About Fosroc Nitobond PVA15
Fosroc Nitobond PVA15 is a multipurpose bonding agent built around a polymerised polyvinyl acetate (PVA) resin emulsion. It arrives as a ready-to-use white viscous liquid that the applicator dilutes with clean water on site to suit the task in hand. Within the wider Nitobond family it sits at the value, general-purpose end of the range: where Nitobond EP is an epoxy bonding agent and Nitobond SBR is a styrene-butadiene latex for wet and structural duty, the PVA grade is the economical choice for everyday interior bonding, sealing and dust-proofing where the work will stay dry. The product is single-component and chloride-free, so there is no two-part mixing, no pot-life clock to race against, and no risk of introducing chlorides that could promote reinforcement corrosion in repair mortars. It is designed to be gauged as required, meaning the same drum serves as a thin sealing solution, a tacky priming coat and the gauge water for a cement-sand key coat, simply by changing the dilution. For contractors, consultants and procurement teams in Delhi NCR and across India, Nitobond PVA15 is the go-to bonding aid when the substrate is sound, the environment is dry, and the budget favours a proven PVA system over a higher-cost epoxy or SBR. It bonds a remarkably wide spread of common construction materials, from brick, concrete, render and stone to plasterboard, cork, wood and ceramic tiles, which is why it has become a workhorse on plastering, screeding and refurbishment sites. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Fosroc Nitobond PVA15 with technical guidance on dilution, surface preparation and the right grade for each duty.
The technical insight
The performance of a PVA bonding agent is governed by how the polymer film forms and where it is allowed to live. Nitobond PVA15 is supplied as a stable aqueous emulsion at roughly 1.0 specific gravity; as the water phase is absorbed by the substrate and evaporates, the dispersed PVA particles coalesce into a continuous, tacky film that grips both the old surface and the fresh cementitious overlay. This is why the datasheet is emphatic that the priming coat must never be allowed to dry out fully before the topping is placed: a dried PVA film loses its tack and can become a slip plane rather than a bond. The critical limitation is moisture sensitivity. PVA polymers can re-emulsify in standing water, so the parent Nitobond PVA system is explicitly not recommended as a bonding agent in continuously wet or submerged areas, where Fosroc directs users to Nitobond SBR instead. Used as an admixture, the polymer also plugs capillary porosity in the mortar matrix, which reduces water demand, improves cohesion and raises abrasion resistance, the mechanism behind its effectiveness as a floor dust-proofer and sealer. Compliance is referenced to BS 5270 (bonding agents for cementitious work) and BS 5075 for chloride content (nil), giving specifiers a recognised benchmark for a polymer bonding aid and mortar additive.
Where it is used
- Plaster and render bonding: priming tiles, dense concrete and smooth surfaces to receive gypsum, lightweight gypsum, anhydrous or cementitious plaster without hacking
- Concrete and granolithic floor repair: priming and gauging cement-sand mixes to patch cracks, holes and worn floors
- Repairs to natural and reconstructed stone using lean Portland cement mixes gauged with the polymer
- Bonding granolithic toppings and screeds to sub-concrete via a stippled key coat
- Dust-proofing and sealing friable concrete floors, screeds and lightweight blockwork
- General-purpose adhesive for brick, concrete, cork, wood, plasterboard, ceramic and quarry tiles, stone, glass and laminates
- Anti-bleed primer for overcoating bitumen surfaces with oil-based paints
- Cement admixture to improve durability, cohesion and abrasion resistance of mortars and renders
Key advantages
- Single-component liquid with no two-part mixing or pot life to manage
- Chloride-free (nil to BS 5075), so it will not introduce corrosion risk into repair mortars
- Highly versatile and economical: one product seals, primes, gauges and dust-proofs by changing dilution
- Bonds an exceptionally wide range of common construction materials
- Improves the durability, cohesion and abrasion resistance of mortars and renders
- Easily applied by brush, roller or spray with no specialist equipment
- Reduces hacking and mechanical keying when used as a plaster bonding agent
- Non-flammable and water-based for safer handling in occupied buildings
Limitations & considerations
- Not suitable as a bonding agent in continuously wet, damp or submerged areas; use Nitobond SBR or Nitobond EP instead
- PVA film can re-emulsify in standing water, so it is an interior, dry-condition product
- Priming coat must not be allowed to dry before the topping is placed or it becomes a slip plane
- Will not bond polythene, PVC or rubber
- Modified mortars should not be applied below 5C and falling, or exposed to moving water or heavy rain before final set
- Lower mechanical bond strength than epoxy (Nitobond EP) or SBR systems; not a structural bonding agent
- Short 6-month shelf life and must be protected from frost
- Highly absorbent lightweight blocks (breeze, foam, slag) require pre-soaking before sealing
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate first: saw-cut repair edges to at least 10 mm to avoid feather-edging, then clean off dust, laitance, oil, paint and loose material by scabbling or grit-blasting and confirm soundness with a pull-off test. Seal porous surfaces with a dilute 1:15 solution (increase to 1:10 on very porous backgrounds), then apply the priming coat at 1:1 and work it well into all crevices. Place the topping while the prime coat is still tacky, never dry; if it dries, re-prime and proceed only when tacky again. Gauge cement-sand key and repair mixes with a 1:3 PVA-to-water solution rather than plain water. Because the finished mortars and renders are cement-based, cure them immediately after finishing in line with good concrete practice, ideally with a Fosroc Concure curing membrane or damp hessian in harsh drying conditions. Reserve PVA15 for dry interiors only and switch to Nitobond SBR or Nitobond EP where the area will be permanently damp, wet or structurally loaded.

How we position Fosroc Nitobond PVA15
Within Fosroc’s concrete repair and rehabilitation portfolio, Nitobond PVA15 is the entry-level, dry-interior bonding agent, and it should be specified with its siblings clearly in view. Step up to Nitobond SBR (a styrene-butadiene latex) when the substrate may stay damp or where a tougher gauging admixture is wanted, and to Nitobond EP, the two-component solvent-free epoxy compliant to ASTM C881 Type II, when bond strength must exceed the tensile strength of the host concrete or when bonding onto damp surfaces under formwork. Repairs primed with PVA15 are typically completed with Fosroc Renderoc hand-placed mortars and cured with Concure curing membranes, so the products are usually quoted together. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a specifier may weigh include Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP and Pidiproof bonding aids from Pidilite, Sika Latex / SikaLatex Power and Sika MonoTop systems, MYK Laticrete and STP (Shalimar) bonding agents, and various SBR latex admixtures from regional manufacturers. For dry interior plastering, screeding and general bonding on a budget, PVA15 remains competitive; for wet, external or structural duty most engineers will, and should, move to an SBR or epoxy product. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and pan-India, can supply genuine PVA15 alongside the correct higher-performance Nitobond grade and advise on the right selection for each application.
