What is it?

A high-strength, lightweight glass-fibre open-weave fabric (approx. 53 g/m2) designed to be embedded as reinforcement within bituminous, liquid-applied Nitoproof waterproofing membranes.

Where is it used?

At movement joints, corners, substrate cracks, timber/insulation panel joints and high-profile asphalt roofs on terraces, podiums, basements, water tanks and treatment plants across India.

Why use it?

It significantly increases the localised strength and crack-bridging capacity of the membrane exactly where stress concentrates, reducing the risk of splitting and leaks at vulnerable details.

How is it applied?

Embedded with a soft brush into the wet first coat of a Nitoproof liquid membrane, extended at least 100 mm beyond the detail and overlapped 25 mm, then over-coated with a second coat.

About Fosroc Nitoproof Scrim

Fosroc Nitoproof Scrim is a reinforcing fabric, not a standalone waterproofing material. It is a high-strength, lightweight, glass-fibre-based open-weave mesh developed to be embedded as reinforcement within Fosroc’s range of bituminous, liquid-applied Nitoproof waterproofing membranes. In a liquid membrane system, the coating itself provides the watertight barrier, but at points of localised movement and stress — expansion and construction joints, internal and external corners, cracks in the substrate, and junctions between dissimilar materials such as timber or insulation boards — an unreinforced film can stretch, fatigue and ultimately split. Nitoproof Scrim solves this by carrying tensile load across these weak points so the membrane behaves as a continuous, reinforced detail rather than a thin unsupported film. Because the weave is open, the liquid membrane wets through both faces and fully encapsulates the glass strands, locking the reinforcement into the cured film rather than leaving it as a separate, peel-prone layer. The fabric is chemically inert and unaffected by the solvents present in Nitoproof products, and it is biologically inert, so it will not rot or suffer biological attack over the service life of the roof or structure. It is supplied in rolls 1 m wide and 50 m long, ready for immediate site use, and it is intended purely as a companion product to the Nitoproof liquid membranes — it is specified alongside them, never on its own.

The technical insight

Nitoproof Scrim is a glass-fibre (E-glass) open-weave fabric with a nominal weight of approximately 53 g/m2 (Fosroc’s specification clause calls for a minimum of 50 g/m2). The datasheet identifies the yarn construction as warp EC9-34 and weft EC9-68 — standard glass-filament designations where EC9 denotes continuous E-glass filaments of about 9 micron diameter. The open weave is the functional core of the product: it lets the liquid Nitoproof membrane pass through and fully embed the mesh, promoting easier wetting-out and optimum material consumption rather than the fabric floating on the surface. Correct embedment requires a minimum of two coats of the liquid-applied membrane in every reinforced area — the first coat receives the scrim, which is worked in with a soft brush, and the second coat encapsulates it. The fabric must extend at least 100 mm beyond the predefined critical area, and all fabric-to-fabric joints must be overlapped by a minimum of 25 mm to maintain continuity of reinforcement. A key technical limitation governs its use: the scrim must not be applied by adhering it to a previously cured waterproof membrane — it has to be embedded into a wet, freshly applied coat so the reinforcement becomes monolithic with the film. Stored correctly in dry conditions away from direct sunlight, the fabric has an indefinite shelf life, which makes it convenient to keep on site stock; it is, however, a flammable material and must be kept away from sources of ignition.

Where it is used

  • Reinforcing movement and construction joints within Nitoproof liquid membranes
  • Strengthening internal and external corner details and upstands
  • Bridging crazing and hairline cracks in concrete and screed substrates
  • Sealing joints between timber substrates or insulation panels
  • Detailing asphalt roofs where high substrate profile causes large membrane thickness variation
  • Reinforcing penetrations, drain outlets and pipe collars before general membrane application
  • Local strengthening at terrace, podium and basement detail junctions

Key advantages

  • High strength — significantly increases the localised strength and crack-bridging capacity of the membrane at vulnerable details
  • Open-weave design promotes easy wetting-out and full encapsulation by the liquid membrane, with optimum material consumption
  • Chemically inert — unaffected by the solvents used in Nitoproof products
  • Biologically inert — resistant to rotting and biological attack over the membrane’s service life
  • Lightweight and supplied in ready-to-use 1 m x 50 m rolls for immediate site application
  • Indefinite shelf life when stored dry and out of direct sunlight, reducing wastage of site stock
  • Compatible across the bituminous, liquid-applied Nitoproof membrane range, simplifying detailing and specification

