Fosroc Renderoc BF
One-component polymer-modified cementitious fairing coat and blowhole filler for smoothing concrete from 0 to 5 mm before protective and decorative coatings.
What is it?
A one-component, polymer-modified cementitious fairing/filler mortar that smooths concrete imperfections in the 0-5 mm range, supplied as a ready blend of powders and polymers needing only site-added water.
Where is it used?
Used on RCC structures, bridge soffits, water tanks, basements, facades and precast units in Delhi NCR and across India wherever a fair-faced finish is needed before protective coatings.
Why use it?
It fills blowholes, bug-holes and minor surface defects in one user-friendly product with no separate primer or curing agent, producing a smooth, well-bonded substrate that lets protective coatings perform as specified.
How is it applied?
Mixed at 4-6 litres water per 20 kg bag, worked into blowholes and over surfaces by steel trowel up to 5 mm, allowed to partly set, then finished smooth for vertical and overhead work.
About Fosroc Renderoc BF
Fosroc Renderoc BF is a fair-faced, one-component polymer-modified cementitious filler and reprofiling mortar developed for the cosmetic and protective preparation stage of concrete repair and rehabilitation. Its job is not structural patching but surface perfection: closing the blowholes, bug-holes, tie-bolt marks, honeycomb pockets and trowel ridges that are an unavoidable consequence of formwork and placement, so that the concrete presents a continuous, dense, fair-faced surface ready to receive a protective or decorative coating. In Fosroc’s concrete repair philosophy, Renderoc BF sits at the finishing end of the Renderoc system, complementing the heavier structural repair mortars rather than replacing them.
The material is supplied as a factory-blended dry powder of cement, graded fillers and redispersible polymers; only clean water is added on site. Once gauged it produces a smooth, cohesive, low-shrinkage mortar that can be worked into defects as thin as a feather edge and built up to a maximum of 5 mm in a single application. Because it is polymer-modified, it develops an excellent bond to sound concrete and good thermal compatibility, so the cured film moves with the substrate instead of debonding under temperature cycling. Crucially for productivity, it is self-curing in normal conditions and needs no separate bonding primer, which removes two trade steps from the typical fairing sequence.
For Indian contractors and applicators, Renderoc BF is most often specified as the final make-good layer over large concrete elevations, water-retaining structures, bridge and flyover soffits, basements and industrial floors before anti-carbonation, protective or aesthetic coatings are applied. A correctly faired surface is what allows those coatings to achieve their rated dry film thickness, opacity and barrier performance. Space Arc Engineering supplies Renderoc BF as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and can advise on the right combination of structural repair mortar plus Renderoc BF fairing coat for a given specification.
The technical insight
The defining technical role of Renderoc BF is to create a coatable, fair-faced plane, so its formulation is tuned for fine-grained workability and bond rather than high mechanical strength. As a one-component, polymer-modified cementitious mortar it is gauged at 4-6 litres of clean water per 20 kg bag (never exceeding 6 litres) and mixed for 3-5 minutes with a slow-speed (400-500 rpm) heavy-duty drill and a Fosroc mortar paddle to a homogeneous, lump-free consistency. The redispersible polymer fraction does the heavy lifting: it boosts adhesion to the prepared substrate, improves the cohesion and ‘closing’ behaviour needed to seal blowholes by steel trowel, reduces plastic shrinkage so feather edges do not craze, and self-cures the thin film without a separate curing membrane. Application is engineered for vertical and overhead surfaces in the 0 to 5 mm band, which is why a single product covers both pinhole filling and broad skim-coating. Because it is a thin fairing coat and not a load-bearing repair, it does not carry the high compressive-strength class of structural Renderoc mortars; the engineering value is bond, surface continuity and coating-readiness, not strength. Temperature governs working life and set, so Fosroc restricts use to above 5 degrees C and falling, and recommends conditioning the powder below 25 degrees C when ambient exceeds 35 degrees C, a real consideration on Indian summer sites. The two-component sister product Renderoc BF2 extends the same chemistry to a 0 to 10 mm range and adds shrinkage-crack filling, useful where a single 5 mm pass is not enough.
