Fosroc Conplast SP421R
Chloride-free, synthetic-polymer based retarding superplasticiser engineered for long slump retention in tropical conditions and durable high-strength concrete.
What is it?
A chloride-free, high-performance retarding superplasticiser (high-range water reducer) based on selected synthetic polymers, supplied as a brown liquid that disperses instantly in mix water. It conforms to ASTM C494 Types D and G depending on dosage.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix and site-batched concrete where extended workability is needed over long haul or placement times, hot-weather concreting, high-strength structural members, raft and pile foundations, and pumped concrete on infrastructure and high-rise projects across India.
Why use it?
It holds slump for significantly longer than conventional sulphonated melamine or naphthalene admixtures, allowing major water reduction, higher ultimate strength and lower permeability without raising cement content, even at low water-cement ratios in tropical heat.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 1.0 to 2.5 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, added to the gauging water or wet mix through a calibrated dispenser; optimum dosage is fixed by site trial mixes using the actual job materials and ambient conditions.
About Fosroc Conplast SP421R
Fosroc Conplast SP421R is a high-performance, chloride-free superplasticiser developed specifically to deliver excellent slump retention in tropical and hot-weather concreting while supporting the production of high-strength, low-permeability concrete. It is based on selected synthetic polymers and supplied as a brown liquid that disperses instantly when added to the mix water, making field dispensing straightforward. The “R” in the name reflects its built-in retarding action: rather than simply plasticising the mix and then allowing rapid slump loss, SP421R extends the period over which the concrete remains workable, which is exactly what Indian sites need when concrete must travel long distances from a batching plant, sit in transit during traffic, or be placed into deep or congested sections under high ambient temperatures. The admixture works by dispersing the fine cementitious particles so that the available water is used far more efficiently. This allows the mix designer to take water out of the mix while keeping the same workability, or to keep the water and gain a large jump in flow. The result is either a major reduction in water-cement ratio for higher strength and improved durability, or a free-flowing, easily pumped and compacted concrete that reduces placing labour. Because it is chloride-free, SP421R is safe in reinforced and prestressed concrete and does not contribute to reinforcement corrosion. For contractors, consultants and procurement teams in Delhi NCR and across India, it is a dependable choice wherever the combination of long open time and high strength is the governing requirement, and Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator.
The technical insight
Conplast SP421R functions through electrostatic and steric dispersion of cement grains. Its synthetic polymer molecules adsorb onto the cement particles, neutralising the surface charges that cause flocculation; the deflocculated particles release the water trapped between them, so that water becomes available to lubricate the mix instead of being locked in floc structures. This is why very high water reduction is achievable without bleeding or segregation. Its distinguishing characteristic versus a plain Type F superplasticiser is the retardation built into the chemistry, which is why Fosroc classifies it under ASTM C494 as Type D (water-reducing and retarding) at moderate dosage and Type G (high-range water-reducing and retarding) at higher dosage. The retarding fraction slows the early hydration reactions just enough to keep the paste mobile for an extended window, which directly translates into slump retention without continuous re-dosing. A practical point worth understanding: an overdose of roughly double the intended amount will increase retardation rather than ruin the concrete, and provided curing is adequate the ultimate strength is not impaired and is generally improved. That tolerance band is useful on site but should not be relied upon as a working margin, and the effect of overdosing is amplified when sulphate-resisting cement or supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash or GGBS are present, because these already slow early hydration. With a typical air entrainment below 2 percent additional air at normal dosage, SP421R does not significantly alter the air-void system, so it is a water-reducer first and not an air-entraining agent.
