What is it?

A one-part, moisture-cured, aromatic pure polyurethane liquid membrane with over 80% solids that forms a jointless elastic waterproofing film.

Where is it used?

Flat and low-slope roofs, terraces, balconies, planters and green-roof decks, plus complex detailing on commercial, institutional and residential buildings.

Why use it?

It seals right over parapets, drains, pipe penetrations and upstands without laps or torching, giving a monolithic barrier that flexes with the structure and bridges hairline cracks.

How is it applied?

Rolled, brushed or squeegeed cold onto a clean, primed substrate in a base, top and seal coat sequence, curing on contact with atmospheric moisture.

About Sika Sikalastic-610 R IN

Sikalastic-610 R IN is Sika’s single-component, cold-applied liquid waterproofing membrane built on aromatic pure polyurethane chemistry. Supplied ready to use in 25 kg containers, it needs no mixing of components and no naked flame on site, which makes it well suited to occupied buildings, congested rooftops and detail-heavy areas where a torch-applied or sheet system would be awkward or unsafe. Once spread, it reacts with moisture in the air and cures into a continuous elastic film with more than 80% solids by weight, so shrinkage on cure stays low and film build is predictable coat to coat.

For engineers and applicators, the appeal is the seamless finish. A liquid membrane wraps drains, gullies, pipe collars, parapets and irregular geometry as one unbroken layer, removing the overlaps and welded seams that are the usual failure points in a roof. The cured film stays flexible across a wide service range and bridges movement in the substrate, while remaining vapour permeable so trapped construction moisture can escape rather than blister the coating. It is also root-resistant, which lets the same system carry into planter boxes and green-roof build-ups without a separate root barrier.

The technical insight

The performance comes from the pure polyurethane backbone. Unlike acrylic or cementitious coatings that dry by evaporation, Sikalastic-610 R IN is moisture-triggered: isocyanate groups in the resin react with ambient humidity to build a densely cross-linked, elastomeric polymer directly on the deck. Because it is single-component and high-solids, that reaction produces a tough film with minimal solvent loss and low water absorption, so the membrane does not soften or swell under standing water. The polyurethane network gives it its two defining properties at once. High tensile and adhesion values keep the film keyed to the substrate and resistant to tearing, while the elastomeric chain structure lets it stretch and recover, bridging shrinkage and thermal cracks up to roughly 2 mm without splitting. That combination of grip and elasticity is what allows one seamless coat to handle both the flat field of a roof and the high-stress movement zones at upstands and joints.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing flat and low-slope roofs on commercial, institutional and industrial buildings
  • Green roofs, roof gardens and planter boxes needing a root-resistant membrane
  • Terraces and balconies, including decks that later receive adhesive-bonded tiles
  • Sealing complex roof details, upstands, parapets, gutters and pipe penetrations
  • Re-waterproofing and life-extension overlays on ageing or failing roof systems
  • Refurbishment of areas with restricted access where hot works are not permitted
  • Concealed and covered decks where a seamless, monolithic barrier is required
  • Detail bridging over cracks and construction joints in conjunction with reinforcing fleece

Key advantages

  • Single-component and ready to use, so no on-site mixing errors or wastage
  • Cold applied with no torch or naked flame, safer on occupied and access-restricted sites
  • Seamless, jointless film that eliminates the lap and seam failures of sheet systems
  • Elastic with crack-bridging up to around 2 mm to accommodate substrate movement
  • High solids above 80% by weight for good film build and low shrinkage on cure
  • Root-resistant, letting the system run straight into planters and green-roof build-ups
  • Vapour permeable, allowing residual substrate moisture to escape without blistering
  • Bonds to and wraps around complex geometry that is difficult to sheet-waterproof

