Fosroc Proofex 13
A 3 mm cold-applied, self-adhesive bituminous membrane reinforced with a 150 g/m² polyester mat — fast, torch-free below-ground waterproofing for basements, foundations and retaining structures.
What is it?
A multi-ply, cold-applied self-adhesive waterproofing membrane built from an elastic bitumen compound internally reinforced with a 150 g/m² non-woven polyester mat and finished with a smooth top film. It is 3 mm thick and bonds to primed concrete without any torch or open flame.
Where is it used?
Below-ground and tanking applications — basement raft slabs and retaining walls, foundations, lift pits, podiums, water-retaining structures and buried concrete elements that need protection from ground moisture and hydrostatic damp.
Why use it?
It delivers a continuous, factory-controlled 3 mm waterproof barrier without naked flames, making it faster and safer to lay than torch-on felt while resisting puncture during follow-on trades and back-filling.
How is it applied?
Concrete is cleaned and primed with a compatible Fosroc primer; the release film is peeled and the self-adhesive sheet is rolled onto the substrate, with side and end laps formed using the factory-placed selvedge and firmly pressed down to exclude air.
About Fosroc Proofex 13
Fosroc Proofex 13 is a cold-applied, self-adhesive bituminous waterproofing membrane engineered for below-ground and tanking work where a fast, flame-free system is preferred over traditional torch-on felts. Structurally it is a multi-ply sheet: an elastic, polymer-rich bitumen compound is internally reinforced with a 150 g/m² non-woven polyester mat and finished with a smooth surface film, giving a nominal 3 mm thickness across the roll. The underside carries a quick-release film that is simply peeled back during application, exposing the self-adhesive bitumen that bonds firmly to a primed concrete substrate.
For contractors and consultants in India, the appeal of Proofex 13 is practical. Basement and foundation waterproofing is frequently on the critical path of a project, and anything that removes LPG torches, gas cylinders and hot-work permits from a congested site speeds up the programme and reduces fire risk. Because the membrane is factory-made to a controlled thickness, the waterproof barrier does not depend on an applicator judging the spread of a liquid coating or the flame on a torch — every square metre carries the same engineered bitumen film and the same polyester reinforcement. The selvedge lap is positioned during manufacture so that overlaps are consistent and the bond between adjacent sheets is reliable.
The polyester reinforcement is the heart of the product. It gives the membrane dimensional stability so it does not stretch or neck during handling, and it provides genuine puncture and tear resistance — important on real sites where reinforcement steel, scaffold and back-fill aggregate all threaten a freshly laid membrane before the protscreed or protection board goes down. The elastic bitumen matrix accommodates the minor movement and settlement typical of green concrete while remaining fully bonded.
Proofex 13 sits in the Fosroc Proofex family alongside torch-applied sheets such as Proofex Torchseal, the HDPE pre-applied membranes (Proofex Engage, Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P) used under raft slabs, and liquid systems such as Proofex LM. Space Arc Engineering supplies Proofex 13 together with the correct Fosroc primer, protection boards, jointing detail materials and trained applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, so the membrane is specified, supplied and installed as a complete, warrantable system rather than as a loose roll.
The technical insight
The performance logic of Proofex 13 is composite-membrane behaviour: the bitumen compound provides the waterproofing and self-adhesion, while the 150 g/m² non-woven polyester mat embedded within it supplies tensile strength, puncture resistance and dimensional stability. This is fundamentally different from an unreinforced liquid coating, where film integrity depends entirely on applied wet-film thickness and operator consistency, and different again from a torch-on felt, where the bond quality depends on flame control. Here the 3 mm thickness and the reinforcement are fixed at the factory, so the in-situ variable reduces to surface preparation and lap pressure. The cold self-adhesive bond also avoids the thermal degradation of bitumen that over-torching can cause. As a damp-proofing and tanking membrane, Proofex 13 is designed to resist ground moisture and damp pressure when correctly lapped and protected; for structures under significant continuous hydrostatic head, the membrane must always be detailed as a fully sealed, lapped envelope with kerbs, fillets and penetrations addressed per the project-specific TDS. Exact tensile, elongation, lap-shear and standards (IS/ASTM/BS/EN) values vary by production specification and should be read from the current Fosroc Proofex 13 technical data sheet for the supply region before a method statement is finalised.
