What is it?

A single-component, water-based bituminous emulsion coating from Fosroc that dries to form a continuous, flexible damp-proof membrane and vapour seal on concrete and masonry.

Where is it used?

Below-ground RCC, foundations, retaining walls, plinth beams, basement walls, the underside of slabs and external face of substructure masonry — anywhere a tanking/DPC layer or vapour barrier is specified.

Why use it?

It is solvent-free (no fire or odour hazard), can be brushed or sprayed onto damp surfaces, gives high coverage at low cost, and provides a barrier against ground moisture and water-vapour migration.

How is it applied?

Cold-applied by brush, roller or spray in two coats over a prepared, sound substrate; the first coat is allowed to dry before the second is applied at right angles to it.

About Fosroc Nitoproof A5

Fosroc Nitoproof A5 is a ready-to-use, water-based bituminous coating that cures to a tough, flexible film acting as a damp-proof membrane (DPM) and vapour seal on concrete and masonry. It sits in Fosroc’s well-established Nitoproof family of waterproofing and damp-proofing products and is positioned as the economical, general-purpose bituminous option for protecting substructure concrete against ground moisture. Because the binder is a bitumen emulsion carried in water rather than a solvent, the product is effectively odourless, non-flammable in the wet state and free of the health and site-safety concerns associated with solvent-based bitumen paints — a meaningful advantage in enclosed basements, lift pits and confined excavations. For Indian projects, Nitoproof A5 is most often specified as the protective and damp-proofing coat on the external face of below-ground RCC and on blockwork or brickwork that needs a vapour barrier before backfilling or plastering. It is the kind of product that quietly does a lot of work on a site: it is forgiving of damp (but not running-wet) substrates, it does not need primers or heating, and it builds coverage quickly with simple brush or spray application. Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof A5 as part of a complete Fosroc substructure waterproofing package across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and our applicator teams routinely pair it with Fosroc’s joint sealants, waterstops and cementitious systems where a single coating cannot carry the whole detail. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator we recommend that the current regional Product Data Sheet (downloadable from fosroc.com by selecting India) is always used as the binding reference for coverage, coats and cure on a specific job, since Fosroc periodically updates its formulations and figures by region.

The technical insight

The defining characteristic of Nitoproof A5 is that it is a water-based bitumen emulsion, not a solvent-cutback bitumen. In practice this changes how it behaves on site. A solvent-borne bitumen paint dries by the solvent flashing off — fast, but flammable, smelly and unsuitable for poorly ventilated spaces, and it cannot be applied to a damp surface. An emulsion like A5 instead “breaks” as the water phase evaporates and the dispersed bitumen droplets coalesce into a continuous film; this is why A5 tolerates a damp (matt-damp, not glistening-wet) substrate and is safe to use in confined excavations. The trade-off is that emulsions are sensitive to weather during the cure window: rain or standing water before the film has fully coalesced can re-emulsify and wash off the coating, and low temperatures or high humidity slow the break. The membrane is intended as a barrier against capillary moisture and water-vapour transmission — i.e. damp-proofing and below-ground protection — rather than as a structural waterproofing membrane designed to resist a sustained positive hydrostatic head on its own. Where a project faces a high or fluctuating water table, the correct engineering response is to treat A5 as one element within a tanking system (with waterstops at construction joints, sealants at movement joints, and a cementitious or higher-build elastomeric membrane where head resistance is required) rather than relying on the bituminous film in isolation. The cured film is flexible and adheres well to clean, sound concrete and masonry, but like all bitumen coatings it should be protected from prolonged direct UV exposure and mechanical damage by prompt backfilling or a protection board/screed.

Where it is used

  • Damp-proof membrane (DPM) and vapour seal on below-ground RCC such as foundations, raft slabs, plinth beams and retaining walls
  • Protective coating on the external (earth) face of basement walls and substructure concrete before backfilling
  • Vapour barrier and damp-proofing on masonry — blockwork and brickwork — in substructure and at plinth level
  • Tanking-coat element within a wider Fosroc substructure waterproofing system combined with waterstops and joint sealants
  • Damp-proofing under floor screeds and over the underside/soffit of suspended slabs against rising/penetrating moisture
  • Protective coat over buried concrete in mild-to-moderate aggressive ground conditions as part of a specified protection regime

Key advantages

  • Water-based and solvent-free — effectively odourless, non-flammable in the wet state and with no significant health hazard, suitable for confined basements and pits
  • Single-component and ready to use — no mixing, no primers and no heating required, reducing application error on site
  • Cold-applied by brush, roller or spray — fast, simple application that builds coverage quickly and economically
  • Can be applied to damp (not running-wet) substrates, reducing waiting time on freshly cured concrete
  • Cures to a flexible, continuous film that bridges fine surface imperfections and accommodates minor substrate movement
  • Economical, high-coverage general-purpose damp-proofing — a cost-effective default for large substructure areas
  • Backed by Fosroc’s Nitoproof system, so it integrates cleanly with compatible sealants, waterstops and protection products

