What is it?

A naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) based liquid admixture from STP Ltd — formerly ShaliCon 537 — that combines high-range water reduction with controlled set retardation, conforming to IS 9103 and ASTM C494 Type G.

Where is it used?

Ready-mix and pumped concrete, hot-weather pours, heavily reinforced sections, large rafts and slabs, high-performance mixes and precast slab work where slump must survive the journey to the point of placement.

Why use it?

One admixture handles two problems at once: it cuts mixing water for a denser, stronger, less permeable concrete, and it deliberately slows the set so workability holds through transit delays and high ambient temperatures.

How is it applied?

Dispensed into the final portion of mixing water at 0.5–2.0% by weight of cement, never onto dry cement. The exact dose is fixed by site trials against the slump retention and set retardation the pour actually needs.

About STP ShaliPlast SP

Anyone who has batched concrete in a North Indian summer knows the arithmetic: a mix that leaves the plant at 150 mm slump can arrive at the pump almost unplaceable after an hour in traffic. ShaliPlast SP from STP Ltd is built for exactly that gap between batching and placing. It is a high-range water reducer with a deliberate retarding action — a Type G admixture under ASTM C494, also meeting IS 9103 — so the same dose that strips excess water out of the mix also buys the site crew extra working time before initial set.

The product is based on sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde chemistry, supplied as an amber-brown liquid with a specific gravity of 1.20 ± 0.03 and nil chloride content, making it safe around reinforcement. It works with all types of Portland cement, including sulphate-resisting cement, and suits everything from RMC and pumpable mixes to heavily reinforced members and precast slabs. For contractors already familiar with SNF economics, it remains one of the most cost-sensible routes to flowing, cohesive concrete on Indian sites. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine STP material with TDS documentation and trial-mix guidance across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

Cement grains in fresh concrete clump into flocs that trap water, which is why plain mixes need more water than hydration actually requires. The sulphonated naphthalene polymer in ShaliPlast SP adsorbs onto those grains and gives each one a like negative charge; electrostatic repulsion breaks the flocs apart and releases the trapped water as free lubricant. You can bank that gain either way — hold the slump and remove water for higher strength and lower permeability, or hold the water and get flowing concrete. The retarding component then slows early cement hydration, delaying initial set in a controlled manner so slump loss is postponed rather than merely masked. That second mechanism is also the one to respect: because retardation is dose-dependent, overdosing shows up as bleeding or a set delay longer than the programme wants, which is why STP insists dosage be fixed by site trials.

Where it is used

  • Ready-mix concrete travelling long lead distances from plant to site
  • Hot-weather concreting where slump loss and premature stiffening are the norm
  • Large rafts, mass foundations and slab pours where cold joints must be avoided
  • Pumpable concrete, including long horizontal runs and high-rise vertical pumping
  • Heavily reinforced beams, columns and junctions with congested steel
  • High-performance and high-strength concrete at reduced water-cement ratios
  • Flowing concrete for slender members and complex formwork profiles
  • Precast slab production where a fluid, cohesive mix speeds up casting

Key advantages

  • Dual Type G action — high-range water reduction and set retardation from a single admixture
  • Long workability retention lets concrete be hauled to distant pours without retempering
  • Lower water content produces denser concrete with reduced cracking and permeability
  • Improves cohesion, cutting segregation and bleeding in the plastic mix
  • Nil chloride content — no contribution to reinforcement corrosion risk
  • Compatible with all Portland cements, including sulphate-resisting cement (SRC)
  • Faster, easier placement and compaction reduces pour time and labour cost
  • Proven SNF chemistry at a more economical price point than PCE systems

Limitations & considerations

  • Dose-sensitive: overdosing causes bleeding or extended setting time, so site trials are mandatory before production use
  • Not compatible with high-alumina cement
  • Built-in retardation can work against you in cold weather or fast-cycle precast work where early strength drives the programme
  • For self-compacting concrete or very low water-cement ratios, PCE-based options such as ShaliPlast PCE 300-VM are the better tool
  • Shelf life is 9 months in sealed drums, stored cool, under shed and away from heat
  • Must be added through the mixing water — direct contact with dry cement affects performance

Selection & best practice

Run trial mixes first: start within the 0.5–2.0% by weight of cement band and adjust until you hit the slump retention and set retardation the pour schedule needs at the actual ambient temperature — retardation stretches in cool weather and shortens in heat. At the batching stage, charge aggregates and cement into the mixer with roughly 70% of the mixing water and mix for three minutes, then add the remaining water carrying the ShaliPlast SP dose and mix a further three minutes. Never let the admixture touch dry cement. Because the flowing mix behaves almost like a liquid during its working window, formwork for walls and narrow sections must be watertight, well braced and designed for higher pressure at the base than conventional concrete would apply; slab formwork needs no change. Keep drums sealed and shaded on site, and confirm blended-cement (PPC/PSC) compatibility through the same trial routine.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mix Concrete

RMC plants serving Delhi NCR and other metro markets use ShaliPlast SP to hold slump through unpredictable haul times, so transit mixers arrive with placeable concrete instead of a retempering argument.

Infrastructure

Flyovers, metro structures and bridge works rely on its retardation for staged mass pours without cold joints, and on its water reduction for the dense, low-permeability concrete durability specs demand.

High-Rise Construction

Tower projects pump cohesive, flowing concrete to height in summer conditions, with reduced segregation through congested column and shear-wall reinforcement.

Precast Yards

Slab and element casting benefits from fluid mixes that fill moulds quickly with less compaction effort — where cycle times allow for the retarded set.

Industrial Projects

Large factory rafts and machine foundations use the extended working window to place big continuous volumes with a single crew and pump set-up.

Frequently asked questions

What dosage of ShaliPlast SP should I start with?
Begin trial mixes inside the 0.5–2.0% by weight of cement range recommended by STP. The working dose depends on cement type, ambient temperature and how much retardation your pour plan needs, so lock it with site trials rather than a paper assumption.
How is this different from a normal superplasticizer?
A standard high-range water reducer (ASTM C494 Type F) only fluidifies the mix. ShaliPlast SP is Type G — it adds deliberate set retardation, so slump survives long transit and hot weather instead of collapsing within the first hour.
Will the retardation delay my deshuttering or strength gain?
Initial set is postponed by design, so early-age strength timing shifts accordingly — plan stripping times around your trial results, especially in winter. At the correct dose, 28-day strengths are typically higher than the plain mix because of the water reduction.
Is it safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete?
Yes. The chloride content is nil, so it adds no corrosion risk to embedded steel — one of the reasons it complies with IS 9103.
Which cements does it work with?
All types of Portland cement including sulphate-resisting cement. It is not compatible with high-alumina cement, and blended cements (PPC/PSC) should be confirmed through trial mixes.
What pack sizes are available and how long does it keep?
Space Arc supplies ShaliPlast SP in 20 kg and 200 kg drums. Shelf life is 9 months in original sealed condition when stored in a cool, dry, shaded place away from heat.

How we position STP ShaliPlast SP

ShaliPlast SP sits in the workhorse slot of STP’s admixture range: SNF economics with the added retardation that Indian haul distances and summers demand. Where the job outgrows it, stay in the family — ShaliPlast PCE 300-VM for self-compacting concrete and very low water-cement ratios where slump retention and viscosity control matter more, ShaliPlast SP PQC for pavement-quality concrete, and ShaliPlast CI where a corrosion-inhibiting admixture is specified. Among our other brands, Fosroc Conplast SP430 is the closest SNF peer for specifiers standardised on Fosroc documentation. Space Arc can run comparative trial mixes so the choice is made on data, not brochure copy.
