Fosroc Proofex ORF
FM-approved reinforced synthetic TPO/FPA single-ply membrane for exposed flat roofs, green roofs and cool roofs — loose-laid and hot-air welded for durable, plasticiser-free above-ground waterproofing.
What is it?
A reinforced synthetic thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO/FPA) single-ply waterproofing membrane from Fosroc, certified to FM 4470, supplied in rolls and joined by hot-air welding to form a continuous loose-laid roof waterproofing system.
Where is it used?
Exposed flat and sloping roofs, green/garden roofs, ballasted and cool (white) roofs, and other above-ground building envelopes where a long-life, root- and UV-resistant single-ply membrane is required.
Why use it?
It delivers welded, fully homogeneous seams (no adhesive joints to fail), high resistance to UV, weathering and root penetration, and is free of plasticisers so it will not embrittle over time — a durable alternative to PVC and built-up bituminous systems.
How is it applied?
The membrane is rolled out loose over the prepared deck or insulation, mechanically or ballast-restrained at perimeters and penetrations, with adjacent sheets overlapped a minimum of 50 mm and hot-air welded (Leister-type automatic or hand tools) into a single watertight skin.
About Fosroc Proofex ORF
Fosroc Proofex ORF is a reinforced synthetic single-ply waterproofing membrane manufactured from a thermoplastic polyolefin / flexible polypropylene alloy (TPO/FPA). The base polymer is produced by blending uncured ethylene-propylene rubber into a polypropylene matrix, which gives the finished sheet a rare combination of mechanical toughness and high flexibility without relying on plasticisers. Because there are no plasticisers to migrate or leach out over time, the membrane retains its flexibility and weldability for decades rather than gradually hardening and cracking — a common failure mode of older PVC and bitumen-based roofing. The “R” in ORF denotes the reinforced grade: an internal reinforcement carrier (polyester scrim) is embedded within the sheet to provide dimensional stability, puncture resistance and a high-quality aesthetic finish suited to visible roof areas.\n\nProofex ORF is positioned squarely as an above-ground, exposed-roof solution. Fosroc markets it for green and garden roofs, flat and sloping roofs, and cool-roof applications, with a white grade available specifically for solar-reflective cool-roof duty. The membrane is FM 4470 approved (the Factory Mutual standard for single-ply roof membranes covering wind uplift, fire and hail performance) and is recognised under LEED SS10 v4.1, making it a credible specification choice for green-rated and institutional projects in India. It carries roughly 8% recycled content, is non-toxic, contains zero VOCs, and emits no toxic fumes when welded.\n\nIn practice, ORF is supplied as a loose-laid system: the sheets are unrolled over the deck or thermal insulation, restrained at perimeters and penetrations, and the laps are fused by hot-air welding rather than glued. One important practical advantage Fosroc highlights is that no separation geotextile is required at the interface with EPS (expanded polystyrene) insulation — the membrane is chemically compatible with EPS, simplifying warm-roof and inverted build-ups. For Indian contractors and consultants, ORF sits within Fosroc’s wider Proofex TPO family (OGP standard, ORG reinforced, OFB fleece-backed) and shares the same ancillary kit — metal termination strips, preformed corners, pipe hats and adhesives — so it integrates cleanly into a fully engineered, single-source roofing specification.
The technical insight
The decisive technical feature of Proofex ORF is that it is a welded, plasticiser-free system. Adjacent sheets are joined by hot-air welding — Fosroc’s TPO range achieves reliable seams over a broad temperature window, with hand-weld trials typically run at a 40 mm nozzle width, ~350 degC and ~2 m/min, and automatic equipment operating up to 650 degC and 12 m/min. A correctly executed weld fuses the two TPO layers into one continuous, monolithic material, so the seam is as strong and watertight as the membrane body itself; there are no cold-applied adhesives or tapes at the laps that can creep or de-bond. The minimum single-weld overlap is 50 mm (double-weld 2 x 10 mm for liner work). Because the alloy contains no plasticisers, its chemistry stays “clean”: the surface is far less affected by dust and airborne pollutants than traditional membranes, and it can still be welded after long outdoor exposure — a genuine benefit on slow-moving Indian sites where membrane may sit exposed for weeks before adjoining works are welded. The embedded polyester reinforcement gives the sheet dimensional stability and resistance to point-load punctures, while the polyolefin base provides intrinsic UV, weathering and root resistance, allowing ORF to be left fully exposed on cool roofs or buried beneath soil on green roofs without a separate root barrier.
