The technical insight
The membrane works on two mechanisms that a liquid coating cannot fully replicate. First, adhesion: the SBS-modified bitumen is a pressure-sensitive adhesive, so rolling and pressing the sheet develops a continuous, fully-bonded contact with the primed concrete. That intimate bond is what defeats lateral water tracking, the failure mode where a single defect in a loosely-laid or air-gapped membrane lets water spread invisibly and reappear far from the entry point. Second, the SBS polymer network: styrene-butadiene-styrene gives the bitumen a rubbery, elastic phase that raises its softening point and lets the sheet stretch over hairline substrate movement and then recover, rather than the brittle cracking that unmodified oxidised bitumen suffers in temperature swings. The polyethylene top film adds mechanical toughness and, together with the dense bitumen core, makes the sheet an effective vapour barrier, so it also blocks the upward diffusion of moisture and ground gases into slabs and basements. Selection & best practice
Treat the substrate as the make-or-break step. The deck should be structurally sound, cured, cleaned back to a firm surface and genuinely dry, with sharp arrises knocked off and cove fillets formed at floor-to-wall junctions. Apply the recommended MC-Bauchemie primer and let it develop before laying so the self-adhesive bitumen keys properly. Set out and dry-lay the roll first, then peel the silicone release film progressively while rolling the sheet down and pressing it hard with a roller to drive out air and develop full contact. Overlap adjacent sheets to the specified lap, and roll every seam so the bitumen fuses edge-to-edge. Reinforce all critical details, at internal and external corners, drain bodies, pipe penetrations and upstands, before the field sheets, since these are where leaks begin. Protect the finished membrane promptly with screed, protection board or the specified finish so it is not damaged by follow-on trades or left exposed to UV.