Where it is used
- Basement raft slabs and retaining walls (external tanking) on primed concrete
- Foundations, plinths, pile caps and buried concrete elements
- Lift pits and machine pits requiring damp and water exclusion
- Podium decks, planters and buried slabs over occupied space
- Water-retaining and water-excluding concrete structures (with full lapped detailing)
- Protection of concrete from ground moisture and aggressive damp in below-ground zones
- Refurbishment and re-waterproofing where flame-free hot-work-free application is mandated
Key advantages
- Cold applied and self-adhesive — no torch, no LPG cylinders, no hot-work permits, lower fire risk on site
- Fast to lay, helping keep basement and foundation waterproofing off the critical path
- Factory-controlled 3 mm thickness gives a consistent, engineered waterproof film across every roll
- 150 g/m² non-woven polyester reinforcement delivers good puncture and tear resistance during follow-on trades and back-fill
- Excellent dimensional stability — the sheet does not neck or distort during handling
- Factory-placed selvedge lap gives consistent, reliable overlaps between sheets
- Good adhesion to primed concrete substrates
- Backed by Fosroc’s wider Proofex system — compatible primers, protection boards and detailing materials
Limitations & considerations
- Requires a properly cleaned, sound and primed concrete substrate; bond quality on dusty, damp or unprimed surfaces is unreliable
- Self-adhesion is temperature-sensitive — very cold conditions reduce initial tack and very hot surfaces can soften the sheet, so site temperature must be managed
- Laps must be firmly pressed to exclude air; poorly rolled overlaps are the most common cause of leaks
- Needs a protection layer (protection board or screed) before back-filling, blockwork or follow-on trades to avoid puncture
- As a bituminous membrane it is not a UV-stable exposed-roofing finish; it is intended to be covered/buried
- Not a substitute for engineered drainage or sound structural concrete — it manages damp and moisture, not a design defect in the structure
- Exact tensile, elongation, lap-shear and standards data must be taken from the current region-specific Fosroc TDS, not assumed
Selection & best practice
Treat Proofex 13 as a system, not a single product. Start with sound, cured concrete: remove laitance, dust, oil and projecting nibs, fill blowholes and form smooth coved fillets at all wall-to-slab junctions. Apply the recommended Fosroc primer at the specified rate and let it dry to a tacky finish before laying. Work in suitable temperatures, peel the release film progressively and roll the membrane onto the substrate, pressing out air as you go. Lap every joint using the factory selvedge with adequate side and end overlaps, and firmly roller all laps and corners. Detail penetrations, pipes and construction joints with the matching Fosroc detail materials, and install a protection board or protective screed before back-filling or follow-on work. Always work to the current project-specific Fosroc Proofex 13 technical data sheet and method statement, and use Fosroc-trained applicators — Space Arc Engineering can supply both the full material kit and the applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Proofex 13
Within the Fosroc range, Proofex 13 occupies the cold-applied, self-adhesive sheet-membrane slot for below-ground tanking. It is the flame-free alternative to torch-on sheets such as Proofex Torchseal 3P/4P, complements the pre-applied HDPE systems (Proofex Engage, Fosroc Membrane HDPE-P) used under raft slabs, and is often paired with liquid systems like Proofex LM for awkward details, plus Fosroc primers and protection boards to form a complete system. Against the wider Indian market it competes with Sika’s self-adhesive and SikaShield bituminous membranes, STP Ltd’s self-adhesive/APP membranes, MBS (My Build Store) and Pidilite’s Dr. Fixit bituminous and liquid waterproofing lines. Sheet products like Proofex 13 win where a controlled factory thickness, polyester-reinforced puncture resistance and torch-free installation matter most — typically large basement and foundation areas under hot-work or fire-risk constraints. Liquid systems (Dr. Fixit, Proofex LM) remain preferable for highly detailed geometry, and pre-applied HDPE membranes are the choice for blindside / under-slab situations where the membrane is cast against. Space Arc Engineering specifies the right combination for each project rather than defaulting to a single product, and supplies and installs it with authorised Fosroc backing across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