Where it is used
- Exposed (fully weathered) flat-roof waterproofing on RCC, steel and lightweight-concrete decks
- Green roofs and garden roofs where root resistance is mandatory
- Cool / solar-reflective roofs using the white grade to reduce heat ingress and roof-surface temperature
- Sloping and curved roofs of commercial, institutional and industrial buildings
- Ballasted and inverted (protected-membrane) roof build-ups, including over EPS insulation without a separation layer
- Podium decks and terraces forming part of an above-ground waterproofing scheme
- LEED and green-rated projects requiring low-VOC, recycled-content single-ply membranes
Key advantages
- FM 4470 approved single-ply membrane — independent assurance of wind-uplift, fire and hail performance
- Hot-air welded seams create homogeneous, fully watertight joints with no adhesives or tapes to fail
- Reinforced (polyester carrier) grade gives dimensional stability, puncture resistance and a clean aesthetic finish
- No plasticisers — the membrane will not embrittle, shrink or leach over time, giving long service life
- Intrinsic resistance to UV, weathering and root penetration, suitable for exposed and green-roof duty
- Plasticiser-free chemistry stays weldable even after prolonged outdoor exposure and surface soiling
- Environmentally favourable: ~8% recycled content, zero VOC, non-toxic, LEED SS10 v4.1 recognised, recyclable
- Loose-laid installation is fast and needs no separation geotextile against EPS insulation
- White cool-roof grade available to cut roof-surface temperature and air-conditioning load
- Backed by a full Fosroc ancillary kit (metal strips, corners, pipe hats, fixings) and Pan-India technical support
Limitations & considerations
- Installation requires hot-air welding equipment and trained, experienced applicators — not a brush- or roller-applied DIY product
- Weld quality is process-sensitive: temperature, speed and pressure must be trial-set for site conditions and every seam probed once cooled
- As a loose-laid system it depends on correct perimeter mechanical fixing or ballast and an accurate wind-uplift fixing calculation
- Designed for above-ground / exposed roofing — it is not the below-ground, pre-applied or gas-barrier product (see Proofex Engage for that duty)
- Should not be installed in wet weather (rain, fog, snow) or below 5 degC without special precautions, and the deck must be dry, clean and free of sharp projections
- Country-specific datasheet values (exact thickness, tensile, elongation, roll dimensions) should be confirmed against the current local Fosroc TDS for the project
- Membrane left exposed must be welded clean; heavily oxidised or contaminated surfaces need solvent-wiping or light abrasion before welding
Selection & best practice
Treat ORF as a fully engineered single-ply system, not just a roll of membrane. Begin with a wind-uplift fixing calculation (building height, location, exposure, deck type) to set perimeter and field fixing density, and ensure the deck or insulation is dry, clean and free of nail heads, concrete nibs and sharp debris. Do not lay or weld in rain, fog or snow, or below 5 degC, without approved precautions. Unroll sheets without tension, stagger end-laps, and maintain a minimum 50 mm overlap for hot-air welding; run preliminary weld trials on offcuts to fix the correct temperature/speed/pressure for the day’s conditions before production welding. Favour automatic welding equipment for field seams and reserve hand welding for details and corners, keeping the roller and nozzle at a consistent 45-degree angle and applying pressure as heat is applied. At T-joints recess the seam edge (8 mm brass roller) to break any capillary path. Detail penetrations and upstands with the matching Fosroc ancillaries — Proofex pipe hats, internal/external corners and metal termination strips sealed with Nitoseal MS60 — rather than improvised flashings. Finally, after the membrane has cooled to ambient, probe every seam the same day and patch any defect immediately with welded new material lapped at least 50 mm beyond the fault. Always work to the current country-specific Fosroc datasheet and method statement, and involve Space Arc Engineering’s technical team for system selection and applicator support.

How we position Fosroc Proofex ORF
Within the Fosroc range, Proofex ORF is the reinforced, exposed-roof member of the Proofex TPO/FPA family. Its closest siblings are Proofex OGP (the standard non-reinforced TPO membrane in 1.2-2.0 mm grades), Proofex ORG (a reinforced grade often specified for podiums, parking decks and potable-water contact) and Proofex OFB (a fleece-backed grade for fully bonded build-ups using Proofex OFB Adhesive). All share the same welding technique and ancillary kit — Proofex Metal Strip, internal/external corners, pipe hats and Nitoseal MS60 sealant — so they can be combined within one roof. For a fundamentally different duty — below-ground, pre-applied, gas-resistant tanking — the correct Fosroc product is Proofex Engage, not ORF. Against the wider Indian market, ORF competes with established single-ply and reinforced membranes such as Sika’s Sikaplan / Sarnafil FPO-TPO membranes, mapei and Renolit lines, and reinforced systems offered by STP Limited; for liquid-applied or torch-on alternatives, contractors often weigh it against Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and MBS (My Building Solutions) bituminous and PU membranes. ORF’s differentiators are its FM 4470 approval, plasticiser-free chemistry, homogeneous welded seams, root resistance and EPS compatibility. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply Proofex ORF alongside the full Fosroc waterproofing system and provide specification and applicator support — always working to the current country-specific datasheet, which should be referenced for exact thickness, roll dimensions and tested property values on any given project.
