Fosroc Proofex Protection Board
A tough, rot-proof protection board that shields applied waterproofing membranes from impact, abrasion and puncture during backfilling and site trafficking.
What is it?
Fosroc Proofex Protection Board is a sacrificial, factory-made board laid over a completed waterproofing membrane to absorb mechanical damage before backfill or screed is placed. It is available as a bitumen-impregnated fibre board (typically 3 mm, 2 m x 1 m) and as Proofex Protection Board PP, a 2.5 mm impact-resistant polypropylene sheet (1.83 m x 1.22 m).
Where is it used?
On below-ground structures across India: basement retaining walls, raft and podium slabs, water-retaining tanks, tunnels, lift pits and buried roofs, wherever a Proofex membrane is exposed to backfill or site traffic before being covered.
Why use it?
Membranes can survive curing but still be torn or punctured by sharp backfill, reinforcement, scaffolding and wheelbarrow traffic. The protection board takes that abuse, preserving the integrity of the waterproofing system that is otherwise impossible to inspect once buried.
How is it applied?
Fixed to the clean, dry, fully cured membrane using compatible adhesive, sealant or double-sided tape applied at roughly 400 mm centres; boards are butt-jointed and the joints taped before backfilling or screeding proceeds.
About Fosroc Proofex Protection Board
Fosroc Proofex Protection Board belongs to the Proofex family of below-ground waterproofing products. It is not a waterproofing layer in itself, it is a protection layer, a deliberately tough, replaceable board placed over the finished membrane so that the membrane reaches its design life intact. On a typical basement or buried structure, the sequence runs blinding, primer, Proofex membrane, protection board, then backfill or protective screed. Without the board, the first load of angular backfill or a single dropped reinforcement bar can perforate an otherwise sound membrane, and because the defect sits behind retaining walls or under slabs, it is effectively un-repairable and only shows up later as ingress.
Two distinct constructions are sold under the Proofex Protection Board name and it matters which one a project specifies. The traditional board is a bitumen-impregnated fibreboard, commonly 3 mm thick in 2 m x 1 m sheets, valued for being rot-proof, dimensionally stable and having low water absorption. The newer Proofex Protection Board PP is a 2.5 mm impact-resistant polypropylene sheet (1.83 m x 1.22 m) that also offers drainage and filtering capacity and resistance to chemicals present in soil. The bitumen board is the workhorse for general membrane protection; the PP board suits situations where chemical resistance, a clean separating layer or some drainage function is wanted. Both are light, easily cut on site and handled by a single operative.
The board is designed to work with Fosroc’s loose-laid and self-adhesive membranes, most commonly Proofex 3000, and with hot-applied and liquid systems where a separating protection layer is called for. For Indian contractors the appeal is practical: it removes the temptation to improvise protection with sand-cement screeds or scrap material that may itself damage the membrane, and it gives consultants a named, specifiable product line on the bar bending and waterproofing schedule.
The technical insight
The engineering value of a protection board is in the layer logic, not in any single number. Once a structure is backfilled, the waterproofing membrane is permanently hidden and cannot be inspected, tested or economically repaired, so the protection board is the cheapest insurance on the whole package. The bitumen-impregnated board carries that role through low water absorption and full rot resistance, meaning it will not swell, decompose or feed the membrane into the surrounding soil over decades in a damp below-ground environment. The PP variant adds a dimbasional, chemically inert barrier that also drains, useful where hydrostatic head and aggressive ground chemistry are both in play. A critical detail many site teams miss is adhesion timing and substrate condition: the board must go onto a fully cured, clean and dry membrane, fixed at roughly 400 mm centres with a compatible adhesive or tape so it stays put on vertical faces until backfill arrives, with butt joints taped to stop fines migrating behind it. Get the fixing pattern wrong and boards slump or peel off retaining walls before the soil holds them, leaving the membrane exposed exactly where compaction loads are highest.
Where it is used
- Protecting Proofex 3000 and other loose-laid membranes on basement retaining walls before backfilling
- Covering membrane on raft slabs and podium decks against reinforcement, scaffolding and wheelbarrow traffic
- Shielding waterproofing on buried roofs and planter boxes prior to overburden
- Protecting tanking on water-retaining structures, lift pits and tunnels
- Providing a clean separating layer between the membrane and a protective screed
- Drainage and protection (PP variant) on below-ground walls subject to ground water and soil chemicals
Key advantages
- Rot-proof and durable, so protection lasts as long as the buried membrane it covers
- Low water absorption (bitumen board), avoiding swelling in damp below-ground conditions
- Tough impact, puncture and abrasion resistance against angular backfill and site traffic
- Lightweight, easily cut and handled by a single operative, speeding installation
- Suitable for both vertical and horizontal surfaces with simple adhesive, sealant or tape fixing
- PP variant adds chemical resistance plus drainage and filtering capacity
- Part of a single-source Fosroc Proofex system, simplifying specification and warranty
Limitations & considerations
- It is a protection layer only, not a waterproofing membrane; it does not stop water on its own
- Must be fixed to a fully cured, clean, dry membrane or it will slump or peel on vertical faces
- Bitumen and PP variants differ in thickness, size and properties; the wrong one may not suit chemical or drainage needs
- Butt joints must be taped, otherwise fines can migrate behind the board during backfill
- Not a substitute for careful backfill control; very large or angular rock fill still needs site supervision
- Regional pack sizes and exact specs vary by market, so confirm the current India datasheet before ordering
Selection & best practice
Allow the Proofex membrane to cure fully, then check the surface is clean and dry before fixing boards. Apply compatible adhesive, sealant or double-sided tape at roughly 400 mm centres, pressing boards firmly to vertical faces and butting sheets tightly. Tape all joints to prevent fines migrating behind the board. Backfill promptly and in controlled lifts using well-graded material, avoiding dropping sharp rock directly against the board. Confirm the correct variant (bitumen-impregnated versus PP) with the consultant against the project’s chemical, drainage and loading conditions, and order against the current India datasheet.

How we position Fosroc Proofex Protection Board
Proofex Protection Board sits firmly in the protection-layer slot of Fosroc’s below-ground portfolio and is best specified together with the membrane it guards, typically Proofex 3000, or self-adhesive systems such as Proofex Engage and Proofex Torchseal where a separating board is appropriate. It is complementary to, not a competitor of, those membranes and to drainage products in the range. In the Indian market, contractors weighing alternatives will encounter Sika’s protection and drainage boards (such as the SikaPlan and Sika drainage range), STP Limited’s protection layers used with their Hyfix/Trocal systems, and protection or drainage composites from MBS (myk Laticrete). Dr. Fixit, strong in liquid-applied and admixture waterproofing, is more often chosen for the membrane itself than for a dedicated protection board. The honest position is that all these protection boards do a similar mechanical job, and selection usually follows the membrane already specified and single-source warranty preferences rather than dramatic performance differences. Where a Fosroc Proofex membrane is already on the drawings, the matched Fosroc protection board is the logical, compatibility-assured choice, and Space Arc Engineering can supply both as a system.