Where it is used
- Filling blowholes, bug-holes and pinholes in formed concrete before protective coatings
- Skim-coating and fairing concrete to receive anti-carbonation and decorative coatings
- General reprofiling over large concrete elevations and soffits up to 5 mm
- Making good tie-bolt holes, trowel marks and minor surface imperfections
- Final fair-faced finish over patch repairs made with other Renderoc mortars
- Surface preparation of water tanks, basements and STPs prior to protective lining
- Cosmetic upgrade of bridge, flyover and parking structure soffits before coating
- Smoothing precast and architectural concrete units for a uniform coatable surface
Key advantages
- One-component, ready-blended – only clean water added on site, reducing batching error
- No separate bonding primer or curing agent required, saving two trade steps and time
- Excellent bond to sound concrete with good thermal compatibility for durable adhesion
- Polymer modification gives smooth workability ideal for closing blowholes by trowel
- Designed for vertical and overhead application without sagging within the 0-5 mm range
- Produces a dense, fair-faced surface that lets protective coatings reach rated performance
- Low-shrinkage thin film resists crazing at feathered edges
- Backed in India by Space Arc Engineering as authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator
Limitations & considerations
- A fairing/filler coat only – not a structural or load-bearing repair mortar
- Maximum 5 mm per application; deeper defects need Renderoc BF2 (0-10 mm) or a structural Renderoc mortar first
- Do not exceed 6 litres of water per 20 kg bag or strength and bond suffer
- Must not be applied below 5 degrees C and falling; hot weather needs material conditioned below 25 degrees C
- Requires a sound, clean, properly prepared and pre-wetted substrate for full adhesion
- Honeycombing and structural spalling must be reinstated with a structural mortar before fairing
- Working life and set vary with temperature, substrate and wind, demanding site judgement
- Not a waterproofing membrane or a decorative finish in itself – it is a coating substrate
Selection & best practice
Treat Renderoc BF as the last step before coating, never as a structural fix. Reinstate honeycombing, spalls and deep defects first with the correct structural Renderoc mortar, then prepare the surface: remove laitance, dust and curing compounds, expose a sound profile and thoroughly pre-wet the concrete to a saturated surface-dry condition so the thin fairing coat is not starved of water. Gauge accurately at 4-6 litres per 20 kg bag (never above 6 litres) and mix 3-5 minutes at 400-500 rpm to a uniform paste. Work it firmly into blowholes by steel trowel with minimum overworking, let it partly set, then trowel smooth. Avoid application below 5 degrees C or in the heat of an Indian summer afternoon without conditioning the material; plan placement for cooler parts of the day. Confirm the faired surface is fully cured and dry before overcoating, and always cross-check the coating manufacturer’s substrate requirements. How we position Fosroc Renderoc BF
Within the Fosroc Renderoc concrete-repair system, Renderoc BF is the fairing/blowhole-filling finisher rather than a structural mortar. It is closely related to Renderoc FC (a polymer-modified pinhole filler/fairing coat) and to Renderoc BF2, the two-component version that extends the range to 0-10 mm and fills shrinkage cracks. On a typical rehabilitation, the structural reinstatement is done with mortars such as Renderoc HB (high-build hand-placed), Renderoc GP (general purpose), Renderoc S or Renderoc TG, after which Renderoc BF closes the surface for coating – so it is usually specified alongside, not instead of, those products and a Nitoprime/Nitobond preparation regime. Against competitors, the equivalent fairing-coat niche is occupied by Sika MonoTop and Sika Repair fairing/levelling mortars, MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterEmaco render and fairing coats, Dr. Fixit’s repair and skim-coat range, and STP/Pidilite cementitious surface fillers; each pairs a structural mortar with a thin fairing layer in much the same way. The honest reading is that these are technically comparable products and the right choice often comes down to system compatibility with the specified protective coating, local availability and applicator familiarity. Where Space Arc Engineering adds value is supplying genuine Fosroc Renderoc BF as an authorised distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and pan-India, and advising on the correct structural-mortar-plus-fairing-coat combination so the finished coating performs as designed.
