Fosroc Nitoflor SL3000 UT ESD
Flow-applied, electrostatic-dissipative (ESD) polyurethane-cement floor topping that controls static discharge while resisting abrasion, chemicals and physical aggression — engineered for cleanrooms, electronics assembly and computer rooms.
What is it?
A medium-to-heavy duty, three-component, flow-applied cementitious polyurethane (PU-cement) floor topping with built-in electrostatic-dissipative (ESD) properties, laid 3-6 mm thick over a conductive primer system and earthed via copper tape.
Where is it used?
Electronics manufacture and assembly rooms, computer/server rooms, cleanrooms, hospital operating theatres, and any process area where static control must be combined with a tough, seamless, chemical-resistant floor.
Why use it?
It does two jobs at once: it bleeds static charge to earth (resistance in the region of x10^4 ohms) to protect sensitive components and people, and it gives the durability of a PU-cement floor — high abrasion, impact and chemical resistance with a seamless, easy-to-clean matt finish.
How is it applied?
Installed by specialist applicators over prepared concrete: epoxy seal primer, self-adhesive copper earthing tape grid, a conductive ESD primer (resistance to earth verified <= 5 x 10^4 ohms), then the flow-applied dissipative topcoat de-aerated with a spiked roller.
About Fosroc Nitoflor SL3000 UT ESD
Fosroc Nitoflor SL3000 UT ESD belongs to Fosroc’s Nitoflor SL3000 polyurethane-cement (PU-cement) flooring family, the “ESD” suffix marking the electrostatic-dissipative version engineered for static-sensitive environments. Where a standard industrial resin floor simply has to survive forklifts and spillage, this system is asked to do something more demanding — it must continuously and predictably leak static charge to earth so that electrostatic discharge (ESD) cannot damage circuit boards, trigger a fault in a server hall, or create a hazard in a controlled medical or process space. It achieves this without giving up the toughness that defines the SL3000 range. Chemically it is a three-component, water-based, non-tainting cementitious polyurethane laid as a flow-applied (self-smoothing) topping, typically 3-6 mm thick, that cures to a smooth seamless matt finish. Because it is a PU-cement rather than a pure epoxy, it tolerates thermal movement, moisture in the slab and aggressive cleaning regimes far better than conventional epoxy self-levellers. The static control is not a surface gimmick: it is built into the full build-up — an epoxy seal coat, a grid of self-adhesive copper earthing tape bonding each bay to an earth point, a conductive undercoat, and the dissipative wearing topcoat above. The measured resistance to earth sits in the region of x10^4 ohms, the dissipative band that drains charge in a controlled way rather than letting it spike or, conversely, holding it. For Indian specifiers, the practical appeal is a single, factory-engineered package that covers structural durability, hygiene and ESD compliance, removing the guesswork of trying to retrofit antistatic behaviour onto an ordinary floor.
The technical insight
The defining engineering point is that ESD performance is a system property, not a coating property. The dissipative topcoat alone cannot control charge — it relies on an unbroken electrical path from the wearing surface, through a conductive primer, into a copper-tape earthing grid, and out to a verified earth point. Fosroc’s installation discipline reflects this: copper tape is laid at maximum 4 m centres so no part of the floor is more than 2 m from a tape run, and after the conductive primer cures the applicator must physically measure and log the resistance to earth, which has to be <= 5 x 10^4 ohms before the topcoat goes down. This in-process electrical sign-off is what separates a genuine ESD floor from a cosmetically similar one. The PU-cement chemistry contributes the second half of the value: in its standard UT form the SL3000 platform develops roughly 50 MPa compressive strength (BS 6319-2, 28 days), 7 MPa tensile and 15 MPa flexural strength, with low Taber abrasion loss (~120-143 mg/1000 cycles), giving a Type 5 (medium duty) floor at 3 mm and Type 7 (heavy duty) at 4-6 mm per BS 8204-6. That mechanical envelope, combined with a controlled-conductivity wearing course, is the engineering trade-off the product manages: enough conductive loading to dissipate charge, without compromising abrasion life or chemical resistance.
