What is it?

A dark brown liquid plasticiser based on modified naphthalene formaldehyde sulphonate that reduces mixing water while keeping concrete cohesive and easy to place.

Where is it used?

Reinforced slabs, foundations, walls, columns, precast units, pavements and ready-mix concrete on medium to large jobs.

Why use it?

It cuts water demand so you gain strength, density and a cleaner finish at the same slump, or higher slump at the same water content.

How is it applied?

Dose at 0.5-2.0% by cement weight, adding it to the gauging water or into the mixer after 50-70% of water is in, then wet-mix for at least 60 seconds.

About Sika Sikament-4101 NS

Sikament-4101 NS is a general-purpose water-reducing and plasticising admixture from Sika, built on a modified naphthalene formaldehyde sulphonate chemistry. In practical terms it lets a site crew take a stiff, hard-to-place mix and turn it into free-flowing concrete that still holds together, or hold the original workability while stripping out a meaningful share of the mixing water. That second route is where the real value sits: less water at the same slump means a lower water-cement ratio, and a lower water-cement ratio is what drives higher compressive strength, denser concrete and better watertightness. It is a dependable, cost-effective admixture for the everyday structural work that makes up most of an Indian project, rather than a specialist high-range product reserved for exotic mixes.

For contractors and RMC producers, the appeal is consistency across the pour. The admixture improves how well concrete keeps its workability during transport and handling, so concrete that leaves the batching plant in good condition still places and compacts cleanly by the time it reaches the form. It complies with IS 9103-1999 and ASTM C494, which matters when a consultant or third-party lab is signing off on the mix design. At Space Arc Engineering we supply Sikament-4101 NS as an authorised distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India, in 275 kg containers or bulk, and we back it with the site-trial guidance that decides the right dosage for your specific cement and aggregates.

The technical insight

The mechanism is electrostatic dispersion. Cement grains carry surface charges that make them clump into flocs the moment they meet water, and those flocs trap water inside them where it does no useful work for placement. The sulphonated naphthalene molecules adsorb onto the cement particles and give them a strong negative charge, so the grains repel one another and the flocs break apart. Two things follow. First, the water that was locked inside the flocs is released and becomes free to lubricate the mix, which is why the same batch suddenly flows more easily. Second, because that trapped water is now available, you can remove some of the added water entirely and still hit your target slump. Every litre of water you take out lowers the water-cement ratio, and it is that ratio, more than almost anything else, that governs the strength and durability of the hardened concrete. Naphthalene-based dispersants like this one give a solid, reliable dose response but a shorter open window than modern polycarboxylate ethers, which is why the material is pitched at normal placing times rather than long-haul RMC where extended retention is critical.

Where it is used

  • Reinforced floors, slabs and raft foundations where good flow around steel is needed
  • Walls and columns that call for a cohesive, well-compacted finish
  • Ready-mix concrete for medium to large structural projects
  • Precast concrete elements produced in a yard
  • Concrete pavements and hardstandings needing extended workability
  • Water-reduced mixes targeting higher grade and improved durability
  • General structural concrete where a cost-effective plasticiser suits the mix
  • Pump mixes needing improved cohesion to resist segregation in the line

Key advantages

  • Reduces mixing water so you gain compressive strength and density at the same slump
  • Produces free-flowing concrete that still resists bleeding and segregation
  • Improves workability retention through transport, handling and placing
  • Delivers a smoother, more watertight surface finish on struck concrete
  • Complies with IS 9103-1999 and ASTM C494 for straightforward mix approval
  • Works across a wide 0.5-2.0% dosage band, so it suits many mix designs
  • Cost-effective for the bulk of routine structural concrete on a project
  • Compatible with ordinary and blended cements common on Indian sites

Limitations & considerations

  • Naphthalene chemistry gives shorter slump retention than polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticisers, so it is not ideal for long RMC haul times
  • Not a high-range water reducer; extreme water cuts or self-compacting concrete need a PCE product
  • Overdosing can cause set retardation or bleeding, so site trials are essential
  • Correct dosage depends on cement type, aggregates and temperature and must be confirmed on the actual mix
  • Effective wet-mixing of at least 60 seconds is needed to disperse it fully

Selection & best practice

Fix the working dosage by trial on your own materials rather than defaulting to a mid-band figure, because cement chemistry and aggregate grading shift the response. Add Sikament-4101 NS to the gauging water, or into the mixer only after 50-70% of the water is already in, never onto dry cement, and then run the wet mix for a minimum of 60 seconds so the dispersant coats the grains evenly. Keep the water-cement ratio you save honest by measuring aggregate moisture, otherwise the strength gain you paid for leaks away. Store drums between +10C and +40C, out of direct sun and frost, and use within the 12-month shelf life. If your pour involves a long transit or hot-weather placing, plan the timing around the shorter retention window or step up to a PCE-based Sika superplasticiser.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mix Concrete

Plants use it to hold workability from batching to placing on medium and large pours while trimming water for a stronger, denser mix.

Precast Yards

Gives cohesive, well-finished units with good surface quality, suiting the controlled conditions of a casting yard.

Building Structures

Improves flow around congested reinforcement in slabs, walls and columns so concrete compacts fully with fewer voids.

Infrastructure & Pavements

Extends the workable window for concrete pavements and hardstandings that need time to lay and finish.

Water-Retaining Works

The lower water-cement ratio and tighter surface improve watertightness where durability against moisture matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikament-4101 NS a superplasticiser or a plasticiser?
It is a water-reducing plasticiser based on naphthalene sulphonate. It disperses cement effectively for everyday structural concrete, but for very high water reduction or self-compacting mixes you want a high-range PCE superplasticiser instead.
What dosage should I use?
The range is 0.5% to 2.0% by weight of cement. The exact figure depends on your cement, aggregates and target slump, so it should be fixed by site trials rather than assumed. Higher dosages are possible with engineer approval.
When do I add it to the mix?
Add it to the mixing water, or into the mixer after 50-70% of the water has gone in. Do not add it to dry cement, and wet-mix for at least 60 seconds so it disperses fully.
Does it meet Indian standards?
Yes. It complies with IS 9103-1999 and ASTM C494, so it fits standard mix designs and third-party approval requirements on Indian projects.
What is its shelf life and how should it be stored?
Twelve months in sealed containers, stored between +10C and +40C, away from direct sun and frost. Keep drums closed when not in use.
Can Space Arc supply it across India and advise on the mix?
Yes. We are an authorised Sika distributor supplying 275 kg containers and bulk across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with trial and dosage guidance for your specific materials.

How we position Sika Sikament-4101 NS

Sikament-4101 NS sits in the workhorse tier of Sika’s admixture range: a reliable naphthalene-based water reducer for routine structural concrete. Where a job needs long slump retention for extended RMC haul, hot-weather placing or self-compacting concrete, step up to a polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticiser from the Sika range for the wider water reduction and longer open time. If your priority is a fair-faced or watertight finish, pair the mix with the right Sika curing compound and, on water-retaining structures, a Sika waterproofing admixture. Across our other brands we can cross-refer to equivalent SNF and PCE admixtures from Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie so specifiers can match the chemistry to the standard called up on their project.
