What is it?

A single-component, pitch-modified liquid polyurethane that moisture-cures into a tough, seamless elastomeric waterproofing membrane with 500-700% elongation.

Where is it used?

Below-grade and concealed waterproofing: foundations, basement tanking, floor and suspended slabs, balconies, patios, bathrooms, inspection pits, planter boxes, inverted roofs and tunnels.

Why use it?

It forms a continuous joint-free barrier, bridges substrate cracks up to 2 mm, resists aggressive soil and ground-water conditions, and bonds to concrete without melting or flowing at elevated temperatures.

How is it applied?

Applied cold, direct from the can by brush, roller, squeegee or spray over primed concrete; single coat on horizontal surfaces, with UV-exposed areas overcoated with Nitoproof Reflectacoat.

About Fosroc Nitoproof 600 Standard

Fosroc Nitoproof 600 Standard is a liquid-applied, cold-cure waterproofing membrane built around a single-component, pitch-modified polyurethane chemistry. Supplied ready to use in the can, it cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture to form a tough, seamless elastomeric film bonded directly to the substrate. Because there is no membrane joint, lap or weld to fail, it is a natural fit for irregular geometry and detailed areas where sheet membranes are awkward and slow to dress in.

The product is designed for both horizontal and vertical concrete surfaces and is most often specified for concealed and below-grade waterproofing rather than exposed roofs. Typical Indian applications include raft and strip foundations, basement and lift-pit tanking, floor and suspended slabs, balconies, patios, bathrooms and toilet sunk slabs, inspection pits, planter boxes, inverted roofs and tunnels. Its pitch-modified backbone gives it a strong affinity for damp-environment service and good barrier behaviour against corrosive, salt-laden soil and ground water.

For contractors and consultants the appeal is straightforward: one component means no on-site mixing ratios to get wrong, the liquid simplifies detailing around penetrations and upstands, and the cured film stays flexible across a wide service-temperature band. A standout property for a structural-movement-prone country like India is elongation of 500-700% with high recovery, which lets the membrane accommodate thermal cycling and minor settlement while continuing to bridge cracks up to 2 mm wide.

Nitoproof 600 Standard is the foundation grade in a family that includes Nitoproof 600PF (a flexible polyurethane variant) and Nitoproof 600WB (water-based). Where the membrane will be permanently exposed to UV, Fosroc requires it to be overcoated with Nitoproof Reflectacoat, an aluminium-leafing reflective top coat, since the bare pitch-modified film is not formulated for long-term direct sunlight. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies the product as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, pairing it with the correct primer, reinforcement and detailing system for the substrate at hand.

The technical insight

The chemistry to understand is moisture-cured, pitch-modified polyurethane. The prepolymer reacts with humidity in the air to cross-link, which is why ambient conditions and film thickness govern cure rather than a fixed pot life. Tack-free time at 25 degrees C is 15-24 hours, so each coat needs realistic dwell before overcoating or trafficking, and very dry or cold weather will extend it. At 92% solids and around 200 poise viscosity, it is a high-build liquid that lays down a substantial dry film per pass, which is what enables single-coat application on horizontal surfaces and reliable 2 mm crack-bridging. The 500-700% elongation paired with ~95% recovery from 200% strain is the elastomeric reserve that absorbs structural movement; the modest 1.60 N/mm2 tensile and Shore A 26 hardness confirm this is a soft, accommodating membrane meant to be protected, not a wearing surface. Two non-negotiables drive site success: a sound, primed, dry-to-touch concrete substrate (laitance and trapped moisture are the usual causes of blistering on PU systems), and a protection layer or screed before backfilling or tiling, because the film is deliberately soft. Finally, the material contains flammable solvent with a low flash point, so no naked flames, hot works or smoking during application and curing.

Where it is used

  • Basement and retaining-wall tanking, including lift pits and aggressive ground-water conditions
  • Raft, strip and pile-cap foundations and below-grade floor slabs
  • Bathrooms, toilet sunk slabs and wet areas under tile beds
  • Balconies, patios and external podium decks (with screed/tile protection)
  • Inverted (protected-membrane) roofs and planter boxes
  • Inspection pits, sumps and non-potable water-retaining structures
  • Tunnels, subways and other concealed buried concrete structures
  • Crack-prone slabs needing a flexible membrane that bridges up to 2 mm

Key advantages

  • Single-component, ready to use direct from the can with no mixing-ratio errors
  • Liquid application gives a fully seamless, joint-free membrane around complex details
  • Very high elasticity (500-700% elongation) with ~95% recovery accommodates movement
  • Bridges substrate cracks up to 2 mm wide
  • Continuous adhesion to concrete prevents lateral water migration beneath the film
  • Forms an impervious barrier resistant to aggressive, salt-laden soil and ground water
  • Irreversible chemical cure does not melt or flow at elevated ambient temperatures
  • Wide service-temperature range of -40 to +70 degrees C
  • Single-coat on horizontal surfaces speeds installation; easily spot-repaired

