What is it?

A single-component, water-based acrylic liquid-applied waterproofing coating from Fosroc. Applied wet, it cures into a continuous, seamless elastomeric membrane that protects surfaces against rain, sun, wind and frost.

Where is it used?

Exposed concrete roof slabs, terraces, balconies, chajjas, parapet junctions and external wall faces — situations where the membrane stays permanently exposed to UV and weather rather than being buried or screeded over.

Why use it?

It is UV-resistant and weather-stable (so it does not need a protective topcoat for exposure), highly flexible to bridge minor substrate movement and hairline cracks, and easy to apply by brush, roller or spray with no torching, solvents or hot works.

How is it applied?

Surface is cleaned and primed (with Fosroc Nitoprime AW where required), then Nitoproof AW is applied in two or more coats — ideally in alternating directions and often with a reinforcing fabric at joints and upstands — to build a uniform, pinhole-free film.

About Fosroc Nitoproof AW

Fosroc Nitoproof AW is an acrylic, water-based liquid-applied waterproofing coating engineered to give long-term protection to a wide range of external surfaces. Unlike sheet membranes that are mechanically fixed or torch-applied, Nitoproof AW is brushed, rolled or sprayed on as a liquid and cures in place to form a single, seamless, jointless membrane that follows every contour of the substrate. This continuity is the core advantage of liquid systems: there are no overlaps or seams to fail, and complex details such as drain mouths, pipe penetrations, parapet upstands and chajja edges can be dressed without cutting or welding.\n\nThe distinguishing characteristic of the \”AW\” grade within Fosroc’s Nitoproof family is that it is formulated to remain exposed. A surface coated with Nitoproof AW resists the daily punishment of sun, rain, wind and frost, and is stable under ultraviolet light, so it can be left as the finished, trafficable-light wearing surface on a roof or terrace without an additional sacrificial topcoat. Its high elongation lets the cured film stretch and recover with the natural thermal movement of a roof slab and bridge fine shrinkage cracks that would otherwise become leak paths.\n\nBecause it is water-based, the product is low-odour and free of the flammability and solvent concerns associated with bitumen torch-on felts or polyurethane systems. That makes it well suited to occupied buildings, schools, hospitals and residential terraces across Delhi NCR and the rest of India, where hot works are often impractical or prohibited. For Indian conditions specifically, a reflective acrylic membrane also helps reduce heat gain through the roof slab, supporting cooler interiors during peak summer.\n\nAs an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof AW together with its companion primer and the wider Fosroc waterproofing system, and can advise on the correct build-up for a given roof, terrace or external wall.

The technical insight

Nitoproof AW belongs to the family of single-component, water-based acrylic-polymer-emulsion waterproofing coatings. It cures by evaporation of water and coalescence of the acrylic particles into a continuous elastomeric film — there is no chemical mixing, no induction time and no pot life to manage, which is a practical advantage over two-part PU or epoxy systems on site. The trade-off inherent to this chemistry is that it needs warm, dry weather to cure: application onto damp substrates, during rain, or below the minimum film-forming temperature will prevent proper coalescence and compromise the membrane, so it should not be applied when rain is imminent. The film builds by applying multiple coats wet-on-dry; because each coat is thin, achieving the specified dry film thickness depends on disciplined coverage control and at least two cross-applied coats rather than a single heavy pass. At stress-prone details — internal/external corners, expansion joints, pipe collars and slab-to-parapet junctions — the membrane is reinforced by embedding a polyester or glass-fibre scrim into a wet coat, which locally raises both thickness and crack-bridging capacity. The acrylic binder is specifically UV-stabilised, distinguishing the AW grade from buried-membrane grades that would chalk or degrade if left exposed. Adhesion is achieved through priming and good surface preparation, since acrylics rely on a clean, sound, laitance-free substrate to develop bond.

Where it is used

  • Exposed RCC roof slabs and terraces requiring a UV-stable, walkable-light waterproof finish
  • Balconies, sit-outs, chajjas and weather-shades on residential and commercial buildings
  • Parapet walls, copings and roof-to-wall upstand junctions
  • External wall faces and facades needing a flexible, breathable weatherproof coat
  • Re-waterproofing and refurbishment of ageing or leaking terraces over sound existing substrates
  • Light-traffic roof areas around water tanks, AC units and service platforms
  • Detailing around drain outlets, rainwater pipes and roof penetrations

Key advantages

  • Seamless, jointless membrane that conforms to complex roof geometry with no overlaps to fail
  • UV-resistant and weather-stable — can be left permanently exposed without a separate protective screed or topcoat
  • High elongation accommodates thermal movement and bridges fine shrinkage/hairline cracks
  • Water-based, low-odour, non-flammable — safe for occupied buildings and sites where hot works are barred
  • Cold-applied by brush, roller or spray; no torching, no solvents, fast trade learning curve
  • Single-component — no mixing, no pot life, minimal wastage and easy part-area touch-ups
  • Light-coloured reflective finish helps cut roof heat gain in Indian summers
  • Backed by the full Fosroc system (primer, reinforcement scrim, repair mortars) and Space Arc’s applicator support

