STP ShaliRustOff-A
A chloride and sulphate free acidic liquid that lifts rust off steel surfaces, tanks and reinforcement before you prime, coat or repair.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, chloride and sulphate free acidic liquid rust remover from STP Limited, formulated to strip surface rust from mild steel without aggressive blasting.
Where is it used?
Structural steelwork, water pipelines, storage tanks, shuttering plates and corroded reinforcement bars during repair and rehabilitation.
Why use it?
It reaches pitted and hard-to-access rusted areas that mechanical cleaning misses, so the substrate is genuinely clean before a primer or protective coating goes on.
How is it applied?
Brushed or swabbed onto rusted steel, left to react for 15 to 30 minutes, then the loosened rust is dusted or scrubbed away; a second coat is applied where rust persists.
About STP ShaliRustOff
STP ShaliRustOff is the rust-removal step that sits between a corroded steel surface and the coating system that is meant to protect it. On site, painters and applicators often meet steel that carries a film of oxide too fine or too pitted to lift by wire brush alone. Left in place, that rust becomes a weak layer under the new coating and the corrosion simply carries on beneath the paint. ShaliRustOff is an acidic liquid, light pink in colour, that chemically loosens this rust so it can be removed and the bare steel exposed. Because it is free of chloride and sulphate salts, it does not seed fresh corrosion the way some cheaper acid washes can, which matters when the same steel will later be encased in concrete or exposed to a marine or industrial atmosphere.
For engineers and contractors in Delhi NCR and across India, the appeal is practical. Full grit or shot blasting is rarely available for in-situ maintenance work on a running plant, a water line or an occupied structure, and ShaliRustOff gives a workable alternative for mild to moderate rust. It is supplied ready to use, needs only a stir before application, and works with the tools a maintenance crew already carries. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised STP channel partner, pairing the product with the primers, zinc-rich coatings and repair mortars that complete the corrosion-protection sequence.
The technical insight
Rust is hydrated iron oxide, a bulky, flaky layer that is only loosely bonded to the sound steel underneath. ShaliRustOff is acidic in nature, and that acidity attacks the oxide, breaking the bond between the rust scale and the parent metal so that what was tightly adhering corrosion becomes loose particles you can brush away. As the reaction proceeds, the treated area returns from red-brown rust to the original blackish steel tone, which is the visual cue that conversion at the surface is complete. The 15 to 30 minute dwell gives the acid time to work into pitting and crevices that a wire brush skips over entirely. Two points govern good results: the steel must be within a 5 to 40 degrees C substrate temperature window for the chemistry to behave predictably, and because the product is acidic, any residue must be neutralised and washed off with clean water before a primer is applied, or the trapped acid will undermine adhesion and can itself promote corrosion. This is also why STP advises against using it on cleaned rusted rebar in critical RCC members, where residual acid near embedded steel is an unacceptable risk.
Where it is used
- Removing surface rust from structural steel columns, beams and trusses before maintenance painting
- Descaling the internal and external surfaces of steel water and effluent storage tanks
- Cleaning rust from steel water pipelines and penstocks prior to lining or coating
- Reconditioning steel shuttering and formwork plates so they release cleanly and prime well
- Treating lightly to moderately corroded reinforcement bars during concrete repair, away from critical RCC zones
- Preparing rusted steel equipment, fabrications and plant items for re-coating in situ
- Spot rust treatment on gates, railings, gratings and access platforms
- Surface cleaning of steel embeds and inserts before protective priming
Key advantages
- Chloride and sulphate free, so it will not introduce corrosive salts that trigger fresh rusting under the new coating
- Reaches into pitting and tight corners that wire brushing and grinding physically cannot clean
- Supplied ready to use, needing only a stir before it is brushed or swabbed on
- Avoids the cost, dust and access problems of full grit or shot blasting for in-situ maintenance
- Clear visual endpoint, as the surface darkens back to bare steel tone when the rust has lifted
- A second coat can be applied over a dry first coat to deal with stubborn residual rust
- Economical per square metre and applied with tools a maintenance crew already has
- Backed by STP, a long-established Indian construction-chemicals manufacturer, and stocked by Space Arc for Pan-India supply
Limitations & considerations
- It is a rust remover, not a primer or a coating, so it must always be followed by a proper protective system
- Being acidic, all residue must be washed off with clean water before priming or the acid will spoil coating adhesion
- Should not be used on cleaned rusted rebar in critical RCC structures, where residual acid near embedded steel is a risk
- Works on mild to moderate rust on mild steel; heavily corroded or deeply scaled sections still need mechanical removal first
- Effective only within a 5 to 40 degrees C substrate temperature range, which can limit peak-summer or cold-morning work
- Not intended for zinc, galvanised or non-ferrous surfaces, where an acidic remover can cause damage
Selection & best practice
Start by knocking off loose scale and flaking rust with a wire brush, chipping tool or grinder, then blow the surface down with dry air so ShaliRustOff meets sound rust rather than debris. Confirm the substrate sits between 5 and 40 degrees C. Stir the liquid on a slow-speed paddle and let it stand briefly so entrained air escapes. Apply an even film by brush or cotton-waste swab and leave it undisturbed for 15 to 30 minutes until the surface darkens toward bare steel; then dust or scrub off the loosened rust. Where rust still shows, let the first coat dry bone dry and apply a second. This is the critical step for coating life: wash the treated steel thoroughly with clean water to remove every trace of acid, let it dry, and only then apply your primer or protective coating without delay so the clean steel does not flash-rust. Never leave ShaliRustOff on rebar in critical reinforced-concrete members.

Industry use cases
Water Infrastructure
Rust removal from the inside and outside of steel storage tanks, pipelines and penstocks before lining or re-coating, without dry-blasting a live asset.
Industrial Plants
In-situ descaling of structural steel, gantries and equipment during shutdown maintenance where blasting is impractical near running process lines.
Building Repair & Rehabilitation
Cleaning lightly corroded reinforcement and steel embeds during concrete repair, followed by a zinc-rich primer, while keeping clear of critical RCC members.
Infrastructure & Bridges
Spot and area rust treatment on steel members, bearings, gratings and railings ahead of protective painting on bridges and public structures.
Fabrication & Formwork
Reconditioning rusted steel shuttering plates and fabricated items so they present a clean, primable surface and release cleanly on the next pour.

How we position STP ShaliRustOff
Within the STP range, ShaliRustOff is the cleaning step, not the protection step, so it is naturally paired with STP’s own primers and coatings. On non-critical steel and rebar, follow it with ShaliPrime RC, STP’s water-based rust converter cum primer, or move straight to a zinc-rich anti-corrosive primer where the steel will stay exposed. For the concrete-repair sequence, it sits alongside STP’s polymer-modified repair mortars once the rebar is cleaned and passivated. Where a specifier prefers a single-brand corrosion system from our other lines, Fosroc’s Nitozinc Primer STD is a proven two-component epoxy zinc-rich primer for exposed reinforcement and structural steel, and Fosroc Reebaklens RR offers an equivalent acid rust-remover-and-etch on the Fosroc side. Space Arc can supply the full sequence, remover through to topcoat, from a single point.
Fosroc Reebaklens RR — Choose the Fosroc option when the job is already specified on a Fosroc corrosion system, or when you want a rust remover and etch that carries the Fosroc reinforcement-repair approval for the same step.
