Fosroc Conplast R2
A chloride-free water-reducing and set-retarding admixture that extends working time, cuts water demand and lifts the strength and durability of concrete in hot conditions, large pours and fly ash mixes.
What is it?
A chloride-free liquid concrete admixture from Fosroc, based on selected hydroxycarboxylic materials, that reduces mixing water while controllably delaying the set of fresh concrete.
Where is it used?
Large monolithic pours, hot-weather concreting, ready-mix transported over long distances, semi-dry screeds, fly ash blends and roller-compacted concrete (RCC) on infrastructure and building projects across India.
Why use it?
It buys extra working time to place and finish concrete without cold joints, while the water reduction raises compressive strength at all ages and lowers permeability for better durability.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a liquid into the gauging water or directly into the mixer at a measured rate per 100 kg of cementitious material, then mixed normally; never added to dry cement or aggregate.
About Fosroc Conplast R2
Fosroc Conplast R2 is a dual-action concrete admixture that combines water reduction with controlled set retardation. It is supplied as a brown liquid based on selected hydroxycarboxylic materials and disperses instantly when added to the mixing water. Because it is chloride-free, it is safe for use in reinforced, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete where chloride-induced corrosion of steel is a concern. Conplast R2 belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Conplast R series of retarding water-reducers, the same chemistry family that has long been specified under BS 5075 Part 1 and ASTM C494 as a Type B (retarding) and Type D (water-reducing and retarding) admixture. In Indian practice this places it alongside set-retarding water-reducers covered by IS 9103. For Space Arc Engineering’s contractor and consultant clients in Delhi NCR and across India, R2 is the product to reach for when a pour needs more time and better quality at the same time, rather than a high-range superplasticiser. Its core value is two-fold. First, it lets the mix designer hold a target strength grade while either trimming cement content or holding workability higher for the same water-cement ratio. Second, the retardation extends the period during which concrete remains plastic and workable, which is exactly what large rafts, long-haul ready-mix and hot-weather placements need to avoid premature stiffening and cold joints. It is also a sensible choice for semi-dry screeds and fly ash or RCC mixes where a longer working life genuinely improves the finished result.
The technical insight
The hydroxycarboxylic chemistry in Conplast R2 works on two fronts at once. The molecules adsorb onto cement grains and temporarily slow the early hydration reactions, which is what delays initial and final set; at the same time they help deflocculate cement particles so the same workability is reached with less water. The practical consequence is a lower water-cement ratio at a given slump, and a denser, lower-permeability matrix once the concrete cures. The crucial discipline for site teams is that retardation is dose-dependent: a modest dose gives a useful extension of working life, but overdosing in cool weather or with certain cements can stretch setting times far beyond what was intended, delaying formwork striking and finishing. Because cement chemistry, ambient temperature and supplementary cementitious materials all shift the response, the only reliable way to fix a working dose is trial mixes using the actual job materials before bulk supply. Unlike calcium chloride accelerators, R2 contains no added chloride, so it does not introduce the corrosion risk that rules chloride-bearing admixtures out of reinforced and prestressed work.
Where it is used
- Large monolithic and mass-concrete pours such as rafts, foundations and water-retaining structures where cold joints must be avoided
- Hot-weather and high-ambient-temperature concreting where fresh concrete would otherwise stiffen too quickly
- Ready-mixed concrete transported over long distances or held in transit before placing
- Semi-dry concrete screeds and floor toppings that need an extended working life
- Concrete containing fly ash or other supplementary cementitious materials
- Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for pavements, dams and hardstandings
- Slip-formed elements where controlled stiffening improves the finished surface
- Reinforced, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete where chloride-free admixtures are mandatory
Key advantages
- Chloride-free, so it is safe for reinforced, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete
- Reduces mixing water at a given workability, improving compressive strength at all ages
- Produces lower-permeability, more durable concrete
- Controlled retardation extends working life and prevents cold joints in large or hot-weather pours
- Allows a target strength grade to be met at reduced cement content or higher workability
- Improves slip-forming and surface finish through controlled stiffening
- Disperses instantly in water and is simple to dose with standard dispensing equipment
- Backed by Fosroc’s BS 5075 / ASTM C494 Conplast R retarding water-reducer pedigree
Limitations & considerations
- It is a normal water-reducing retarder, not a high-range superplasticiser; for very high water reduction or self-compacting concrete a Conplast SP or Auramix-grade product is required
- Retardation is strongly dose- and temperature-sensitive; overdosing or cool weather can extend setting times excessively and delay formwork striking
- Working dose must be established by site trial mixes with the actual cement, SCMs and aggregates, as response varies with materials
- Must be added to the gauging water or wet mix, never directly to dry cement or aggregate
- Early-age strength gain can be slower because of the retardation, which matters where rapid formwork turnaround is needed
- Being water-based, it is sensitive to frost in storage and should be protected from freezing
- Numeric properties such as specific gravity, exact dosage band and pack sizes should be confirmed against the current regional Fosroc TDS before specification
Selection & best practice
Always fix the dose by trial mixes using the project’s actual cement, fly ash and aggregates, and verify setting time and strength at the expected ambient temperature before bulk ordering. Add Conplast R2 to the gauging water or into the mixer with the mixing water, never onto dry materials, and dispense it with a calibrated dispenser for consistent dosing. In hot weather, treat the retardation as a tool to manage placing and finishing windows, and in cool weather reduce the dose or expect longer setting times and later formwork striking. Keep the product off freezing exposure in storage. For any pour, request and read the current country-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the exact dosage range, specific gravity and compatibility notes, and speak to Space Arc Engineering’s technical team for mix-design support.

Industry use cases
Infrastructure & mass concrete
In bridge foundations, raft slabs and water-retaining structures, R2 keeps large pours plastic long enough to place and consolidate them in one continuous operation, eliminating cold joints while the water reduction densifies the concrete.
Ready-mix & long-haul transport
RMC plants supplying sites far from the batching plant use R2 to retain workability during transit and waiting time, so concrete arrives placeable rather than stiff, especially in Indian summer conditions.
Pavements & RCC
For roller-compacted concrete pavements and hardstandings, R2 extends the working window and helps achieve a denser, lower-permeability surface for better long-term durability.
Flooring & screeds
Semi-dry screed and topping contractors gain extended working life, giving more time to lay, level and finish large floor areas without the mix going off prematurely.
Hot-weather building works
On high-rise and commercial pours during peak summer, R2 counters rapid slump loss, helping crews place and finish concrete cleanly when ambient temperatures would otherwise force cold joints.

How we position Fosroc Conplast R2
Conplast R2 sits in the normal-range, retarding water-reducer slot of the Fosroc admixture line, not the high-performance superplasticiser tier. Within Fosroc’s own range it overlaps closely with Conplast R and Conplast RP264 (both water-reducing retarders) and contrasts with the high-range Conplast SP family (such as SP430) and Auramix products used for high water reduction or self-compacting concrete; where waterproofing rather than retardation is the goal, Conplast WL or Conplast Crystalline are the relevant Fosroc options. Against competitor lines, R2 competes with retarding water-reducers such as Sika’s Plastiment / SikaRetarder grades and Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF) MasterSet / MasterPolyheed retarders. For waterproofing-led requirements, integral admixtures from Dr. Fixit and STP are the better-known Indian alternatives, though those address permeability rather than set control. For Space Arc clients, the honest position is simple: specify Conplast R2 when the job genuinely needs extended working time plus moderate water reduction in reinforced or prestressed concrete; step up to a Conplast SP superplasticiser when high water reduction or flowing concrete is the priority; and choose a dedicated waterproofing admixture when watertightness, not set control, is the objective.
