About Sika Sika® ViscoCrete®-20 HE
Sika ViscoCrete-20 HE is the workhorse third-generation superplasticiser in Sika’s Indian admixture range, built on modified polycarboxylate ether (PCE) chemistry rather than the older sulphonated naphthalene or melamine formaldehyde technology that dominated the Indian market for two decades. Where SNF-based plasticisers rely on electrostatic repulsion alone to keep cement particles apart, the PCE backbone in ViscoCrete-20 HE combines electrostatic dispersion with steric hindrance — long side chains physically hold particles apart even as the electrostatic charge dissipates during hydration. That is the mechanical reason it holds workability longer and reduces water so aggressively without the retardation problems that plagued first-generation plasticisers.
For a Delhi NCR or Pan-India RMC plant, precaster, or contractor, the “HE” (high early) designation is the operative word. This is not a general-purpose water reducer; it is formulated specifically to pull forward early-age strength gain, which matters when formwork turnaround, precast demoulding cycles, or winter curing in North Indian sites is the bottleneck rather than 28-day design strength. Space Arc Engineering supplies it ex-stock in 255 kg drums with bulk tanker options for larger RMC plants, and our technical team runs trial batches on client-specific cement and aggregate combinations before full-scale dosing — PCE performance is sensitive to cement C3A content and alkali levels, so a trial is not optional on a new source of cement.
The technical insight
The performance gap between ViscoCrete-20 HE and legacy SNF-based superplasticisers comes down to dispersion mechanism, not just dosage. SNF polymers disperse cement particles purely through electrostatic repulsion — the charge on the polymer backbone pushes particles apart, but that charge gets progressively neutralised as hydration products form, which is why SNF-plasticised concrete loses slump faster. The PCE backbone in ViscoCrete-20 HE adds steric hindrance: comb-shaped side chains physically hold particles apart independent of surface charge, so dispersion persists longer into the hydration process even as electrostatic effects fade. The “HE” tuning goes a step further by adjusting the side-chain density and length specifically to accelerate C-S-H gel formation in the first hours, pulling forward strength gain rather than just extending workability. This is also why cement compatibility matters more with this product than with older admixtures — the polymer’s interaction with C3A and alkali sulphates in the cement directly governs how much of that steric effect is actually realised on a given site’s cement source, which is the technical reason behind the trial-batch recommendation rather than just a boilerplate caution.
Where it is used
- Ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants producing high-strength or fast-turnaround mixes
- Precast concrete elements requiring rapid demoulding and early handling strength
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) in congested reinforcement zones such as basements and shear walls
- Fast-track construction where formwork cycle time drives project schedule
- High-rise structural concrete requiring pumpability over long vertical or horizontal distances
- Pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete elements where chloride-free admixtures are mandatory
- Mass and structural concrete needing improved cohesion and reduced permeability for durability
- Winter concreting in North India where early strength gain offsets slower ambient curing
Key advantages
- Third-generation PCE chemistry gives markedly higher water reduction than SNF/lignosulphonate plasticisers at comparable dosage, directly lifting compressive strength at a fixed w/c ratio
- Pronounced early-strength gain (the ‘HE’ designation) shortens formwork-removal and precast demoulding cycles versus standard ViscoCrete grades
- Chloride-free formulation makes it safe for reinforced and pre-stressed concrete without risking chloride-induced corrosion
- Wide dosage window (0.2-2.0% by cement weight) lets one product serve both moderate-workability RMC mixes and high-flow/self-compacting concrete
- Reduced permeability and improved surface finish translate into fewer honeycombing and rework issues on exposed concrete
- CE-marked to EN 934-2 and tested to ASTM C494 and IS 9103, giving specifiers a paper trail for QA/QC audits and government tenders
- Compatible with most Indian OPC 43/53 grade and PPC cements, though performance still varies by C3A and alkali content, so trial batching is recommended
- Long-standing Sika manufacturing and distribution presence in India means consistent batch-to-batch quality versus some unbranded PCE admixtures in the market
Limitations & considerations
- Performance is sensitive to cement chemistry (C3A content, alkali level, fineness); switching cement brands or sources without a fresh trial batch can change workability and setting behaviour
- Not interchangeable with standard Sika ViscoCrete-20 (non-HE) or other ViscoCrete grades without re-validating dosage on the actual mix
- Higher cost per litre than older SNF or lignosulphonate-based plasticisers, which matters on price-sensitive, non-critical applications
- Must never be added to dry cement or batched without adequate wet mixing time, or dispersion and workability will be inconsistent
- Overdosing can cause excessive retardation or segregation, so dosage should be trial-verified rather than assumed from the data sheet range alone
- Requires sealed storage between 10-40°C and has a 12-month shelf life; long-stored or improperly stored drums need re-homogenisation before use
Selection & best practice
Always add ViscoCrete-20 HE to the gauging water or dose it directly into the mixer with the wet materials — never onto dry cement, which causes uneven dispersion and inconsistent workability. Run a minimum 60-second wet mixing time per cubic metre after dosing to let the PCE polymer fully deploy; shorter mixing is the single most common cause of “the admixture isn’t working” complaints on Indian sites. Because PCE dispersion is highly sensitive to cement chemistry (C3A content, alkali level, fineness) and to ambient temperature, always run a trial mix with the actual site cement, sand, and aggregate before finalising dosage for a new source or a new season — a dosage that worked on one cement brand’s OPC 53 can behave differently on another brand’s PPC. Store drums between 10°C and 40°C, keep them sealed, and use within the 12-month shelf life; settlement after prolonged storage is normal and product should be re-homogenised by gentle agitation before use, not discarded.

Industry use cases
RMC / Ready-Mix Concrete
Delhi NCR RMC plants use it to hit M30-M50 design strengths at reduced water-cement ratio while keeping pump-friendly flow for high-rise vertical delivery.
Precast Concrete
Precast yards dose it to accelerate early strength gain, enabling same-day or next-day demoulding cycles that keep formwork utilisation high.
Self-Compacting Concrete
Used at the higher dosage band to achieve SCC flow characteristics in congested rebar zones like basement raft foundations and shear walls without segregation.
Infrastructure / Fast-Track Projects
Metro, flyover, and bridge segment casting yards specify it where formwork cycle time is the critical path driver on project schedule.
Pre-stressed Concrete
Chloride-free formulation makes it the compliant choice for post-tensioned girders and pre-stressed elements where tendon corrosion risk rules out chloride-bearing admixtures.

How we position Sika Sika® ViscoCrete®-20 HE
Within Sika’s own admixture family, ViscoCrete-20 HE sits alongside the standard ViscoCrete-20 (workability retention focus) and other ViscoCrete grades tuned for self-compacting concrete or extended slump life — Space Arc’s technical team can help match the right grade to whether a site’s priority is workability retention, early strength, or flow characteristics. Against third-party alternatives, the genuine comparison in the Indian market is Fosroc’s Conplast SP430 (SNF chemistry) — a credible, widely used alternative where budget or an already-validated SNF mix design outweighs the higher water reduction and early-strength benefits of PCE technology. Unbranded or regional PCE admixtures also compete on price but rarely carry the same CE/EN 934-2, IS 9103, and ASTM C494 documentation trail that specifiers need for RERA and government tender compliance.
Fosroc Conplast SP430 — Specifiers on tighter budgets or working with cement sources where SNF chemistry is already validated and proven may prefer Conplast SP430’s sulphonated naphthalene formulation over PCE, though it typically needs higher dosage for comparable water reduction and offers less workability retention than ViscoCrete-20 HE.