Limitations & considerations

  • Not UV-stable on its own; permanently exposed areas must be overcoated with Nitoproof Reflectacoat
  • Soft membrane (Shore A 26) that needs a protective screed, board or tile layer before trafficking or backfilling
  • Contains flammable solvent with a low flash point; no naked flames, hot works or smoking during use and cure
  • Not suitable for potable-water-retaining structures
  • Moisture-cure means tack-free time (15-24 h at 25 degrees C) and full cure lengthen in cold or very dry conditions
  • Demands a sound, clean, dry and correctly primed substrate; trapped moisture or laitance causes blistering
  • Black colour only; aesthetics rely on the protection or finish layer above it

Selection & best practice

Confirm the concrete is fully cured, sound, clean and surface-dry, then apply the appropriate Fosroc primer and let it tack off. Pre-treat cracks, construction joints, corners and penetrations with a fillet/detail coat (and reinforcing fabric where movement is expected) before the main coats. Apply Nitoproof 600 Standard cold by brush, roller, squeegee or spray to the specified film build, respecting the 15-24 hour tack-free interval before any second coat or trafficking, and work within the 5-50 degrees C application window. Where the finished membrane will see UV, overcoat with Nitoproof Reflectacoat; everywhere else, install a protective screed, board or tile bed before backfilling or use. Keep all ignition sources away during application and curing, and always validate film thickness and consumption against the current Fosroc datasheet and a site mock-up before bulk work.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Fosroc Nitoproof 600 Standard?
It is a single-component, pitch-modified liquid polyurethane waterproofing membrane. Applied cold direct from the can, it cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture to form a tough, seamless elastomeric film on horizontal and vertical concrete surfaces.
Where should it be used, and where should it not?
It suits concealed and below-grade waterproofing such as foundations, basements, bathrooms, balconies, inspection pits, planter boxes, inverted roofs and tunnels. It is not for potable-water-retaining structures, and it must not be left as a permanently exposed roof finish without the Nitoproof Reflectacoat overcoat.
How flexible is it and can it bridge cracks?
Very flexible. Tested to ASTM D412-90 it shows 500-700% elongation with about 95% recovery from 200% strain, and it bridges substrate cracks up to 2 mm wide, which makes it well suited to movement-prone Indian structures.
Is it UV-stable for exposed terraces?
No. The bare pitch-modified film is not formulated for long-term direct sunlight. For UV-exposed areas Fosroc requires overcoating with Nitoproof Reflectacoat, an aluminium-leafing reflective coating; otherwise the membrane should be protected by a screed, tile or ballast layer.
How long before it can be overcoated or trafficked?
Tack-free time is 15-24 hours at 25 degrees C. In cold or very dry weather the moisture cure slows, so allow longer between coats and before applying protection. Always trafficking and tiling should wait until the membrane is fully cured and a protection layer is in place.
How does it compare with other waterproofing membranes?
Against PU rivals like Sika and STP, Nitoproof 600 Standard differentiates on very high elongation and its pitch-modified barrier suited to aggressive soils. Cementitious systems such as Dr. Fixit and MBS are easier to apply and breathable but far less elastic, so the right choice depends on movement, exposure and substrate. Space Arc can advise on the best fit.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 600 Standard

Within the Fosroc range, Nitoproof 600 Standard is the workhorse pitch-modified PU grade for below-grade and concealed concrete, sitting alongside Nitoproof 600PF (flexible PU) and the water-based Nitoproof 600WB; for UV-exposed terraces it is specified with Nitoproof Reflectacoat as the top coat, and it is typically used with the matching Fosroc primer and, on exposed decks, more weather-stable acrylic or aliphatic-PU finishes from the wider Nitoproof line. Against the broader Indian market it competes with single-component and two-pack PU membranes such as Sika (Sikalastic), STP (Mast/Spectra) and other PU systems, while crystalline and cementitious products from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and MBS occupy the easier-to-apply, breathable but lower-elongation end of the spectrum. Honestly, Nitoproof 600 Standard is strongest where high elasticity, crack-bridging and resistance to aggressive ground water matter most, and it is a poorer pick where the client wants a self-coloured, UV-stable exposed finish or a potable-water-rated lining, where an aliphatic-PU or food-grade system would be more appropriate. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can specify the correct grade, primer and protection build-up and benchmark it honestly against these alternatives for each project.