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a stand-alone structural waterproofing membrane against sustained hydrostatic head — for high water tables it must be designed into a full tanking system
  • Water-based emulsion is vulnerable during cure — rain, standing water, low temperature or high humidity before full film formation can wash off or impair the coating
  • Requires a sound, clean substrate free of laitance, oil, loose material and curing-compound residue; poor preparation is the usual cause of failure
  • Bituminous film degrades under prolonged UV and is not an exposed/trafficable finish — it must be protected by prompt backfill, screed or protection board
  • Application to a glistening-wet or ponding surface, or below the manufacturer’s minimum application temperature, will compromise adhesion and curing
  • Black bituminous coating can bleed/stain through subsequent light-coloured finishes if not isolated, so it is unsuitable directly under decorative coats without a barrier
  • Exact coverage, coat count and cure times must be confirmed against the current Fosroc India Product Data Sheet for the specific batch and conditions

Selection & best practice

Start with substrate preparation: the concrete or masonry must be sound, clean and free of laitance, dust, oil, curing compound and loose material — remove laitance by light grit-blasting or wire-brushing, fill blowholes and honeycombing, and round off sharp arrises. Damp surfaces are acceptable but there must be no standing water or glistening film. Apply Nitoproof A5 cold in two coats by brush, roller or suitable spray, working it well into the surface; allow the first coat to dry to a continuous, touch-dry film before applying the second coat at right angles to the first to eliminate pinholes and ensure full, even build. Reinforce vulnerable details — construction joints, pipe penetrations, internal/external corners and movement joints — with the appropriate Fosroc waterstop or sealant rather than relying on the coating alone. Protect the freshly coated and curing membrane from rain, ponding water and direct sun, and do not backfill or screed until the film has fully cured. Backfill against a protection board or apply a protective screed promptly to guard against mechanical damage, and avoid trapping the black coating directly beneath light-coloured decorative finishes. Always cross-check coverage rate, number of coats, recoat interval, cure time and minimum application temperature against the latest Fosroc India Product Data Sheet for the job, and store the material in sealed containers away from frost and direct heat.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoproof A5 a real product, and what exactly is it?
Yes. Nitoproof A5 is a genuine Fosroc product with an official listing at fosroc.com. It is a single-component, water-based bituminous coating that dries to form a damp-proof membrane and vapour seal for concrete and masonry, used mainly as a protective and damp-proofing coat on below-ground concrete.
Can Nitoproof A5 be applied to a damp surface?
Yes — being a water-based bitumen emulsion, it can be applied to damp substrates, which is one of its key advantages over solvent-based bitumen paints. However, there must be no standing water or glistening-wet film, and the coating must be protected from rain until it has fully cured, or it can re-emulsify and wash off.
Will Nitoproof A5 stop water under hydrostatic pressure?
It is designed primarily as a damp-proof membrane and vapour barrier, not as a stand-alone structural waterproofing membrane against a sustained positive water head. Where a high or fluctuating water table is present, it should be specified as part of a full tanking system with waterstops, joint sealants and, where required, a higher-build cementitious or elastomeric membrane.
How many coats are needed and how is it applied?
It is cold-applied by brush, roller or spray, typically in two coats, with the second coat applied at right angles to the first once that has dried, to eliminate pinholes and ensure even build. The exact coverage rate, coat count and recoat interval should be confirmed against the current Fosroc India Product Data Sheet for your conditions.
How does Nitoproof A5 differ from solvent-based bitumen paints and from Nitoproof Damp Protect?
Unlike solvent-cutback bitumen paints, A5 is water-based — solvent-free, low-odour, non-flammable when wet and applicable to damp surfaces. Nitoproof Damp Protect is a different product: a two-component elastomeric cementitious damp-proof coating. A5 is the economical bituminous emulsion option, while Damp Protect is a cementitious system for different detailing requirements.
Does Space Arc Engineering supply and apply Nitoproof A5 in India?
Yes. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof A5 and the wider Fosroc waterproofing range across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and our teams can specify and apply it as part of a complete, correctly detailed substructure waterproofing system.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof A5

Within the Fosroc range, Nitoproof A5 is the economical, water-based bituminous damp-proofing option, sitting alongside its near-identical sibling Nitoproof A10 (also a water-based bituminous DPM/vapour seal) and the higher-specification Nitoproof family members used for true membrane waterproofing — for example the polyurethane Nitoproof 600/725/800/900 liquid membranes and the cementitious Nitoproof Damp Protect, which is a two-component elastomeric cementitious coating rather than a bitumen emulsion. On most substructure jobs A5 is detailed together with Fosroc waterstops (Hydrotite / Supercast ranges), joint sealants (Nitoseal / Thioflex) and, where chemical or hydrostatic resistance is needed, a Brushbond cementitious membrane. Against competitor systems, the honest positioning is this: for a low-cost, solvent-free below-ground damp-proofing and vapour-barrier coat, A5 is directly comparable to Sika’s bituminous emulsion DPM coatings, Dr. Fixit’s bitumen-based damp-proofing products (e.g. the Pidiproof/LW and bitumen-coating lines), MBS/MYK Laticrete bituminous coatings, and STP’s bituminous primers and DPM coatings. Where the requirement shifts from simple damp-proofing to crack-bridging, high-build or pressure-resistant waterproofing, the appropriate comparison is no longer A5 but the elastomeric and polyurethane membranes from those same brands. Space Arc Engineering’s recommendation is to use A5 where its strengths — economy, coverage, safety and damp-tolerance — genuinely fit, and to step up to the correct Fosroc membrane within a tanking system wherever the structure will see a real water head.
