Sika Sikafloor EpoCem ES-14 AP
The three-part epoxy-cement screed that lets you lay resin floors over damp, green or high-moisture concrete without waiting months for it to dry.
What is it?
A three-part, water-based epoxy-modified cementitious system that combines Sikafloor-80 EpoCem primer, Sikafloor-81 EpoCem levelling screed and a Sikafloor-264 HC N epoxy scratch coat into a 2-3 mm self-smoothing floor that doubles as a temporary moisture barrier.
Where is it used?
Under epoxy, PU and PMMA resin floors, tiles, sheet and wood flooring in food and beverage plants, pharma units, car parks, warehouses and any interior where the slab is damp, freshly cast or holds high residual moisture.
Why use it?
It is impervious to liquids yet permeable to water vapour, so it stops osmotic blistering of resin coatings applied over slabs that would otherwise need weeks of drying, saving programme time on live projects.
How is it applied?
Prime the prepared substrate, apply the pumped or trowelled EpoCem screed at 2-3 mm, then finish with one or two epoxy scratch coats once surface moisture drops below 4% before the resin topping goes down.
About Sika Sikafloor EpoCem ES-14 AP
Concrete holds water long after it looks dry to the eye, and that trapped moisture is the single biggest reason resin floors fail. As vapour tries to escape through an impermeable epoxy or PU coating, it lifts the film off the slab in blisters and pinholes. Sikafloor EpoCem ES-14 AP was built specifically to break that cycle. It is an epoxy-modified cementitious system, supplied in three parts, that behaves like a breathable membrane: watertight against liquids from above, yet open enough to let water vapour pass through from the slab below. That single property is what lets contractors lay high-performance resin floors over green or damp concrete instead of losing weeks to drying time.
The full ES-14 AP build-up is a defined Sika system rather than a single tin. Sikafloor-80 EpoCem primer seals and grips the substrate, Sikafloor-81 EpoCem is the self-smoothing levelling screed laid at a nominal 2-3 mm, and one or two coats of Sikafloor-264 HC N epoxy (blended with 2% Sika Extender T) form the scratch coat that closes the surface before the final topping. The screed carries a Class R4 rating to EN 1504-3, is solvent-free and odourless, resists frost and de-icing salts, and expands and contracts much like the concrete it sits on, so it stays bonded through temperature swings on Indian sites.
The technical insight
The system works because of how it manages moisture rather than blocking it. A conventional epoxy screed is a closed film: any vapour driven up by residual slab moisture or osmotic pressure has nowhere to go and eventually forces the coating off. EpoCem instead pairs a cementitious matrix, which hydrates using the water already in the mix and tolerates a damp interface, with an epoxy modification that gives chemical resistance and mechanical strength. The cured layer is dense enough to be impervious to liquids but retains the microporosity of cement, so water vapour migrates through and dissipates instead of building pressure under the finish. Because it bonds to green or hardened concrete, wet or dry, and expands thermally close to concrete, it also relieves the differential-movement stresses that crack rigid toppings. As a temporary moisture barrier it must be laid at a minimum 2 mm (about 4.5 kg/m2); the resin topping only follows once the EpoCem surface reads below 4% moisture on a Tramex-type meter, which is the checkpoint that guarantees the finish will not blister.
Where it is used
- Temporary moisture barrier at minimum 2 mm under epoxy, PU and PMMA resin floors over damp or green concrete
- Self-smoothing levelling screed to true up horizontal concrete before resin, tile, sheet, carpet or wood flooring
- Floor topping on non-ventilated damp substrates where appearance is not critical
- Levelling and patching of new or repaired concrete in aggressive chemical environments
- Repair and maintenance of monolithic and vacuum-processed concrete floors
- Preparation layer for smooth resin finishes in food, beverage and pharma production areas
- Extended with quartz sand as a patching and repair mortar for car parks, maintenance hangars and wet-process areas
- Slip-resistant, easily cleanable base build-up in beverage and food industry wet zones
Key advantages
- Lets resin floors be applied over green or high-moisture concrete, cutting weeks of slab drying time
- Impervious to liquids but permeable to water vapour, preventing osmotic blistering of the topping
- Overcoatable with resin floors after roughly 24 hours at +20C and 75% r.h.
- Water-based, solvent-free and odourless, suitable for occupied and enclosed interiors
- Bonds excellently to green or hardened concrete whether the surface is damp or dry
- Class R4 to EN 1504-3 with good early and final mechanical strength
- Frost, de-icing salt and good chemical resistance for demanding process floors
- Thermal expansion close to concrete, so it resists cracking and delamination through temperature change
Limitations & considerations
- Specialist system for experienced applicators only; not a DIY or general-purpose levelling compound
- As a moisture barrier it must be laid at a minimum 2 mm; thinner layers do not perform as a TMB
- Never add water to the mix, and avoid application in high-heat, low-humidity conditions that force fast drying, as curing compounds cannot be used
- Fresh screed must be protected from damp, condensation, water, direct sun and strong wind for at least 24 hours
- Substrate must stay at least 3C above dew point, and primer and screed should go down on a falling temperature to avoid pinholing
- Colour of the unsealed screed can vary under direct sunlight, though this does not affect mechanical properties
Selection & best practice
Treat ES-14 AP as a sequence, not a single product. Start with a mechanically prepared, sound substrate and apply Sikafloor-80 EpoCem primer at 0.2-0.3 kg/m2 per coat, allowing the temperature-dependent waiting time (for example 6-48 hours at +20C) before the screed. Mix and place Sikafloor-81 EpoCem within its pot life, which is only about 20 minutes at +20C and just 10 minutes at +30C, so batch to what the crew can lay. Keep ambient and substrate temperature between +10C and +35C, relative humidity at or below 80%, and vacuum the screed surface clean before the scratch coat. Do not apply the vapour-tight scratch coat or resin topping until surface moisture falls below 4% on a Tramex-type meter; verify moisture again if more than 5-7 days pass after laying. Pre-treat non-moving joints and static cracks with primer, EpoCem and a Sikadur or Sikafloor epoxy fill, assess dynamic cracks over 0.4 mm on site, and apply a second scratch coat wherever pinholes or defects persist. Ensure good ventilation in confined spaces to clear excess moisture during cure.

How we position Sika Sikafloor EpoCem ES-14 AP
Sikafloor EpoCem ES-14 AP is positioned for one specific problem: getting a durable resin floor onto concrete that is still damp or freshly cast. If your slab is fully dry, a straight resin system such as a Sikafloor-264 based build-up may be all you need, and the EpoCem step can be omitted. Where you need a heavier, self-levelling epoxy wearing floor rather than a moisture barrier, look at Sika’s Sikafloor levelling and topping range. For localised structural repair before levelling, the SikaTop and Sikadur repair mortars from the same Sika family are the natural companions, and for moving joints the Sikaflex and Sikadur crack-treatment products complete the detail. Across our other brands, we also stock epoxy grouts and repair mortars from Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie; however, none of these offers a true epoxy-cement, vapour-permeable temporary moisture barrier equivalent to EpoCem, so for the damp-substrate application this remains the specified choice.
