STP ShaliRustOff
A chloride- and sulphate-free liquid rust remover that chemically strips corrosion from steel and reinforcement, leaving a clean, coating-ready surface without residual salts.
What is it?
An acidic, chloride- and sulphate-free liquid rust remover from STP Limited that dissolves rust off steel structures, tanks, pipelines and exposed reinforcement bars.
Where is it used?
On rusted steel structures, water pipelines, shuttering plates, tanks and corroded rebar exposed during concrete repair and rehabilitation work.
Why use it?
It leaves no chloride or sulphate residue behind, so no fresh corrosion initiators are trapped under the primer or repair mortar you apply next.
How is it applied?
Brush or swab a coat onto rusted steel, leave it 15 to 30 minutes until the surface turns back to blackish steel, scrub off the loosened rust, then rinse thoroughly before coating.
About STP ShaliRustOff
STP ShaliRustOff is a purpose-built liquid rust remover for situations where mechanical cleaning alone cannot reach every corroded surface. It is an acidic formulation that reacts with iron oxide to break the bond between rust and the parent steel, so the corrosion can be wiped or scrubbed away instead of ground off. What sets it apart on a specification is what it deliberately leaves out: it carries no chloride and no sulphate content. Those two ions are the classic hidden culprits behind premature coating failure and re-corrosion, and a rust remover that introduces them simply relocates the problem. ShaliRustOff removes the rust without seeding the surface with fresh corrosion initiators, which is exactly what a durability-conscious repair calls for.
For contractors and consultants working on concrete repair and rehabilitation, the product fits naturally into the sequence after breakout and before priming. When reinforcement is exposed during a repair, the loose scale is knocked back mechanically and ShaliRustOff cleans up the residual film that a wire brush leaves behind. Because it works chemically, it reaches into pitted areas, threads, welds and tight corners that abrasive tools miss. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliRustOff as an authorised STP distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and can advise on where a chemical remover is appropriate and where blasting or grinding remains the better call.
The technical insight
Rust is hydrated iron oxide, and it clings to steel as a porous, poorly bonded scale. ShaliRustOff is an acidic liquid that reacts with that oxide layer, loosening its grip so it lifts as a spent film rather than needing to be abraded away. The visual cue on site is straightforward: within the 15 to 30 minute dwell, a red-brown rusted surface reverts to its original blackish steel colour, telling the applicator the reaction has done its work. The design intent behind the chloride- and sulphate-free chemistry is corrosion science. Chlorides and sulphates are aggressive, mobile ions that keep steel corroding even under a fresh coating, so a remover that contained them would defeat the purpose of the repair. By excluding them, STP ensures nothing is left on the metal that would restart the corrosion cell. The trade-off is that the formulation is acidic, so every trace must be neutralised and washed off with a clean water jet before any primer or coating goes on. That rinsing step is not optional housekeeping. It is what converts a chemically cleaned surface into a sound, inert substrate ready to bond with the protective system.
Where it is used
- Removing rust from structural steel, columns and beams before protective painting
- Cleaning corroded reinforcement bars exposed during concrete repair and rehabilitation
- Descaling steel and RCC water tanks prior to lining or waterproofing
- Treating internal and external rust on steel water pipelines before coating
- Reclaiming rusted shuttering and formwork plates to extend their working life
- Rust removal from plant, equipment and machinery steelwork during maintenance
- Preparing welds, joints, threads and pitted areas that abrasive tools cannot reach
- Spot-treating residual rust film left behind after wire brushing or grinding
Key advantages
- Chloride and sulphate free, so no corrosion-initiating salts are left on the steel
- Removes rust from difficult-to-reach corners, pits, welds and threaded sections that grinding misses
- Simple, economical brush or swab application with no specialist equipment
- Clear visual endpoint: the surface reverts to blackish steel when the rust is gone
- Reduces reliance on dusty, labour-intensive mechanical abrasion
- Light pink liquid that is easy to see going on, so coverage gaps are obvious
- Supplied in 1 kg and 5 kg packs, suiting both spot repairs and larger areas
- Backed by Space Arc technical support and pan-India supply as an authorised STP distributor
Limitations & considerations
- Acidic in nature, so every trace must be washed off with a clean water jet before priming or coating
- Not to be applied to clean rusted rebars in critical RCC structures, where acid contact with sound steel is a risk
- Heavy rust scale must still be knocked back mechanically first; it is a finisher, not a substitute for breakout
- Requires a substrate temperature between 5 degrees C and 40 degrees C for reliable reaction
- Needs adequate ventilation and full PPE because of skin, eye and inhalation hazards
- A second coat on a bone-dry first coat may be needed where stubborn rust remains
Selection & best practice
Start by removing dust, flakes and loose scale with dry air, then take the bulk of the rust off with a wire brush, chipping or grinding so the surface is as clean as mechanical means allow. Confirm the substrate temperature sits between 5 and 40 degrees C. Stir the material with a slow-speed paddle for a homogenous mix and let it settle so entrapped air escapes. Apply a coat with a cotton-waste swab or brush and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes, watching for the tell-tale change back to blackish steel. Scrub or dust off the loosened rust; if any remains, apply a second coat over a bone-dry first coat. Because the product is acidic, the rinse is critical: flush the surface with a clean water jet until all acid traces are gone before you prime. Never apply it to clean, sound rebar in critical RCC members. Move to your STP primer promptly once the steel is dry to avoid flash rusting.

How we position STP ShaliRustOff
ShaliRustOff sits at the surface-preparation stage of the STP repair and protection range, and it pairs naturally with STP reinforcement primers such as ShaliPrime ZnR and epoxy protective coatings that follow rust removal. For full concrete repair systems it works alongside STP polymer-modified repair mortars once the cleaned steel is primed. Where a project standardises on Fosroc, the Reebaklens acid-based cleaner and etchant covers similar rust and mill-scale removal alongside its concrete etching role, and our Dr. Fixit and Sika ranges offer parallel rebar treatment and anti-corrosion options. Space Arc can specify the right combination across all these brands.
Fosroc Reebaklens — A specifier standardising on Fosroc might choose Reebaklens where a single acid-based product needs to both remove rust and mill scale from steel and etch or clean adjacent concrete surfaces in the same operation.