Limitations & considerations

  • Acrylic chemistry needs warm, dry conditions to cure — cannot be applied in rain, onto damp substrates, or just before expected rainfall
  • Not intended for permanent water immersion or sustained ponding; designed for shedding-water, weather-exposed surfaces with adequate falls
  • Not a heavy-traffic or vehicular wearing surface — needs protection/screed if subjected to regular foot or vehicle traffic
  • Performance depends heavily on surface preparation; bond fails over dusty, oily, friable or laitance-covered substrates
  • Membrane thickness is built up coat-by-coat, so under-application or skipped coats directly reduce performance
  • Not a structural crack-injection product — live, moving or wide cracks must be cut, filled and detailed before coating
  • Always confirm coverage, thickness, cure times and substrate suitability against the current region-specific Fosroc TDS before specifying

Selection & best practice

Treat Nitoproof AW as a system, not just a coat. Start with a sound, clean, dry substrate — grind off laitance, repair honeycombing and spalls, round off sharp internal corners with a cementitious fillet, and ensure positive falls to outlets so water drains rather than ponds. Prime the prepared surface with the matching Fosroc primer (Nitoprime AW) to lock down dust and develop bond. Reinforce all vulnerable details first — corners, upstands, expansion joints, pipe penetrations and drain mouths — by embedding scrim into a wet base coat. Then apply Nitoproof AW in at least two full coats, working the second coat at right angles to the first to eliminate pinholes and ensure uniform film build, and allow each coat to dry before recoating. Plan the work for a dry-weather window with no rain forecast during application and initial cure. Always verify the exact coverage, recoat interval, dry film thickness and curing data against the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for your region, and flood-test or rain-test before handover.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoproof AW a real product?
Yes. Nitoproof AW is a genuine Fosroc product listed on the official Fosroc website as an acrylic waterproofing coating that provides long-term protection to exposed surfaces, with weather and UV resistance and high elongation. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor.
What type of waterproofing is Nitoproof AW?
It is a single-component, water-based acrylic liquid-applied membrane. It is brushed, rolled or sprayed on as a liquid and cures in place into a seamless, flexible, UV-stable elastomeric film — as opposed to a torch-on bitumen felt or a sheet membrane.
Where should Nitoproof AW be used — and where should it not?
It is designed for permanently exposed external surfaces that shed water: roofs, terraces, balconies, chajjas, parapets and external walls. It is not intended for permanent water immersion, sustained ponding, or heavy foot/vehicle traffic without additional protection. For buried/below-ground waterproofing, other Fosroc systems such as the Brushbond or Proofex ranges are more appropriate.
Does it need a primer and how many coats?
Yes — prepare and prime the substrate (with Fosroc Nitoprime AW or the recommended Fosroc primer) before coating. As a liquid acrylic system it is built up in at least two coats applied at right angles to each other, with reinforcing scrim at corners, joints and penetrations. Always follow the coat count, recoat interval and coverage given on the current Fosroc TDS.
What is the coverage rate of Nitoproof AW?
Coverage depends on substrate texture, number of coats and required film thickness, and Fosroc publishes the exact figure in the region-specific Technical Data Sheet. Space Arc can provide the current TDS and calculate material quantities for your specific roof or terrace area. We avoid quoting an unverified number here.
How is it different from Fosroc Brushbond or Nitoproof UVR Topcoat?
Brushbond is a cementitious-acrylic, often two-component coating with strong adhesion to damp masonry, widely used for terraces and wet areas. Nitoproof UVR Topcoat is a UV-protective topcoat applied over other membranes. Nitoproof AW is a stand-alone exposed acrylic membrane in its own right. The best choice depends on substrate, exposure and movement — Space Arc can recommend the right system for your project.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof AW

Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitoproof AW sits among the acrylic, exposed-application waterproofers and is closely related to Fosroc Brushbond / Brushbond Roofguard (cementitious-acrylic terrace coatings) and to the Nitoproof UVR Topcoat used to UV-protect other membranes; for buried, below-ground or podium waterproofing, Fosroc’s Proofex sheet membranes and Hydroproof systems are the more suitable companions, while Nitoprime AW is its matching primer. Against the wider Indian market, Nitoproof AW competes with acrylic and elastomeric liquid membranes such as Sika’s Sikalastic and SikaTop ranges, MYK Arment/MBS waterproofing coatings, Dr. Fixit’s acrylic and PU roof products (e.g. Newcoat / Roofseal), and STP’s range — most of which offer comparable exposed-acrylic options. Nitoproof AW’s pitch is the combination of Fosroc’s globally specified brand, genuine UV/weather stability for exposed use, high elongation, and easy cold application, backed locally by Space Arc Engineering’s distribution and applicator capability across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. For any specification, the deciding factors are substrate condition, exposure, movement and required service life — and we recommend confirming the final selection and figures against the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet rather than coverage claims alone.
