STP SuperKarGard BT
STP’s asphalt-based anti-corrosive underbody coating — tough, fast-drying protection for automobile chassis, mudguards and exposed MS fabrication.
What is it?
A black, asphalt (bitumen) based anti-corrosive coating from STP that dries to a tough, continuous, water-resistant film — formulated primarily as an underbody protection compound for automobiles.
Where is it used?
Automobile chassis, mudguards and undercarriages; also brushed onto MS gates, angle-iron frames, tractor trolleys and other ferrous fabrication exposed to monsoon splash and road grime.
Why use it?
Blocks moisture and road salt from reaching bare steel, dries tack-free in about 30 minutes, resists corrosion, abrasion, acid and alkali, and won’t sag off vertical surfaces even in a thick coat.
How is it applied?
De-rust and degrease the surface, let it dry, then brush or spray two coats of SuperKarGard BT — the second 4–5 hours after the first — building up to roughly 100 microns DFT.
About STP SuperKarGard BT
SuperKarGard BT sits a little apart from the waterproofing membranes and grouts that dominate STP Limited’s catalogue. It’s an asphalt (bitumen) based anti-corrosive coating engineered specifically as an underbody protectant for automobiles — the black, semi-viscous compound sprayed onto the underside of trucks, tractors and cars to shield the chassis, mudguards and undercarriage from road grime, monsoon splash and salt. STP has been making bituminous compounds for close to nine decades, and SuperKarGard BT draws on the same basic bitumen chemistry as the company’s PipeWrap tapes and TankMastic coatings, reformulated to a brushable or sprayable consistency with fast tack-free drying and a high solids content (min. 70%) so it builds real film thickness without sagging.
At Space Arc we move SuperKarGard BT for two buyer groups mainly: automobile body shops and fleet workshops doing seasonal underbody rust-proofing, and site fabricators who want an economical bituminous coat for MS gates, water-tank stands, angle-iron frames and similar ferrous work that’s exposed to weather but doesn’t need a decorative finish. It isn’t a substitute for epoxy or polyurethane protective coatings on structural steel where appearance, UV stability or higher film performance matter — for that, look at STP’s own ShaliProtek range or a comparable Fosroc system.
The technical insight
The protection mechanism is straightforward bitumen physics: asphalt is inherently hydrophobic and largely inert to dilute acids, alkalis and de-icing salts, so a continuous ~100-micron dry film simply keeps moisture and electrolytes off the steel, interrupting the corrosion cell before it starts. Because the film stays flexible rather than curing hard like an epoxy, it also absorbs minor stone-chip impact and chassis flex without cracking — the reason underbody coatings are formulated as bituminous compounds rather than rigid paint systems in the first place. The trade-off is the one you accept with any bitumen coating: it softens in sustained high heat, offers no UV resistance for visible surfaces, and has little abrasion life once the film is physically broken.
Where it is used
- Underbody rust-proofing for cars, SUVs, pick-ups and light commercial vehicles
- Chassis, mudguard and wheel-arch protection on vehicles before dispatch
- Tractor and farm-trolley undercarriage coating
- Truck and trailer frame protection for fleet operators
- MS gates, grills and angle-iron site fabrication needing an economical anti-rust coat
- Water-tank support stands, brackets and embedded ferrous fixtures exposed to weather
- General workshop touch-up coating for ferrous parts stored or used outdoors
Key advantages
- Forms a continuous, water-resistant bituminous film that blocks the corrosion cell at the steel surface
- Tack-free in about 30 minutes; full 24-hour cure lets the job move same day
- High solids content (min. 70%) builds real film thickness in just two coats
- Flexible film resists sagging on vertical surfaces and absorbs minor vibration or impact
- Simple brush or spray-gun application — no specialised spraying equipment required
- Resists corrosion, abrasion, acids and alkalis in normal service conditions
- Priced well below epoxy or PU anti-corrosive coating systems
- Stocked from 1 kg workshop packs up to 200 kg drums for bulk fabrication work
Limitations & considerations
- Black bituminous finish only — no UV resistance or colour options, so not suited to visible or decorative steelwork
- Softens under sustained high heat and is inflammable; keep away from flame and welding sparks during storage and use
- Not engineered as a structural protective-coating system — where appearance or higher mechanical/UV performance is needed, an epoxy or PU coating is the better fit
- No meaningful abrasion resistance once the film is broken by direct wheel, gravel or tool contact
- Solvent-based product — apply with adequate ventilation and allow off-gassing before enclosed storage
- STP’s data sheet doesn’t cite an IS/ASTM performance standard, so specify it on the stated technical properties rather than a code reference for institutional work
Selection & best practice
Always wire-brush back to clean, dry bare metal and degrease before coating — SuperKarGard BT bonds to sound steel, not to loose rust, oil or old flaking paint. Apply the first coat in a thin, even pass rather than one heavy flood coat, let it go tack-free (about 30 minutes), then apply the second coat 4–5 hours later. Give the full 24 hours before the vehicle returns to service or dust is allowed to settle on the film, and in Delhi NCR’s summer heat, apply early morning or evening — high ambient temperature thins the coating and can cause runs on vertical chassis members.

How we position STP SuperKarGard BT
Within STP’s own range, SuperKarGard BT is the light-fabrication and automotive end of a larger bituminous protective-coatings family — ShaliProtek HR BT 100/200/300 and TankMastic are the engineered options for ductile-iron pipe, tanks and heavier structural steel, and PipeWrap BT is the tape-wrap alternative for buried pipework. If a job needs a coloured, UV-stable, higher-build protective coating on exposed structural steel rather than a black bituminous film, that’s outside what SuperKarGard BT is built for — Fosroc’s protective and anti-corrosion coatings range is worth comparing on those specifications.
