What is it?

A cold-applied, self-adhesive sheet membrane made from a polymer-modified bitumen layer bonded to a polyethylene surface film and internally reinforced with a fibreglass mat. It forms a continuous, fully-bonded waterproof barrier without any heat, flame or hot bitumen.

Where is it used?

Below-ground (BS 8102 tanking) and structural waterproofing – basement raft slabs and retaining walls, lift/elevator pits, foundations, ground-bearing slabs, subways, water-retaining structures and podium decks.

Why use it?

It self-adheres to primed concrete with no torch or boiler, lays fast as a uniform-thickness factory membrane, resists hydrostatic head up to about 5 bar, and stretches over 600% to bridge shrinkage cracks – a safer, cleaner alternative to torch-on felt.

How is it applied?

Prime the float-finished, dry concrete with Fosroc Proofex Tackcoat / Tackcoat WB, peel the silicone release paper, press the membrane onto the tack-primed substrate with side and end laps, detail corners and junctions, then protect with Fosroc Protection Board or a screed before backfilling.

About Fosroc Proofex GPE

Fosroc Proofex GPE is a member of the Proofex family of self-adhesive bituminous sheet membranes used for below-ground and structural waterproofing. In construction terms it is a “cold-applied tanking membrane”: a factory-made laminate of polymer-modified bitumen carrying a tough polyethylene (HDPE/PE) surface film on the face and a self-adhesive compound protected by a silicone release paper on the back. An internal fibreglass mat (around 100 g/m2) gives the sheet dimensional stability and tear resistance so it can be handled and lapped on site without distorting.

For Indian contractors, consultants and architects, the key appeal is that Proofex GPE installs without any flame, torch or hot bitumen. On a crowded basement or a confined lift pit, eliminating the LPG torch removes a real fire risk and lets the crew lay membrane immediately, in any weather window, without waiting for boilers. The membrane goes down at a controlled, uniform thickness – unlike hand-applied bitumen coatings, which vary wildly – so the specifier gets a predictable, repeatable barrier across the whole structure.

Functionally, Proofex GPE provides a fully-bonded vapour-proof and waterproof envelope for buried concrete. Being fully bonded (rather than loose-laid) is important: water cannot track laterally between membrane and concrete, so a single puncture stays local instead of flooding the whole tanking. The system is completed with Fosroc accessories – Proofex Tackcoat primer, Proofex Corner Pieces for internal/external angles, and Proofex Protection Board to shield the laid membrane from UV and from mechanical damage during backfilling. Space Arc Engineering supplies Proofex GPE together with these companion products as a single specified system rather than a loose roll, which is how it is intended to perform.

The technical insight

The performance of Proofex GPE comes from a three-layer design working together. The polymer-modified bitumen is the waterproofing core – polymers (typically APP/SBS-type modifiers) raise the softening point and, crucially, give the compound very high extensibility, quoted in excess of 600% elongation to ASTM D412. That elongation is what lets the membrane bridge live shrinkage and settlement cracks (the sister Proofex GP is rated for crack-bridging of about 1.5 mm) without splitting. The fibreglass reinforcement carries the tensile load – the membrane reaches roughly 4 MPa tensile strength – so the bitumen is not relied on for structural integrity. The outer polyethylene film is the wearing/printing surface that resists puncture and abrasion and gives a clean face to lap and bond onto.

The single most misunderstood point on site is the primer. Proofex GPE is “self-adhesive” but it is NOT a peel-and-stick onto bare concrete – the bond is developed against a Proofex Tackcoat (or water-based Tackcoat WB) tack coat that must be applied and allowed to go tack-free first. Per Fosroc guidance for this membrane family, substrates left more than 24 hours must be re-primed, and above about 35 C the solvent-based Tackcoat is preferred over the WB grade. Bonded against a correctly primed, float-finished, dry substrate, the membrane resists a hydrostatic head of around 5 bar (roughly 50 m water column) – more than adequate for typical Indian basement water-table conditions – provided laps, corners and the membrane-to-concrete adhesion are sound. Because it is fully bonded, detailing (laps, upstands, corner pieces, pipe penetrations) – not the sheet itself – is where failures originate.

Where it is used

  • Basement tanking – raft slabs and retaining walls of residential, commercial and mixed-use structures (BS 8102 below-ground waterproofing)
  • Lift / elevator pits and machine pits where standing water and hydrostatic pressure are a constant risk
  • Foundations, pile caps and ground-bearing slabs requiring a vapour-proof and damp-proof barrier
  • Retaining walls and earth-retaining structures subject to ground water
  • Subways, underpasses, tunnels and other buried civil-engineering structures
  • Podium decks, planter boxes and buried slabs (with appropriate protection and screed)
  • Water-retaining and water-excluding structures as a continuous tanking layer

Key advantages

  • Cold-applied and self-adhesive – no torch, flame, LPG or hot bitumen, removing fire risk in basements and confined lift pits
  • Fast, all-weather application – membrane can be laid as soon as the primer is tack-free, with no boiler or heating time
  • Uniform factory thickness (approx. 1.5-1.6 mm) gives a consistent, predictable barrier unlike hand-applied bitumen coatings
  • Very high elongation (>600%, ASTM D412) bridges shrinkage and settlement cracks in the structure
  • Fully bonded to the substrate, so water cannot migrate laterally and any damage stays localised
  • Resists high hydrostatic pressure (around 5 bar / ~50 m head), suitable for deep basements and high water tables
  • Fibreglass-reinforced for tear resistance and dimensional stability during handling and lapping
  • Complete system available – Proofex Tackcoat primer, Corner Pieces and Protection Board from one source

