Sika Separol
A ready-to-use, oil-based form release agent that strips clean, protects your formwork, and leaves an even, fair-faced concrete surface pour after pour.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, oil-based form release agent (shuttering release) from Sika that lets concrete and grout part cleanly from steel, aluminium, plastic or timber formwork.
Where is it used?
Cast-in-place RCC frames, precast yards, and any repetitive shuttering where a clean strip and a fair-faced finish matter.
Why use it?
It cuts sticking and surface blemishes, reduces air-bubble pockmarking, and extends formwork life across repeated pours without staining the concrete.
How is it applied?
Brush, roller or spray a single thin, continuous film onto clean formwork before every pour. No mixing, no dilution.
About Sika Separol
Sika Separol is one of the most straightforward products on a construction chemical shelf, and that is exactly why site teams keep reaching for it. It is a ready-to-use, oil-based form release agent that you apply straight from the drum onto the face of your shuttering. When the concrete cures and it is time to strike, the formwork lets go cleanly instead of tearing at the surface or leaving concrete stuck to the panels. That single behaviour saves an enormous amount of downstream effort: less patching, less cleaning between cycles, and less wear on expensive steel and ply panels.
Beyond the clean release, Separol is really about finish quality and formwork economy. Because it forms a thin, non-staining film, the concrete face comes out even and free of the blotching that plagues fair-faced and architectural work, and it helps reduce the blowholes and air-bubble pitting that show up on vertical elements. It suits all types of concrete and works on steel, aluminium, plastic and wooden formwork alike, so a single product covers most of what a mixed site throws at it. For contractors running repetitive pours, the fact that it extends the working life of the shuttering is often the number that matters most on the cost sheet.
The technical insight
A form release agent has to solve two competing problems: it must break the bond between fresh concrete and the mould face, yet it cannot bleed into or stain the finished surface. Separol does this as a physical barrier. Being a low-density oil (around 0.830 kg/L at 25 degrees C), it wets out into a thin, continuous film that sits between the alkaline cement paste and the formwork. Cement paste cannot key into that oiled interface, so when hydration is complete the panel releases with minimal suction and no surface tearing. The same film blankets the formwork face so entrapped air can migrate and escape more freely as concrete is placed and vibrated, which is why properly applied Separol reduces blowholes on the struck face. Because it is a plain oil rather than a chemically reactive emulsion, it does not depend on reacting with concrete alkali to work, but it also means film thickness is everything: too heavy a coat can retard the surface or leave an oily bloom, while too thin a coat risks localised grabbing. The discipline is a single, even, wiped-out film, not a flood.
Where it is used
- Steel and aluminium panel formwork on cast-in-place RCC building frames
- Timber and plywood shuttering for beams, columns, slabs and walls
- Precast and repetitive mould work where fast, repeated demoulding is needed
- Architectural and fair-faced concrete requiring a clean, unstained surface
- Vertical elements where blowhole and air-bubble reduction is important
- Plastic-faced formwork and moulds on infrastructure and building sites
- Formwork used in damp and curing processes
- General building concrete across residential and commercial projects
Key advantages
- Ready to use straight from the drum, no mixing or dilution and no batching error on site
- Clean, fast stripping that speeds up formwork cycles and reduces labour on cleaning
- Non-staining film delivers even, fair-faced concrete suitable for architectural work
- Reduces air bubbles and blowholes on the struck concrete surface
- Extends the working life of steel, aluminium, plastic and ply formwork
- Economical consumption, especially on non-absorbent metal and plastic faces
- Works on all common formwork materials, so one product covers a mixed site
- Suitable for formwork used in curing and damp processes, and weather resistant once dry
Limitations & considerations
- Oil-based rather than a water-thinnable emulsion, so consumption is higher on absorbent timber than on metal formwork
- Over-application leaves an oily film that can retard the surface, bloom, or interfere with later coatings and bonding
- Freshly applied film must be protected from rain for at least one hour before it becomes weather resistant
- Flammable oil base, so open flames, welding and hot works must be kept away during and just after application
- Formwork must be cleaned of hardened concrete build-up before every re-coat, or release performance drops off
Selection & best practice
Start with genuinely clean formwork: strip off any hardened concrete build-up, dust, grease and old residue, because Separol cannot compensate for a dirty or scaled panel. Steel formwork should be dry. Apply a single, uniform, continuous thin layer over the full face by brush, roller or spray, then wipe out or back-roll any pooling so you leave a film, not a puddle. On absorbent timber you will use more; on metal and plastic you will use much less, so meter it accordingly and confirm real consumption with a site trial rather than the drum figure alone. For architectural or fair-faced pours, run a preliminary trial panel and tune the coat so you get clean release without any oily transfer to the concrete. Keep freshly coated formwork out of rain for at least an hour, ensure good ventilation when working in shafts, ditches or confined pours, and keep all naked flames and hot works well clear while the film is wet.

Industry use cases
RCC building frames
Coats steel and ply shuttering on columns, beams and slabs so panels strike clean and cycle faster across multiple floors.
Precast yards
Ideal for repetitive moulds where fast, damage-free demoulding directly drives daily casting output and mould longevity.
Architectural / fair-faced concrete
Its non-staining film gives the even, blemish-reduced surface that exposed and off-shutter concrete demands.
Infrastructure works
Handles steel, aluminium and plastic panel formwork on bridges, culverts and other repetitive cast-in-place elements.

How we position Sika Separol
Sika Separol is the workhorse oil-based release agent in the Sika mould-release family. If you want the same clean-strip behaviour but need an economical concentrate that dilutes with water, look at Sika Separol Plus. For related concrete-finishing needs on the same pour, Sika Antisol (A-1, A-4, A-4 White and E WP) covers spray-applied curing compounds, and Sika Rustoff-100 handles rust removal on reinforcement and steel formwork. Across our other brands, contractors on chemical-release or water-based systems often compare Fosroc’s Reebol line and MC-Bauchemie release agents; our team can match the right release agent to your formwork material, finish spec and pour cycle.
Fosroc Reebol Emulsion — Choose the Fosroc water-based chemical emulsion when you want a dilutable concentrate that reacts with concrete alkali and gives high coverage economy, rather than Separol’s neat oil film.
