Fosroc Conplast W
A set-accelerating, water-reducing concrete admixture that speeds early strength gain in cold-weather concreting and precast production.
What is it?
Fosroc Conplast W is a ready-to-use brown liquid admixture that accelerates the hydration of cement, helping concrete and mortar stiffen, set and gain early strength faster while also reducing the water needed for a given workability.
Where is it used?
Used in cold-weather concreting, precast yards needing faster mould turnaround, floor and screed work, and general unreinforced/plain concrete where rapid early strength and frost protection matter.
Why use it?
It lets work continue at low temperatures, gives added frost protection by lowering water content, allows earlier de-moulding of precast units, and improves density and compressive strength through water reduction.
How is it applied?
Added to the gauging water and mixed into the concrete or mortar at the batching stage at the manufacturer-recommended dosage; never added dry to cement and never used neat.
About Fosroc Conplast W
Fosroc Conplast W is part of the long-established Conplast range of concrete admixtures and is supplied as a brown liquid that is stirred into the mixing water before it reaches the cement. Functionally it does two jobs at once: it accelerates the early hydration of Portland cement so that the mix stiffens and develops strength sooner, and it acts as a water-reducer, cutting the free water needed to achieve a given workability. The combination is what makes it useful on Indian sites during winter pours in the north, in hill stations, and inside precast factories where every hour saved on mould occupancy improves output.
The accelerating effect is the headline benefit. By speeding the rate at which cement reacts, Conplast W brings forward the point at which fresh concrete is stiff enough to handle, finish or strip from formwork. In a precast plant this translates directly into faster mould cycles and higher daily production from the same casting beds. On in-situ work placed at low temperatures, the faster hydration helps offset the natural slowing of the cement reaction in the cold and provides a measure of frost protection, because a concrete that sets and gains strength quickly is less vulnerable to early-age freezing damage.
The single most important thing a specifier must understand about Conplast W is that it is a chloride-containing accelerator. Chloride ions are extremely effective at accelerating cement hydration, which is exactly why traditional accelerators relied on them, but they also promote corrosion of embedded steel. For this reason Fosroc itself directs that Conplast W must be replaced by Conplast NC, the chloride-free accelerating admixture, wherever there is embedded or prestressed reinforcement, where sulphate-resisting cement is used, or where steam curing is employed. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, treats this substitution rule as non-negotiable when advising clients, because getting it wrong introduces a long-term durability risk that no short-term speed gain can justify.
Used within its correct envelope, Conplast W remains a simple, economical way to manage cold-weather plain concrete and to push precast throughput, and it sits alongside Fosroc’s wider Conplast family of water-reducers, plasticisers and integral waterproofers that Space Arc supplies as a complete concrete-admixture package.
The technical insight
Conplast W works on the chemistry of cement hydration. Calcium-chloride-type accelerators increase the early rate at which tricalcium silicate (C3S) reacts with water, shortening the dormant period and bringing forward initial and final set. Faster, earlier hydration is what delivers the early strength and the practical “strip sooner” benefit. The same chloride that drives this acceleration, however, lowers the chloride threshold for depassivation of the steel passive layer, so in any steel-containing element the durability penalty outweighs the speed benefit — hence Fosroc’s instruction to switch to the chloride-free Conplast NC. The secondary water-reducing action means that for a target slump the mix can be designed with a lower water-cement ratio, which independently raises density and 28-day compressive strength and reduces segregation. Because chloride is involved, Conplast W is governed by the same accelerating-admixture standards family as the rest of the range (BS 5075 Part 1 / ASTM C494 Type C / IS 9103 type behaviour), and dosage must always be confirmed by trial mix against the actual cement, aggregates and ambient temperature rather than assumed.
