STP ShaliTex Primer WB
A zero-VOC, water-based bituminous primer that seals concrete pores and builds a reliable bond bed for APP torch-applied and self-adhesive membranes.
What is it?
A water-based modified bituminous primer from STP Limited, formulated to seal surface pores in concrete and masonry and to raise the peel bond of APP and self-adhesive waterproofing membranes.
Where is it used?
Roof slabs, podiums, basements, wet areas, canal-lining joints and concrete floor joints, wherever a bituminous membrane or sealing compound is to be laid.
Why use it?
It is zero-VOC and non-flammable, so it can be used in enclosed and occupied spaces without the odour, fire risk or ventilation constraints of solvent-cut-back primers.
How is it applied?
Stir, let entrapped air escape, then apply one even coat by brush or spray gun at 0.30-0.60 L/m2 and allow 2-4 hours to dry tack-free before laying the membrane.
About STP ShaliTex Primer WB
STP ShaliTex Primer WB is the water-based member of STP Limited’s bituminous priming range, engineered specifically as the tie-coat between a concrete deck and an APP-modified bitumen membrane. Where a torch-on or self-adhesive membrane meets bare concrete, the two surfaces rarely bond well on their own: cementitious substrates are porous, dusty and chemically dissimilar to bitumen. This primer bridges that gap. It soaks into the open pores of the slab, binds surface fines, and leaves behind a thin bituminous film that the membrane’s own bitumen readily fuses with, so the finished waterproofing acts as one continuous, fully adhered layer rather than a sheet loosely floating over the structure.
What sets the WB grade apart from conventional cut-back primers is its chemistry. Instead of dissolving the bitumen in a volatile solvent, ShaliTex Primer WB carries modified bitumen in a water emulsion. That single change removes the solvent odour, the flammability and the VOC load, which matters a great deal on Indian sites where basements, lift pits, water tanks and occupied buildings often have no practical way to ventilate solvent fumes. It arrives ready to use, needs no thinning, and dries fast enough to keep a waterproofing crew moving through the day rather than waiting on a smelly, slow-drying coat.
The technical insight
The performance of any membrane system is decided at the primer line, not on the sheet. A concrete surface is a network of capillaries and micro-voids; if a membrane is laid straight onto it, air and moisture trapped in those voids expand under the torch flame or under summer heat and push the sheet off the deck, showing up later as blisters and edge peel. ShaliTex Primer WB works by penetrating and sealing that pore network first. As the water phase evaporates, the emulsified bitumen particles coalesce into a continuous brown-to-black film keyed into the substrate, locking down dust and laitance that would otherwise act as a bond-breaker. Because that film is itself bitumen, it is chemically identical to the membrane’s compound, so when the APP sheet is torched or pressed down the two bituminous layers wet into each other and cure as one mass, giving the high peel strength the system was designed for. The >50% solid content means enough binder is deposited in a single coat to seal the surface, while the water carrier keeps the film free of the solvent residue that can otherwise soften a membrane’s underside. This is also why the 2-4 hour tack-free window must be respected: apply the membrane too early and the trapped water flashes into vapour under heat; wait far too long on a dusty site and fresh contamination settles on the film.
Where it is used
- Priming concrete roof slabs and podium decks before laying APP torch-applied membranes
- Preparing basement rafts, retaining walls and lift-pit surfaces ahead of self-adhesive or torch-on membrane
- Priming wet-area and water-tank substrates where solvent odour cannot be tolerated
- Sealing porous masonry and screed surfaces prior to bituminous waterproofing
- Tie-coat for self-adhesive membranes that rely on primed, dust-free substrates to develop peel bond
- Priming canal-lining joints before pouring bituminous sealing compound
- Priming concrete floor joints ahead of hot or cold bitumen sealant placement
- Re-priming and bonding onto sound old bituminous surfaces during re-waterproofing works
Key advantages
- Zero-VOC, water-based formulation safe for basements, tanks and occupied interiors
- Non-flammable, so no hot-work or fire-watch constraints during priming
- Ready to use straight from the pack with no solvent thinning or field mixing
- Fast drying, typically tack-free in 2-4 hours depending on ambient temperature
- Penetrates and seals concrete pores, binding dust and laitance into the film
- Chemically compatible bitumen film that fuses with APP and self-adhesive membranes
- Bonds readily onto sound existing bituminous surfaces for re-waterproofing
- Low-odour application improves site conditions and worker comfort in confined areas
Limitations & considerations
- Water-based, so it must not be applied below 5 C or during foggy, high-humidity conditions where the film cannot dry
- Designed for bituminous membrane systems, not as a primer under liquid PU, acrylic or epoxy coatings
- Requires a fully dry, tack-free film before the membrane goes down, which lengthens on cool or damp days
- Not a waterproofing layer in itself; it only prepares and bonds and must always be over-laid
- Substrate must be sound, clean and free of standing water, oil and grease, or bond will fail
- Available only in a 20 L pack, so very large decks need careful stock planning
Selection & best practice
Start with a sound, dry surface: remove loose gravel, dirt, oil and grease with a jet of dry air, and grind or mechanically clean the concrete smooth so no laitance or curing-compound skin remains. Stir the primer thoroughly with a slow-speed paddle mixer, then let it stand a moment so entrapped air escapes before you draw material. Apply a single even coat by brush or spray gun at roughly 0.30-0.60 L/m2, adjusting toward the higher rate on rough or very porous surfaces. Do not flood low spots or leave puddles. Allow 2-4 hours for the coat to dry tack-free before laying the membrane, and plan the day so the primed area is over-laid the same day rather than left exposed to fresh dust. Avoid priming when the temperature is below 5 C or during foggy or high-humidity spells, since a water-based film will not coalesce properly. Keep unused product in its airtight pack under shade, and wear gloves and eye protection during handling.

Industry use cases
High-rise & Residential Roofing
Priming exposed RCC roof slabs and terraces before APP torch-applied membranes, giving builders a fully adhered system that resists blistering under summer heat.
Basements & Below-Grade
Zero-VOC priming of rafts, retaining walls and lift pits where solvent fumes cannot be ventilated, ahead of self-adhesive or torch-on membrane waterproofing.
Water Retaining Structures
Preparing tank and reservoir concrete for bituminous membrane lining without introducing solvent odour into confined, later water-holding spaces.

How we position STP ShaliTex Primer WB
ShaliTex Primer WB is the water-based, low-odour choice within STP’s bituminous priming line, best suited to APP torch-applied and self-adhesive membrane systems in enclosed or occupied spaces. Where solvent odour and drying speed are not a concern, STP’s solvent-based ShaliTex Primer offers a fast cut-back alternative; the membrane itself would be STP’s SuperThermoLay or ShaliPlus APP range, with ShaliSeal HB and ShaliKote available for sealing and protective duties. Space Arc also stocks equivalent systems across brands, including Fosroc’s membrane-priming line, so specifiers can standardise on a single manufacturer’s primer-plus-membrane build rather than mixing brands across the bond line.
Fosroc Nitoproof WB Primer — Choose the Fosroc option when the project is already specified on a Fosroc liquid-applied or membrane waterproofing system and you want the primer and membrane to come from one manufacturer’s warranty chain.
