and tunnels
  • Fully bonded, so a puncture doesn’t let water track sideways under the sheet like loose-laid systems
  • 230% elongation at break absorbs minor substrate movement and shrinkage cracking
  • No water leakage at 5 bar hydrostatic pressure for 1 hour — suited to high water-table basements
  • Resists ground salts, chlorides and sulphates typical of Indian sub-soil and coastal sites
  • Workable down to -5°C with hot-air pre-heating at laps
  • Simpler skill requirement than torch-applied membranes, easing dependence on scarce torch crews

Limitations & considerations

  • Not for exposed use — must be protected by a screed or protection board; direct sun and traffic will degrade it
  • Needs a smooth, dry, contamination-free concrete surface; poor prep is the main cause of adhesion failure
  • Cold-weather laps need hot-air gun pre-heating, an easy step to skip on site
  • Performance hinges on lap width and roller discipline; the data sheet itself flags faulty joints as the main failure risk
  • As a sheet system it’s slower to detail around penetrations and irregular geometry than a liquid-applied or crystalline system such as MC-Nafuplan EW or MC-Nafuplan

Selection & best practice

Treat laps and terminations as the real performance driver, not the sheet itself. Confirm the substrate is smooth, dry and free of protrusions or laitance; hold side laps at 80-120mm and end laps at a strict minimum 120mm, peeling the release liner fully so both bitumen faces actually bond rather than resting against the liner. Roll every joint immediately with a hand roller to chase out trapped air, watch corners and upstands where membranes most often lift, and pre-heat laps with a hot air gun in cold or early-morning conditions. Walk and check every joint and termination before screed, protection board or backfill goes on — that inspection is your last practical chance to catch a puncture.

Frequently asked questions

Is MC-Nafuplan 15 self-adhesive, or do we need a torch?
Self-adhesive — you peel the release liner and press it onto primed, dry concrete. No LPG torch or open flame is needed, unlike torch-on bitumen membranes.
Can we leave it exposed on an open terrace?
No. MC-Bauchemie’s data sheet is explicit that it isn’t rated for direct sunlight or traffic exposure; it must be protected with a protective screed or protection board.
How much does one roll cover, and how much is lost to overlaps?
Each roll is 1m x 20m (20 sq.m gross). Budget roughly 10-15% extra for the mandatory 80-120mm side laps and 120mm end laps.
Does it work in cold weather or hill-station projects?
It can be installed down to -5°C, but MC-Bauchemie recommends pre-heating the adhesive edge at every lap with a hot air gun so the joint bonds fully.
Will it hold up under basement water pressure?
Tested to no water leakage at 5 bar for 1 hour (DIN 16726-2011 / ASTM D5385-2000), which covers most basement and retaining-wall water-table conditions in Delhi NCR.
What if the membrane gets punctured before the screed goes down?
Patch it with an over-sized piece on a clean, dry area fixed with a compatible double-adhesive tape, and recheck all laps and terminations before covering.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-Nafuplan 15

Within MC-Bauchemie’s own Nafuplan range, MC-Nafuplan 15 sits next to MC-Nafuplan (a cementitious crystalline coating that waterproofs the concrete matrix itself rather than sitting on top of it) and MC-Nafuplan EW (a liquid-applied elastic polymer-bitumen coating for roof slabs where a seamless, cold-applied finish is preferred over sheet laps). Choose the sheet membrane for large, relatively flat decks and vertical tanking; choose MC-Nafuplan or MC-Nafuplan 2K for intricate detailing, pipe penetrations and wet-area corners. Outside the MC-Bauchemie stable, Fosroc’s Proofex Torchseal 4SI Standard is the closest genuine equivalent — a 4mm, APP-modified, polyester-reinforced bituminous membrane — and a specifier might choose it where the site crew is already set up for torch-on work, or where the extra thickness suits heavier podium traffic.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 4SI Standard — A specifier might choose the Fosroc option where the site crew is already set up for torch-on application, or where the extra thickness (4mm vs 1.5mm) and polyester reinforcement of an APP-modified membrane suit heavier podium or vehicular-deck loading.