Where it is used
- Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing and assembly rooms where ESD can destroy components
- Computer rooms, server halls, data centres and telecom switch rooms
- Cleanrooms and controlled environments (electronics, optics, precision assembly)
- Hospital operating theatres and medical device areas requiring static control
- Pharmaceutical and process areas combining hygiene with static dissipation
- Defence, aerospace and instrumentation workshops handling sensitive electronics
- Battery and EV-component assembly lines where static and chemical exposure coexist
Key advantages
- Controlled electrostatic dissipation — resistance to earth in the region of x10^4 ohms protects components and people
- Full PU-cement durability: high abrasion, impact and chemical resistance in a single floor
- Seamless, jointless matt finish that is hygienic and easy to clean
- Water-based and non-tainting — suitable for cleanrooms and sensitive process areas
- Tolerant of thermal movement and slab moisture far better than pure epoxy ESD floors
- Fast cure schedule — light foot traffic in ~12 hours, full chemical resistance in 7 days
- Flow-applied (self-smoothing) for a uniform 3-6 mm topping over prepared concrete
- Verified, logged earth-resistance test built into the installation method for compliance evidence
Limitations & considerations
- ESD function depends on a correctly installed copper-tape earthing grid and a verified earth connection — a break in continuity defeats the system
- Must be installed by trained specialist applicators; not a DIY or general-contractor product
- Smooth matt finish becomes slippery when wet — good housekeeping and, where needed, a textured option are essential
- Not colour-fast: lighter and blue shades may yellow under UV/heat over time (cosmetic only, no loss of performance)
- Requires sound, dry concrete (min. RC30 / 25 MPa, surface tensile >1.5 MPa) with mechanical preparation; acid etching not permitted
- Periodic re-testing of floor-to-earth resistance is needed over service life to confirm ongoing ESD compliance
- Application is sensitive to ambient/substrate temperature and dew point — narrow ideal window (about 15-30 C)
- Colour can vary slightly between manufacturing batches
Selection & best practice
Treat the floor as an electrical system as much as a finish. Insist on RC30/25 MPa-minimum concrete mechanically prepared (grinding or shot-blasting, never acid etching), keep substrate and floor at least 3 C above dew point from priming to 48 hours after laying, and apply within the ideal 15-30 C window. Lay the self-adhesive copper earthing tape at maximum 4 m centres so no point is more than 2 m from a tape run, terminate to a properly bonded earth point, and — critically — measure and log the resistance to earth (target <= 5 x 10^4 ohms) after the conductive primer cures, before the topcoat is placed. De-aerate the flow-applied topping with a spiked roller within the short open time, never re-rolling set areas. Retain the commissioning resistance reading as compliance evidence and schedule periodic in-service ESD testing.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor SL3000 UT ESD
Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitoflor SL3000 UT ESD is the static-control member of the SL3000 polyurethane-cement family: the non-ESD Nitoflor SL3000 UT and SL3000 U cover the same heavy-duty food, dairy, pharma and engineering floors without antistatic requirements, while the SL3000 U ESD is its very close sibling (the published ESD system data — copper-tape earthing, conductive primer and <= 5 x 10^4 ohm earth resistance — is shared). Where only a chemically tough epoxy floor is needed, Fosroc’s Nitoflor FC range is the simpler choice; SL3000 UT ESD is specified specifically when both static dissipation and PU-cement durability are required together. Against the wider Indian market it competes most directly with Sika’s conductive/dissipative Sikafloor systems and MBCC/Master Builders Ucrete-based ESD floors, both credible alternatives for cleanroom and electronics work; STP and Dr. Fixit offer industrial and PU/epoxy flooring lines but are more commonly positioned for general industrial and waterproofing-led applications than for high-spec ESD cleanrooms. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering positions SL3000 UT ESD where the brief genuinely demands auditable static control plus a hard-wearing, hygienic, seamless floor — and will recommend a non-ESD SL3000 or an alternative system honestly where ESD is not actually required.