Limitations & considerations

  • Moisture-cured chemistry means curing slows in cold, high-humidity conditions and speeds up in heat, so timing needs planning
  • Substrate moisture must be below 4% by weight with no rising damp, requiring a dry, tested deck before application
  • Application is restricted to roughly +10C to +40C air and substrate, limiting work in extreme weather
  • As an aromatic polyurethane, the exposed film can chalk or discolour under prolonged UV; a UV-stable top coat is advised for permanently exposed decks
  • Correct total consumption must be achieved across coats, or thin spots will under-perform, so wet-film control is essential
  • Being liquid applied, final quality depends heavily on surface preparation, priming and applicator skill

Selection & best practice

Success is decided before the first coat goes down. Confirm the substrate is sound, clean and dry, with moisture below 4% by weight and no rising damp, testing to ASTM D4263 where in doubt, then prime with the appropriate Sika primer. Work only within roughly +10C to +40C on both air and substrate and within the recommended humidity window, and avoid application when rain is imminent. Apply in the intended base, top and seal coat sequence to reach the specified total consumption of about 1.2 to 1.8 kg per square metre, checking wet-film thickness as you go rather than trusting the eye. Reinforce movement-prone details such as cracks, joints, upstands and pipe collars with fleece or reinforcing tape embedded in the membrane. Stir gently to disperse the product but avoid over-mixing, which entrains air and pinholes the film. Respect the recovery and cure intervals between coats, and where the deck stays permanently exposed to sunlight, finish with a UV-stable top coat to protect the aromatic polyurethane.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikalastic-610 R IN single-component or does it need mixing?
It is a genuinely single-component product, supplied ready to use in 25 kg containers. There is no separate hardener to blend, which removes mix-ratio errors; you only stir it gently to disperse before applying and avoid over-mixing so you do not entrain air.
How much material do I need per square metre?
Plan for roughly 1.2 to 1.8 kg per square metre in total across the base, top and seal coats, depending on substrate texture and the detailing involved. Always verify against wet-film thickness on site rather than area alone, since a rough or porous deck consumes more.
Can it be walked on or planted over after curing?
Yes. Once fully cured it forms a tough, elastic film, and because it is root-resistant it can be built over with green-roof and planter systems. Terraces and balconies can also receive adhesive-bonded tiles over the membrane once it has cured.
What condition does the substrate need to be in?
The deck must be clean, sound, primed and dry, with moisture below 4% by weight and no rising damp; test to ASTM D4263 if unsure. Applying over a damp or contaminated substrate is the most common cause of adhesion loss and blistering.
How soon is it rainproof and fully cured?
At around +23°C and 50% relative humidity it becomes rain resistant in roughly 12 hours and reaches full cure in about 24 hours. Cold, humid weather slows this down and hot, dry weather speeds it up, so schedule coats and expected rainfall accordingly.
Is it suitable for permanently sun-exposed roofs?
It performs excellently as a waterproofing layer, but it is an aromatic polyurethane, so on decks that stay permanently exposed to sunlight we recommend finishing with a UV-stable top coat to prevent chalking and discolouration over time. Under tiles, screed or green-roof build-ups this is not a concern.

How we position Sika Sikalastic-610 R IN

Sikalastic-610 R IN sits at the premium, seamless end of Space Arc’s liquid waterproofing range and pairs naturally with the wider Sika roofing system. Specify it with the matching Sika primer for the substrate in question, embed Sika reinforcing fleece at cracks and detailing, and where sun exposure is a factor, close the build-up with a UV-stable Sika top coat. On decks that need a tile finish, it works alongside Sika tile adhesives and grouts from our tile-fixing range. Where a project instead calls for a cementitious, breathable coating on green or damp concrete, our Sika cementitious waterproofing slurries are the better fit than a PU liquid. Across brands, we also stock equivalent PU liquid membranes and torch-applied bituminous systems, so we can match the right technology to the deck, the exposure and the budget rather than forcing one product onto every roof.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitoproof 600PF — A single-component, pitch-free moisture-cured PU liquid membrane that is a close counterpart; a specifier may prefer it where the project is standardised on Fosroc systems or needs its higher rated elongation on heavily buried or covered decks.