Where it is used
- High-strength structural concrete (columns, transfer girders, raft and pile foundations) where a low water-cement ratio is specified
- Hot-weather and tropical-climate concreting where rapid slump loss must be controlled
- Ready-mixed concrete requiring extended workability over long transit and haul times
- Pumped and free-flowing concrete for high-rise and infrastructure works
- Durable, low-permeability concrete for water-retaining structures, basements and marine-influenced environments
- Large-volume continuous pours where placement and compaction windows are extended
- Reinforced and prestressed concrete elements (chloride-free composition is safe for steel)
Key advantages
- Extended slump retention, holding workability far longer than conventional sulphonated melamine or naphthalene admixtures
- Enables major water-cement ratio reductions, producing high-strength concrete without excessive cement content
- Chloride-free and safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Improves cohesion and particle dispersion, minimising segregation and bleeding
- Enhances durability by increasing ultimate strength and reducing concrete permeability
- Improves pumpability and ease of placing and compaction, lowering placing labour costs
- Forgiving overdose behaviour: a double dose increases retardation without impairing ultimate strength when properly cured
- Disperses instantly in water for simple, reliable site dispensing
Limitations & considerations
- Carries a retarding effect, so it is not suited to jobs requiring rapid early strength or very fast formwork striking; a non-retarding superplasticiser such as Conplast SP430 may be preferable there
- Retardation is amplified when used with sulphate-resisting cement or fly ash/GGBS replacement, requiring trial verification of setting times
- Optimum dosage must be established by site trial mixes; published 1.0 to 2.5 litres per 100 kg range is a starting band, not a fixed figure
- Overdosing extends set times and can delay finishing if not anticipated and cured correctly
- Performance depends on mix design and material quality; it cannot compensate for poorly graded aggregates or excess water
- As a water-reducer it entrains only minimal air and is not a substitute for a dedicated air-entraining agent in freeze-thaw exposure
- Liquid admixture requires protection from freezing and correct storage to retain shelf life
Selection & best practice
Always establish the working dosage by trial mixes using the actual project cement, aggregates, supplementary materials and expected ambient temperature rather than adopting a generic figure. Where the priority is strength, start from a normal mix design and remove water while holding workability; where the priority is flow, design the mix as a pump mix and seek Fosroc mix-design guidance. Add SP421R to the gauging water or wet mix through a calibrated dispenser to ensure accurate, repeatable dosing, and never simply pour onto dry cement. Account for the inherent retardation when planning formwork striking and finishing schedules, especially if fly ash, GGBS or sulphate-resisting cement is in the mix, and confirm setting times by trial. Maintain proper curing in all cases: the ultimate strength benefit and durability gains depend on it, and curing is what protects strength even if the mix is inadvertently overdosed. Store the drums in shaded, cool conditions protected from frost, and verify shelf life and the current Technical Data Sheet with Fosroc or Space Arc Engineering before use.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mixed Concrete (RMC)
Holds slump through long plant-to-site transit in city traffic and hot ambient conditions, so concrete arrives placeable without site water addition that would otherwise wreck the water-cement ratio.
High-Rise & Infrastructure
Produces high-strength, pumpable concrete for columns, transfer structures and long vertical pumping runs where both flow retention and ultimate strength matter.
Foundations & Mass Pours
Extends the workability window for large rafts and pile caps, allowing continuous placing and compaction across long pour durations without cold joints.
Water-Retaining & Durable Structures
Lowers water-cement ratio and permeability for basements, tanks and durability-critical elements, improving long-term resistance to ingress.
Precast & Prestressed Elements
Chloride-free composition makes it safe around high-tensile strands and reinforcement while delivering the dense, high-strength matrix precast yards require.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP421R
Within the Fosroc Conplast admixture family, SP421R is the slump-retention and high-strength specialist, and it sits alongside Conplast SP430 (a high-early-strength superplasticiser for rapid strength gain), Conplast SP432 / SP500-series polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) high-performance superplasticisers for very high water reduction and self-compacting concrete, and Conplast WP421 where integral waterproofing of the mix is the goal. For most Indian projects the choice between SP421R and SP430 comes down to a single question: do you need long open time in the heat (SP421R) or fast early strength (SP430). Against competitor products, SP421R competes most directly with sulphonated naphthalene and melamine retarding superplasticisers and PCE-based retarding grades from Sika (for example the Sika ViscoCrete and Plastiment ranges), MBS / Master Builders Solutions (the MasterGlenium and earlier Rheobuild lines), Dr. Fixit / Pidilite admixtures, and STP Limited (Shalimar) concrete admixtures. PCE-based newer-generation products from these brands can offer higher water reduction at lower dosage, so where ultra-high strength or self-compacting concrete is specified a PCE grade may be the better technical fit; where the governing need is reliable, cost-effective slump retention with a forgiving overdose tolerance, SP421R remains a strong and field-proven choice backed by Fosroc’s technical advisory support. Space Arc Engineering supplies SP421R as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and can advise on selection between these grades and on trial mix design.