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a standalone peel-and-stick – requires a Proofex Tackcoat / Tackcoat WB primer and a correctly prepared, dry, float-finished substrate to develop adhesion
  • Adhesion is temperature-sensitive: above ~35 C the solvent-based Tackcoat is preferred, and very cold weather slows the self-adhesive bond
  • Substrates left more than 24 hours after priming must be re-primed before the membrane is applied
  • Must be protected promptly with Protection Board or a screed – it is vulnerable to UV and to mechanical/puncture damage during backfilling
  • Performance depends heavily on lap, corner and penetration detailing; poor workmanship at junctions is the usual cause of leaks
  • Not a wearing surface or a UV-stable exposed-roof membrane on its own; it is a buried/protected tanking system
  • Cannot be applied over wet, frosty, dusty or contaminated concrete, or over surfaces with laitance or projecting nibs

Selection & best practice

Treat Proofex GPE as a system, not a roll. Float-finish the concrete, remove laitance, nibs and contamination, and ensure the surface is dry and frost-free. Apply Proofex Tackcoat (use solvent-based above ~35 C, Tackcoat WB otherwise) and let it go fully tack-free; re-prime any area left longer than 24 hours. Pre-detail all internal and external corners, wall/floor junctions (with a sand/cement fillet) and pipe penetrations using Proofex Corner Pieces before rolling the main sheets. Peel the silicone release paper and press the membrane down firmly to expel all air pockets, maintaining adequate side and end laps and rolling laps to a continuous bond. Stagger end laps and shingle the membrane so it drains with the water flow. Protect the laid membrane immediately with Fosroc Protection Board or a sand/cement screed before any backfilling, and never leave it exposed to UV or site traffic. Always work to the current region-specific Fosroc TDS and have Space Arc’s technical team review the waterproofing detail drawings before mobilising.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Proofex GPE applied with a torch like felt?
No. Proofex GPE is cold-applied and self-adhesive – there is no torch, flame or hot bitumen. The sheet bonds to a Proofex Tackcoat-primed substrate after the silicone release paper is peeled off, which makes it much safer in basements and lift pits.
Does Proofex GPE need a primer?
Yes. Although it is self-adhesive, it must be applied onto a Proofex Tackcoat or Tackcoat WB primer that has been allowed to dry tack-free. Use the solvent-based Tackcoat above about 35 C, and re-prime any area left longer than 24 hours before laying the membrane.
How much water pressure can it withstand?
Proofex GPE resists a hydrostatic head of around 5 bar (roughly 50 m water column) when fully bonded to a sound, correctly primed substrate – more than enough for typical Indian basement and high-water-table conditions, provided laps and corners are detailed correctly.
What thickness and roll size does it come in?
It is a nominal 1.5-1.6 mm thick membrane supplied in rolls 1 m wide by 15 m long. The factory-controlled thickness gives a far more uniform barrier than hand-applied bitumen coatings.
Where is Proofex GPE typically used?
It is a below-ground (BS 8102 tanking) membrane for basement slabs and retaining walls, lift pits, foundations, ground slabs, retaining walls and buried civil structures such as subways. It is always protected by Protection Board or a screed and is not an exposed-roof membrane.
How is Proofex GPE protected after installation?
The laid membrane must be protected promptly from UV and from mechanical damage during backfilling using Fosroc Proofex Protection Board or a sand/cement screed. Corners and junctions are pre-detailed with Proofex Corner Pieces before the main sheets are laid.

How we position Fosroc Proofex GPE

Within the Fosroc waterproofing range, Proofex GPE sits in the self-adhesive, cold-applied bituminous membrane segment alongside its sister product Proofex GP (a closely related cold-applied bituminous sheet) and Proofex PR-15 / Proofex Self-Adhesive grades. For projects needing a pre-applied, mechanically-keyed HDPE membrane cast against the structure (blindside, no-primer situations), Fosroc’s Proofex Engage is the more appropriate choice; for liquid-applied or injection systems Fosroc offers Brushbond and the Proofex 3000 range. Proofex GPE is best specified where a fully-bonded, flame-free post-applied tanking sheet is wanted on accessible primed concrete. Against the wider Indian market it competes directly with Sika’s self-adhesive bituminous membranes (e.g. SikaBit / Sika Bituseal lines), STP Limited’s self-adhesive membranes (Polyseal / SAM range), Pidilite Dr. Fixit’s self-adhesive membranes, and MBS/Tremco-type bituminous membranes – so the practical differentiator is system completeness and supervised detailing, not just the sheet. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplies Proofex GPE as a complete specified system with Proofex Tackcoat primer, Corner Pieces and Protection Board, and provides the on-site detailing support that determines whether a tanking membrane actually performs. Buyers should confirm the exact current grade, thickness and roll specification against the latest region-specific Fosroc technical data sheet at the time of order.
