Fosroc Proofex DP200
Studded HDPE drained-cavity former that protects and drains buried walls, podiums and buried roof waterproofing across building and civil engineering structures.
What is it?
A lightweight, flexible membrane formed from a studded (cuspated/honeycomb) high-density polyethylene sheet that creates a permanent drainage and air gap against a structure. It physically shields the applied waterproofing layer while channelling water away from the wall.
Where is it used?
Buried basement and retaining walls, foundations, podium and plaza decks, buried roofs, planter boxes, tunnels and reservoir walls where a waterproofing membrane needs mechanical protection and a drainage path.
Why use it?
It protects costly waterproofing from backfill damage, relieves hydrostatic and soil pressure by draining water to the perimeter drain, and ventilates damp walls, all in a single dry-fix, ready-to-install sheet that needs no curing.
How is it applied?
The sheet is fixed over the cured waterproofing or directly to the wall with the studs facing the structure (for ventilation) or outward (for drainage and protection), mechanically fastened or supported, with overlapped joints to maintain a continuous screen before backfilling.
About Fosroc Proofex DP200
Fosroc Proofex DP200 is a drained-cavity former and protection membrane built from a honeycomb, stud-formed sheet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Rather than a liquid or sheet waterproofing material, it belongs to the family of mechanical-protection and drainage geomembranes that work alongside a primary waterproofing system. The three-dimensional studded profile creates a permanent void of roughly 8 mm between the membrane and the structure, and that void does the real work: it intercepts water reaching the wall and lets it run freely down to a perimeter land drain, while the rigid HDPE skin takes the abrasion, point loads and impact that backfill, blinding and trades would otherwise inflict on the waterproofing beneath.
In Indian basement and substructure construction, the waterproofing membrane is frequently the most vulnerable layer on site. It is applied early, then left exposed to reinforcement off-cuts, shuttering, foot traffic and aggressive granular backfill before the soil goes back. Proofex DP200 is specified precisely to break that chain of damage. Laid stud-side toward the structure, it also ventilates and lets residual moisture in the wall escape; laid stud-side outward against the soil, it drains and protects. The sheet is dry-fixed, so there is no mixing, no curing and no weather window to manage, which suits the fast, sequential excavate-waterproof-backfill cycles common on NCR and metro projects.
Within Fosroc’s range it sits between the simple Proofex Protection Board and the high-capacity, geotextile-faced Proofex Sheetdrain and the geocomposite Proofex DP200G. DP200 is the studded HDPE core on its own, chosen where protection plus a basic drainage and air gap are required without the added cost of a bonded filter fabric. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator for Delhi NCR and pan-India, supplies DP200 as part of a complete Proofex basement waterproofing specification rather than as a stand-alone commodity sheet, so the protection layer is matched correctly to the membrane it is guarding.
The technical insight
The performance logic of Proofex DP200 rests on its cuspated geometry, not on any chemical action. The dimpled HDPE forms a rigid honeycomb that resists compressive creep at loads on the order of 200 kN/m2, so the drainage void stays open under backfill and long-term soil pressure instead of collapsing the way a soft fleece-only protection layer would. Because HDPE is chemically inert and rot-proof, it is unaffected by the alkalis in concrete, by dilute ground salts and sulphates, and by the bacteria and roots present in soil, giving it a design life consistent with the buried structure itself. The key specification discipline is orientation and continuity: studs toward the wall for ventilation of damp substrates, studs toward the soil for drainage and impact protection, with every sheet overlapped along the formed edge so the void and the screen remain unbroken. For genuinely high overburden, deep retaining walls or where a filtering geotextile is needed to stop fines clogging the drainage path, the correct upgrade is Proofex Sheetdrain or Proofex DP200G rather than stretching DP200 beyond its intended duty as a protection-and-light-drainage layer.