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a standalone waterproofing product — it only works embedded within a Nitoproof liquid-applied membrane
  • Must not be applied by adhering to a previously cured membrane; it has to be worked into a wet, freshly applied coat
  • Requires a minimum of two membrane coats in every reinforced area for proper encapsulation
  • Glass-fibre fabric, so it is flammable and must be kept away from sources of ignition
  • Detailing is labour-sensitive — inadequate brushing-in, insufficient overlap (under 25 mm) or short extension (under 100 mm) compromises performance
  • Compatible specifically with bituminous Nitoproof membranes; pairing with unrelated coating systems should be verified before use
  • Performance depends on substrate preparation and on following the parent membrane’s coverage rates and cure times

Selection & best practice

Define every critical area — joints, corners, cracks, penetrations — before work begins, and prepare the substrate per the parent Nitoproof membrane’s datasheet. Apply the first coat of the Nitoproof liquid membrane to the prepared substrate at the quoted coverage rate, then lay the Nitoproof Scrim into the wet film and work it in firmly with a soft brush so it is fully wetted out and free of air pockets, with no dry or bridging fibres. Ensure the fabric extends at least 100 mm beyond each detail and overlap all fabric-to-fabric joints by a minimum of 25 mm. Apply the second membrane coat to the manufacturer’s instructions, taking care not to dislodge the embedded scrim, and respect the parent product’s overcoat and cure times. Keep rolls dry, out of direct sunlight and away from ignition sources on site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoproof Scrim a waterproofing membrane on its own?
No. It is a glass-fibre reinforcing fabric, not a waterproofing material. It only functions when embedded within a Fosroc Nitoproof liquid-applied, bituminous membrane, where it strengthens vulnerable details such as joints, corners and cracks. The liquid membrane provides the watertight barrier; the scrim provides the localised tensile reinforcement.
What is Nitoproof Scrim made of and how much does it weigh?
It is a high-strength, lightweight glass-fibre-based open-weave fabric. The datasheet gives a nominal weight of about 53 g/m2 against a specification minimum of 50 g/m2, with a yarn construction of warp EC9-34 and weft EC9-68. The open weave lets the liquid membrane pass through and fully encapsulate the strands.
How is Nitoproof Scrim applied?
Apply the first coat of the Nitoproof liquid membrane to the prepared substrate, then lay the scrim into the wet film and brush it in with a soft brush until fully wetted out. Extend the fabric at least 100 mm beyond the detail, overlap fabric-to-fabric joints by at least 25 mm, then apply the second membrane coat without dislodging the scrim. A minimum of two coats is required in every reinforced area.
Where is Nitoproof Scrim typically used?
At movement and construction joints, internal and external corners, substrate crazing and cracks, joints between timber substrates or insulation panels, and on asphalt roofs where high substrate profile causes large variation in membrane thickness. In Indian projects this covers terraces, podiums, basements, water tanks and treatment-plant details.
What roll size and shelf life does it have?
Nitoproof Scrim is supplied in rolls 1 m wide by 50 m long, ready for immediate site use. It has an indefinite shelf life when stored correctly in dry conditions away from direct sunlight. Note that the fabric is flammable and must be kept away from sources of ignition.
Are there any key limitations to be aware of?
Yes. The scrim must not be applied by adhering it to a previously cured waterproof membrane — it has to be embedded into a wet, freshly applied coat to become monolithic with the film. It also requires at least two membrane coats per reinforced area, and it works specifically with bituminous Nitoproof membranes rather than as a universal reinforcement.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof Scrim

Nitoproof Scrim is a detailing accessory within the Fosroc Nitoproof waterproofing ecosystem rather than a competitor to membranes in their own right. It is specified alongside Fosroc’s bituminous, liquid-applied membranes — products such as Nitoproof 600, Nitoproof 725 and Nitoproof 800 — to reinforce joints, corners and cracks, and it sits naturally with Fosroc detailing and joint products like Nitoseal sealants and Proofex jointing systems. Because the scrim is a generic glass-fibre reinforcing mesh, equivalents exist across most major waterproofing brands: Sika supplies reinforcing fleece and scrim (for example Sika Reemat / SikaTop fleece) for its Sikalastic liquid systems, MBS (MYK / MBCC heritage) and STP Limited offer glass and polyester reinforcing fabrics for their respective membranes, and Dr. Fixit markets reinforcing mesh and tapes for its liquid waterproofing range. The important technical caveat is compatibility: a reinforcing fabric should be matched to the membrane chemistry and cure profile it is embedded in, so for a Fosroc-specified system Nitoproof Scrim is the correct partner product. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoproof Scrim together with the full Nitoproof membrane range and can advise on the right membrane-plus-scrim combination for terrace, basement, podium and water-retaining details.
