What is it?

A single-component, pre-bagged, free-flowing micro-concrete with an integral reinforcement corrosion inhibitor. Just add clean water on site to produce a self-compacting, shrinkage-compensated repair concrete.

Where is it used?

Large-volume structural repairs to RCC columns, beams, soffits, pile caps, bridge substructures and marine/coastal structures where carbonation or chloride attack has corroded the steel.

Why use it?

It both rebuilds the lost concrete section AND chemically protects the embedded rebar, cutting future corrosion risk in chloride- and carbonation-loaded Indian environments.

How is it applied?

Mix one bag with the specified clean water, then pour or pump into formwork around prepared, primed reinforcement. The self-compacting flow fills congested zones without vibration.

About Fosroc Renderoc LAF-IC

Fosroc Renderoc LAF-IC is part of Fosroc’s Renderoc family of cementitious concrete-repair mortars and micro-concretes, sitting within the free-flowing “LAF” (Large Area, Free-flowing) micro-concrete line. The “-IC” suffix denotes Integral Corrosion-inhibitor: in addition to rebuilding the lost concrete cover, the material carries a corrosion-inhibiting admixture that migrates to and helps passivate the embedded steel reinforcement. It is supplied as a ready-to-use, factory-blended dry powder based on Portland cement, graded aggregates and proprietary additives that impart controlled (dual) expansion in both the plastic and hardened states, minimising plastic-settlement and drying-shrinkage cracking that would otherwise compromise a repair. On site, only clean water is added, eliminating the batching variability typical of site-mixed mortars. Once mixed, the material is highly fluid and self-compacting, so it can be poured or pumped into formwork and will flow around dense reinforcement cages and into restricted pockets without mechanical vibration or rodding. This makes it a natural choice where hand- or trowel-applied repair mortars are impractical — deep sections, soffits, congested rebar and locations with poor access. The cured micro-concrete is low in permeability and resistant to sulphates, giving it strong resistance to the chloride ions, carbon dioxide and aggressive ground/marine conditions that drive reinforcement corrosion across much of India’s coastal and industrial infrastructure. In short, Renderoc LAF-IC is a “structural rebuild plus durability upgrade” product: it restores load-bearing section while addressing the underlying corrosion mechanism that caused the damage. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, it is specified on rehabilitation projects where engineers want both a high-strength reinstatement and an extra line of defence for the steel.

The technical insight

The defining feature of LAF-IC versus a plain free-flowing micro-concrete is the integral corrosion inhibitor. Reinforcement corrosion in concrete is electrochemical: chlorides and carbonation depassivate the steel, after which moisture and oxygen drive anodic/cathodic reactions that produce expansive rust, cracking and spalling. A patch repair that only replaces concrete creates a fresh, highly alkaline (passivating) zone next to older, chloride-contaminated, lower-resistivity concrete — setting up an “incipient anode” (ring-anode) effect where corrosion simply migrates to the patch perimeter. By carrying a corrosion inhibitor within the repair material, LAF-IC raises the chloride-corrosion threshold at the steel and suppresses this halo effect, which is precisely why Fosroc positions the “-IC” grades for durability-critical work. The free-flowing rheology is engineered through graded aggregate and water-reducing additives to achieve a high slump-flow at a low water/powder ratio, so strength and low permeability are not sacrificed for workability. The dual expansion system (gaseous expansion while plastic, plus a hardened-state expansive reaction) compensates for settlement and shrinkage so the repair stays in intimate, bonded contact with the substrate rather than debonding — critical for load transfer in a structural reinstatement. As a one-component micro-concrete in this family, it is designed to develop high compressive strength comparable to good structural concrete and is intended to meet BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 (structural repair) performance, the highest repair class in the standard.

Where it is used

  • Reinstatement of large, deep structural sections of reinforced concrete (columns, beams, pile caps, plinths)
  • Repairs where reinforcement is congested or access is restricted and hand-applied mortars cannot be properly compacted
  • Pour or pump applications into formwork around corroded, cleaned and primed reinforcement
  • Rehabilitation of chloride- or carbonation-damaged structures where additional corrosion protection of the steel is required
  • Marine, coastal and splash-zone structures, jetties, sea-front buildings and sulphate-bearing ground conditions
  • Bridge substructures, flyover piers, RCC water-retaining and effluent structures undergoing durability-driven repair

Key advantages

  • Integral corrosion inhibitor adds a second line of defence for embedded steel, reducing incipient-anode (ring-anode) corrosion around the patch
  • Free-flowing, self-compacting — pours or pumps into restricted, congested locations without vibration or honeycombing
  • Dual expansion system compensates for plastic and hardened shrinkage, maintaining bond and avoiding debonding
  • High strength, low permeability micro-concrete suitable for structural (load-bearing) reinstatement
  • Sulphate resistant and resistant to chloride/CO2 ingress — well suited to Indian coastal and aggressive-ground conditions
  • Pre-bagged single component: only clean water added on site, eliminating site-batching variability
  • Excellent bond to a correctly prepared concrete substrate, enabling large-volume deep-section repairs

