BrandSTPCategoryConcrete AdmixturesFormA pale-amber, water-based emulsified concentrate from STP that dilutes with water into a chemically-reactive mould…

What is it?

A pale-amber, water-based emulsified concentrate from STP that dilutes with water into a chemically-reactive mould release liquid for concrete formwork.

Where is it used?

Cast-in-situ and precast concrete work — column, beam and slab shutters, precast beds, tunnel and bridge formwork on plywood, steel and GRP moulds.

Why use it?

It releases concrete by chemical reaction rather than an oil film, so faces come away clean without the oil staining, bug-holing and slippery over-application of neat shuttering oils.

How is it applied?

Dilute the concentrate with clean water as directed, then spray or wipe a thin, even film onto clean formwork before pouring — no puddling.

About STP ShaliSlip WB

STP’s ShaliSlip WB (previously sold as ShaliSlip Emulsion) is a water-based, emulsified concentrated chemical mould release agent supplied as a pale-amber liquid that turns milky-white the moment it is diluted with water. It is used on the release face of concrete formwork so that, once the concrete has hardened, the shutter strips away cleanly and the cast face is left sound and free of surface defects. Because it is a concentrate that is thinned on site with water, one drum treats a large area, which keeps the applied cost per square metre of formwork low compared with using neat oil straight from the tin.

For engineers and site teams in Delhi NCR and across India, the appeal of ShaliSlip WB is that it behaves like a modern release chemistry rather than a lubricant. Conventional shuttering oils work by leaving an oily barrier between the mould and the concrete; get the dosage wrong and you are left with oil-stained, patchy, dust-attracting concrete faces that are hard to paint or plaster over. ShaliSlip WB instead reacts with the concrete to do its job, so a correctly applied thin film gives you a repeatable, cleaner result shutter after shutter. As a water-based, low-VOC product it is also easier to handle in enclosed precast sheds and on sites where solvent odour and fire risk are a concern.

The technical insight

The mechanism is what separates a chemical release agent from a plain shuttering oil. Once ShaliSlip WB is diluted and applied to the mould, it reacts with the free alkali (calcium hydroxide and related hydroxides) present in fresh concrete at the concrete–formwork interface. That reaction forms a very thin, water-repellent film right at the contact face. This film is what prevents the cement paste from bonding to the shutter, so when the formwork is struck the concrete releases along a clean parting plane instead of tearing or leaving skin behind on the mould. Because the release is chemical and the applied film is thin, you avoid the two classic failures of over-oiled formwork: brown oil staining that bleeds into the finished face, and trapped air that leaves blowholes. It is a genuine emulsion, so it wets plywood, steel and GRP moulds evenly, and the water carrier flashes off to leave only the working film behind before the pour.

Where it is used

  • Release coating on plywood and film-faced ply shutters for columns, beams and slabs
  • Steel formwork and steel shutter panels in cast-in-situ RCC work
  • GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) moulds for architectural and repetitive precast units
  • Precast concrete beds, elements and factory moulds requiring clean demoulding
  • Tunnel-form and bridge-deck formwork release
  • Water-retaining and enclosed structures where a low-VOC, water-based agent is preferred
  • Fair-face and exposed concrete where an oil-free, stain-free finish is specified
  • High-reuse formwork systems where a chemically clean parting line protects the mould

Key advantages

  • Chemical release action gives clean stripping and a sound, defect-free concrete face
  • No oil staining or greasy residue transferred to the cast surface
  • Water-based and low-VOC — safer for enclosed precast sheds and reduced fire/odour risk
  • Supplied as a concentrate, so the applied cost per square metre of formwork is economical
  • Works across mixed formwork stock — plywood, steel and GRP — from one product
  • Thin working film reduces blowholes and bug-holing versus over-applied neat oil
  • Easier clean-up and less slippery underfoot than solvent or oil-based agents
  • Concrete face left ready to receive plaster, paint or coatings without heavy pre-treatment

Limitations & considerations

  • Must be diluted with clean water to the manufacturer’s ratio — using it neat or over-diluted defeats the release action
  • It is a release agent, not a curing compound or waterproofer; it protects the mould face, not the finished concrete
  • Over-application leaves puddles that can retard the surface or mar the finish — a thin, even film is essential
  • Being water-based, the applied film can be washed off by rain or standing water before the pour and may need re-coating
  • Formwork must be clean and free of old hardened concrete and rust for the chemical film to form properly
  • Effectiveness and dosage depend on mould type and mix; always follow the current STP TDS rather than a fixed rule of thumb

Selection & best practice

Start with clean formwork — remove all set concrete, laitance, dust and rust, because the release film only forms correctly on a clean surface. Dilute ShaliSlip WB with clean water strictly to the ratio and coverage given in STP’s current technical data sheet; do not guess, and do not apply it neat. Mix the emulsion well, then apply a thin, uniform film by spray, roller or clean cloth, working it into corners and avoiding puddles or runs. Let the water carrier flash off so only the working film remains before you pour. On absorbent or first-use plywood you may need a second light coat. Protect coated shutters from rain and standing water, and re-coat if the film has been washed off or if shutters have been stored a long time. Keep the concentrate sealed, stored cool and away from frost, and use consistent dilution across a job so the concrete finish stays uniform pour to pour.

Frequently asked questions

Is ShaliSlip WB an oil or a chemical release agent?
It is a chemical release agent, not a shuttering oil. Diluted and applied to the mould, it reacts with the alkali in fresh concrete to form a thin water-repellent film that lets the concrete strip cleanly — so you avoid the oil staining and greasy residue you get from neat oils.
Do I need to dilute it before use?
Yes. ShaliSlip WB is supplied as a concentrate and must be diluted with clean water to the ratio given in STP’s current technical data sheet. Using it neat or over-diluting it will compromise the release action, so follow the TDS rather than a fixed rule of thumb.
Which formwork can I use it on?
It works across plywood and film-faced ply, steel and GRP moulds, which makes it convenient for sites running mixed formwork stock. The shutter must be clean and free of old concrete and rust for the release film to form properly.
Will it stain or discolour the concrete face?
No — that is one of its main advantages over neat shuttering oils. Applied as a thin, even film it leaves the cast face clean and free of oil staining, so it is well suited to fair-face and to-be-painted or plastered surfaces.
How is it different from the solvent-based ShaliSlip SB?
ShaliSlip WB is water-based and low-VOC, which suits enclosed precast sheds and jobs where solvent odour or fire risk is a concern. ShaliSlip SB is the solvent-based variant in the same family, chosen where a fast-evaporating, solvent-carried release is preferred.
Does it also cure or waterproof the concrete?
No. ShaliSlip WB only treats the formwork face to aid release; it does not cure or waterproof the finished concrete. For curing you would use a curing compound such as STP’s ShaliCure range, and for waterproofing a separate system entirely.

How we position STP ShaliSlip WB

ShaliSlip WB is the water-based, low-odour choice within STP’s release-agent family. Where a site needs a fast-drying, solvent-carried release — for example cold-weather work or where water wash-off before the pour is a risk — its direct sibling ShaliSlip SB (solvent-based) is the natural alternative from the same brand. Remember that a release agent only handles demoulding: pair it with a proper curing compound such as STP’s ShaliCure range once the shutter is struck, and keep any structural waterproofing or repair on a separate specified system. Space Arc also distributes equivalent release and formwork chemistry from other majors (Fosroc, Sika, MC-Bauchemie), so we can match ShaliSlip WB against a specifier’s preferred brand on a given project.