Where it is used
- Protection of applied waterproofing membranes on buried basement and retaining walls before backfilling
- Drained cavity and air gap behind below-grade walls to relieve hydrostatic and soil pressure
- Ventilation of damp or moisture-affected walls when installed with studs facing the structure
- Protection and drainage of podium decks, plaza decks and buried (inverted) roofs
- Planter boxes, landscaped terraces and roof gardens over waterproofed slabs
- Foundations, raft edges and pile caps where the membrane needs mechanical shielding
- Civil engineering structures such as tunnels, reservoirs and water-retaining walls
Key advantages
- Mechanically protects the primary waterproofing from backfill, blinding, point loads and site traffic
- Creates a permanent drainage void that channels water to the perimeter drain and reduces hydrostatic head on the wall
- Ventilates damp substrates when laid studs-to-wall, helping residual moisture escape
- Dry-fix and ready to install with no mixing, no curing and no weather-dependent application window
- Lightweight and flexible, so it conforms to wall contours and irregular profiles and is fast to fix
- Inert HDPE is rot-proof and unaffected by soil chemicals, ground salts and concrete alkalinity for long buried life
- Overlapping formed edges maintain a continuous, unbroken protection and drainage screen
- Integrates as a system layer with Fosroc Proofex and Brushbond waterproofing rather than as an unmatched generic board
Limitations & considerations
- It is a protection and drainage layer, not a waterproofing membrane in its own right, and must always be used over a primary waterproofing system
- Without a bonded filter geotextile, fines from certain backfills can migrate into the drainage void, so a graded/free-draining backfill or the geotextile-faced DP200G/Sheetdrain is preferable in silty soils
- Drainage capacity and compressive duty are lower than the heavier Proofex Sheetdrain, so very deep retaining walls or high overburden need the higher-spec product
- Correct stud orientation is critical; reversing it changes the function from drainage to ventilation and is a common site error
- Joints, terminations and penetrations must be lapped and detailed correctly or the continuity of the screen and void is lost
- Requires a functioning perimeter land drain to discharge the collected water, otherwise the void simply fills
- HDPE can be slippery and is combustible, so handling, temporary fixing and fire precautions during storage apply
Selection & best practice
Always treat Proofex DP200 as the protection layer of a system, never a substitute for waterproofing: allow the primary Fosroc membrane (such as a Proofex sheet or Brushbond coating) to fully cure and pass any flood or holiday test before fixing the board. Decide orientation deliberately at specification stage, studs to the wall for ventilation of damp substrates, studs to the soil for drainage and impact protection, and keep it consistent across the elevation. Fix from the top down, support or mechanically fasten near the head only so the waterproofing is not punctured low down, and overlap successive sheets along the formed edge to keep the void and screen continuous. Detail all internal/external corners, day-joints, pipe penetrations and the top termination, and confirm a free-draining backfill plus a working perimeter land drain so the water the membrane collects can actually discharge. Backfill in controlled lifts to avoid displacing or tearing the sheet. Where soils are silty or overburden is high, upgrade to the geotextile-faced Proofex DP200G or Proofex Sheetdrain rather than relying on DP200 alone.

How we position Fosroc Proofex DP200
Proofex DP200 is best understood as the protection-and-drainage partner to Fosroc’s primary waterproofing systems rather than a product that competes with them. On a typical Space Arc basement specification it sits over a Proofex sheet membrane or a Brushbond / Nitoproof coating, with Conplast admixtures in the concrete and a Renderoc or Nitomortar repair where needed, forming one coordinated Fosroc package. Within the Fosroc drainage range itself, DP200 is the entry point: step up to the geotextile-faced Proofex DP200G when fines in the backfill would clog a bare core, and to Proofex Sheetdrain for deep retaining walls and high overburden where greater flow and compressive capacity (up to around 550 kN/m2) are required; Proofex Protection Board remains the option where only impact protection, not drainage, is needed. Credible competing systems an Indian consultant may evaluate include Sika’s dimpled HDPE membranes (Sika Sikaplan / drainage sheets), the cavity drainage and protection sheets from STP Limited, MBS (Myk Laticrete / building chemicals) protection boards, and Dr. Fixit drainage and protection membranes from Pidilite. These alternatives are technically comparable studded-HDPE products; the practical case for DP200 is single-source system compatibility, authorised supply and applicator backing, and correct matching to the Fosroc waterproofing layer it is built to protect.