Limitations & considerations

  • A flowable micro-concrete — it requires formwork and is not suited to thin, feather-edged or vertical trowel-applied patches (use a thixotropic grade like Renderoc TS-IC / Renderoc HB for those)
  • Has a minimum section thickness; very shallow repairs are outside its design range
  • Single-pour lift depth is limited by repair geometry and exposed rebar volume — large pours may need staged placement and venting
  • Should not be applied when ambient temperature is below ~5C and falling, nor exposed to running water before final set
  • Part-bag mixing or extra water must be avoided — it invalidates performance and the product guarantee
  • The corrosion inhibitor supplements but does not replace correct reinforcement preparation and priming (e.g. Nitoprime Zincrich) where specified
  • Requires trained applicators, proper surface preparation, presoaking and curing to achieve datasheet performance

Selection & best practice

Treat LAF-IC as a structural pour, not a patch. Saw-cut or square-edge the repair perimeter (no feather edges), break out to expose all corroded steel and clean the bars to a bright finish, removing rust from the back of the bar. Prime exposed reinforcement where the specification calls for it. Build rigid, sealed, well-braced formwork with pour and air-vent points, and pre-soak the substrate to a saturated surface-dry condition. Mix full bags only, using exactly the specified clean-water addition and a forced-action mixer to a lump-free, flowable consistency; never add extra water to improve flow. Pour or pump from one side to displace air, work within the material’s working time (shorter in Indian summer heat), and protect and moist-cure the placed concrete to prevent rapid drying. For best durability outcomes, combine LAF-IC with the wider Fosroc system — anti-carbonation/protective coatings and, where appropriate, additional corrosion-management measures. Always work to the current project-specific Fosroc TDS for the exact water dosage, lift thickness and cure regime.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ‘-IC’ in Renderoc LAF-IC stand for?
IC denotes the integral corrosion inhibitor. Compared with standard Renderoc LAF, the LAF-IC grade carries a corrosion-inhibiting admixture that helps protect the embedded steel reinforcement and suppress the incipient-anode (ring-anode) corrosion that can otherwise form around a concrete patch. It increases the long-term durability of the repaired structure.
How is Renderoc LAF-IC different from a trowel-applied repair mortar like Renderoc HB or TS-IC?
LAF-IC is a free-flowing, self-compacting micro-concrete that is poured or pumped into formwork — ideal for large, deep, congested sections. Renderoc HB and the thixotropic TS-IC are hand/trowel-applied mortars for shallower, vertical and overhead patches. Choose LAF-IC for high-volume structural reinstatement, and a thixotropic grade for small surface patches and feather areas.
What minimum and maximum thickness can it be applied at?
As a free-flowing micro-concrete it is intended for substantial section depths rather than thin skims, and is placed within formwork. Maximum single-lift depth depends on the repair geometry and the volume of exposed reinforcement. Always confirm the exact minimum and maximum thickness for your application against the current project-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet.
Does Renderoc LAF-IC need formwork and curing?
Yes. Because it is flowable, it must be poured or pumped into rigid, sealed formwork with pour and air-vent points. The substrate should be pre-soaked, and the placed concrete must be protected and moist-cured to achieve the datasheet strength and durability. It should not be exposed to running water before final set.
Is it suitable for marine and chloride-exposed structures in India?
Yes — it is sulphate resistant, low in permeability and carries an integral corrosion inhibitor, which makes it well suited to coastal, marine and chloride/carbonation-loaded environments common across Indian infrastructure. For maximum durability it is usually combined with surface protective/anti-carbonation coatings from the Fosroc system.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc LAF-IC

Within the Fosroc Renderoc range, LAF-IC is the corrosion-inhibited, free-flowing micro-concrete for large-volume structural reinstatement. It is the pour/pump counterpart to Fosroc’s thixotropic corrosion-inhibited mortar Renderoc TS-IC (used for hand-applied vertical/overhead patches) and to general trowel grades like Renderoc HB. For repairs that do not require the integral inhibitor, the standard free-flowing grades Renderoc LAF, Renderoc LA, LA55 and LA80 are the direct alternatives, while pourable micro-concretes such as Renderoc RG suit different geometries. As part of a full durability system it is typically paired with reinforcement primers (e.g. Nitoprime Zincrich) and anti-carbonation/protective coatings from the Dekguard range. Against competitor systems, comparable corrosion-inhibited / structural repair micro-concretes and mortars include Sika MonoTop and Sika’s FerroGard corrosion-inhibitor line, MBS (MYK / BASF MasterEmaco) repair micro-concretes such as the MasterEmaco S range, Dr. Fixit Pidicrete/Krishna concrete-repair mortars, and STP (Krishna Conbext) repair systems. LAF-IC’s distinguishing strengths are the combination of free-flowing self-compaction for congested deep sections plus the integral inhibitor for steel protection. Space Arc Engineering supplies the genuine Fosroc product and can advise on the right grade for each repair scenario; verify all numeric performance values against the current project-specific Fosroc TDS before specification.