Where it is used
- Cold-weather and winter concreting in North India and hill regions where ambient temperatures slow normal set
- Precast concrete production where faster mould turnaround and earlier de-moulding increase output
- Plain (unreinforced) mass and structural concrete requiring accelerated early strength
- Floor slabs, screeds and pavement sections needing earlier hardening and finishing
- Mortars for non-structural masonry and patch work where rapid stiffening is wanted
- Emergency and repair concrete in plain elements where quick set is the priority
Key advantages
- Accelerates cement hydration so concrete and mortar set and gain early strength faster
- Enables continued placing of concrete at low temperatures
- Provides additional frost protection by reducing water content and speeding hydration
- Allows earlier release from precast moulds, increasing daily production
- Reduces water content for a given workability, lowering segregation
- Increases density and compressive strength through the water-reducing action
- Supplied as a ready-to-use liquid that disperses easily in the gauging water
- Backed by authorised Fosroc supply, technical support and stock from Space Arc across Delhi NCR and Pan-India
Limitations & considerations
- Contains chloride — must NOT be used where there is embedded or prestressed steel reinforcement
- Must be replaced by chloride-free Conplast NC when sulphate-resisting cement is used
- Must be replaced by Conplast NC when steam curing is employed
- Not a waterproofing admixture — for integral waterproofing use Conplast WL or Conplast WL Xtra instead
- Over-dosing can cause excessive rapid set, flash setting or reduced ultimate strength — dosage must be trial-verified
- Acceleration of set shortens placing and finishing time, demanding good site coordination, especially in warm weather
- A liquid admixture, not a structural material — it does not replace sound mix design, curing or cover requirements
Selection & best practice
Always add Conplast W to the gauging (mixing) water, never directly to dry cement and never in neat form. Confirm the optimum dosage by trial mixes using the project’s actual cement, aggregates and expected placing temperature before bulk use, and observe Fosroc’s recommended dosage range. Critically, screen the element first: if it contains any reinforcement or prestressing steel, uses sulphate-resisting cement, or will be steam-cured, switch to chloride-free Conplast NC. Because set is accelerated, plan transport, placing, compaction and finishing to be completed well within the shortened working window, and brief the crew accordingly. Maintain normal good practice on cover, compaction and curing — acceleration is not a substitute for curing. Store the drums in their original sealed containers, in shade away from direct sun and frost, and confirm shelf life and the current technical data sheet with Space Arc before use.

Industry use cases
Precast Concrete Manufacturing
Precast yards use Conplast W on plain (non-reinforced) units to accelerate early strength and strip moulds sooner, raising the number of casting cycles a bed can deliver each day.
Cold-Weather & High-Altitude Construction
On winter pours in North India and in hill stations, the admixture keeps plain concreting viable when low temperatures would otherwise stall the set, while adding frost protection.
Floors, Screeds & Pavements
Floor slabs and screeds benefit from earlier hardening, allowing finishing operations and follow-on trades to start sooner on plain sections.
General Contracting & Repairs
Contractors use it for rapid stiffening of plain mortar and patch concrete where a quick set shortens downtime, switching to Conplast NC the moment reinforcement is present.

How we position Fosroc Conplast W
Within Fosroc’s Conplast admixture family, Conplast W occupies a narrow but specific niche: a low-cost chloride-based accelerator for plain, cold-weather and precast concrete. Its natural companion product is Conplast NC, the chloride-free accelerator that Space Arc recommends — and Fosroc mandates — the moment reinforcement, prestressing steel, sulphate-resisting cement or steam curing enters the picture. It should not be confused with the integral waterproofing admixtures Conplast WL and Conplast WL Xtra, nor with water-reducing plasticisers and superplasticisers such as Conplast R and Conplast SP430, which are chosen for workability and durability rather than acceleration. Against the wider market, chloride-free accelerators from Sika (Sika Rapid / SikaSet range), MYK Schomburg / MBS, and STP perform a similar early-strength role, while general-purpose brands such as Dr. Fixit cover the integral-waterproofing space that Conplast W deliberately does not address. The honest positioning is therefore simple: choose Conplast W only for plain concrete where fast early strength is the goal, move to a chloride-free accelerator (Fosroc Conplast NC or equivalent) for anything with steel, and use a dedicated waterproofing admixture when watertightness — not speed — is the requirement. Space Arc’s role is to make that selection correctly and supply the right Fosroc product first time.
