Conplast SP550
High-Performance Naphthalene Sulphonate Superplasticiser for High-Strength Concrete
Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad
Product Overview
Conplast SP550 is a high-performance, high-range water-reducing superplasticiser based on sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate conforming to ASTM C494 Type F (high-range water reducer). It belongs to the second generation of synthetic superplasticisers that were the industry standard for high-strength and high-workability concrete before the emergence of polycarboxylate ether (PCE) technology. At the correct dosage, Conplast SP550 can reduce the water demand of a concrete mix by 25% to 30% while maintaining equivalent workability, enabling the production of high-strength concrete (M50 to M70) at water-cement ratios that would be impossible to achieve with conventional plasticisers. Alternatively, without any water reduction, Conplast SP550 can produce flowing or self-compacting concrete with slumps of 200 mm or higher for easy placing in densely reinforced sections or for pumping over long distances without segregation. The naphthalene sulphonate chemistry is well-established, with a long track record of performance in the Indian ready mix and precast concrete market. Conplast SP550 is compatible with all Portland cements (OPC, PPC, PSC) and with supplementary cementitious materials. For projects requiring very high workability retention over longer delivery times, the PCE-based Auramix range should be considered as an alternative. Space Arc Engineering distributes Conplast SP550 for high-rise, infrastructure, and precast concrete projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Conplast SP550 compare to the Auramix PCE superplasticisers?
Conplast SP550 is a naphthalene sulphonate-based admixture (second generation) while the Auramix range uses polycarboxylate ether (PCE) chemistry (third generation). PCE admixtures generally provide better workability retention (the slump is maintained for longer after mixing), are effective at lower dosages, and can achieve higher water reduction. Naphthalene sulphonates like SP550 provide more consistent performance across a wider range of cement types and temperatures and are generally lower in cost. For standard high-strength and pump concrete with moderate delivery times, Conplast SP550 is a proven and cost-effective option. For very long delivery distances or when extended workability is critical, Auramix 200 or higher grades are preferred.
Can Conplast SP550 be used to produce self-compacting concrete (SCC)?
Conplast SP550 can produce concrete with very high slump and flow, but producing true self-compacting concrete that flows under its own weight, passes between reinforcing bars without vibration, and resists segregation typically requires a PCE-based superplasticiser (Auramix range) combined with viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMA). Naphthalene sulphonate-based superplasticisers at very high dosages can cause excessive bleeding and segregation in flowing concrete mixes. For SCC production, trial mixes with the Auramix PCE range and appropriate mix design (higher paste content, lower water-cement ratio) are recommended.
What is the maximum dosage of Conplast SP550 and what happens if overdosed?
The typical dosage range of Conplast SP550 is 0.5 to 2.5 litres per 100 kg of cement, with the optimum dosage established by trial mix. Over-dosing beyond the saturation point (the dosage above which additional admixture provides no further workability benefit) can cause excessive set retardation, segregation, and bleeding in the fresh concrete. The saturation point varies with the cement type and content and must be established by trial. Always start at the lower end of the dosage range and increase based on measured workability and setting time.
