What is it?

A single-component latex acrylic polymer emulsion that is site-blended with ordinary Portland cement to form a brushable protective coating for corroded and exposed steel reinforcement.

Where is it used?

On cleaned rebar exposed during concrete patch repairs, spall reinstatement and rehabilitation of RCC beams, columns, slabs and marine or industrial structures.

Why use it?

It bonds tightly to steel, is fully compatible with cementitious repair mortars, and gives the reinforcement a corrosion-resistant film before the mortar goes back on.

How is it applied?

Mixed with cement at roughly 1 part AP35 to 1.25 parts cement, then applied to prepared rebar by brush, usually in two coats.

About Fosroc Nitocote AP35

Fosroc Nitocote AP35 sits at the very first step of almost every serious concrete repair. When a slab, beam or column spalls, the root cause is usually corroded reinforcement, and once that steel is exposed and cleaned back to bright metal, it needs a protective coat before any mortar is reinstated. AP35 is Fosroc’s economical answer for that step: a single-component acrylic polymer emulsion that the applicator simply blends with fresh cement on site to produce a smooth, brushable slurry. There is no second component to measure, no induction time to watch, and no specialist kit required beyond a clean bucket and a brush.

What makes it practical on Indian sites is how forgiving it is. The polymer carries the cement into intimate contact with the steel, so the coating grips both the rebar and, later, the repair mortar that closes over it. Because the film is cement-rich it stays chemically at home inside an alkaline concrete environment rather than sitting as a foreign barrier. For contractors handling large volumes of routine reinstatement work, where a zinc-rich epoxy would be overkill on cost, AP35 gives a dependable, code-friendly line of defence against future corrosion at a fraction of the price.

The technical insight

Corrosion of embedded steel is an electrochemical process: once chlorides or carbonation break down the passive oxide layer, anodic and cathodic sites set up on the bar and rust expands, cracking the cover concrete. AP35 interrupts that cycle in two ways. First, it is a cement-based coating, so the film re-establishes the high-alkalinity environment that keeps steel passive, essentially rebuilding the chemical protection the original cover used to provide. Second, the acrylic polymer acts as the binder that grips clean steel and forms a dense, low-permeability skin, restricting the ingress of moisture and oxygen that any corrosion cell needs to keep running. Because the coating is cementitious rather than a rigid resin barrier, it remains fully compatible with the repair mortar placed over it, so the rebar, the AP35 film and the reinstatement mortar cure into one continuous, monolithic repair instead of separated layers that can debond.

Where it is used

  • Priming and protecting exposed rebar during concrete spall and patch repairs
  • Anti-corrosion coating for reinforcement in beam, column and slab rehabilitation
  • Reinstatement work on marine and coastal RCC structures exposed to chlorides
  • Repair of carbonation-damaged concrete on buildings and facades
  • Protecting steel in water-retaining and drainage structures under repair
  • Rebar treatment ahead of Renderoc-type reinstatement mortars
  • Routine, high-volume structural repair where a full epoxy system is not warranted
  • Refurbishment of industrial floors, plinths and RCC elements with corroded steel

Key advantages

  • Single component on site, needing only cement and water to make a workable coating
  • Excellent adhesion to all types of steel substrate when properly prepared
  • Cement-based chemistry keeps it fully compatible with concrete and repair mortars
  • Re-establishes alkaline protection around the reinforcement
  • Easily brush-applied with no specialist equipment or trained resin crews
  • Non-toxic and water-based, simpler to handle and store than solvented primers
  • Economical for large-area reinstatement compared with zinc-rich epoxy primers
  • Widely specified and stocked, so it is easy to source across projects in India

Limitations & considerations

  • Provides barrier and alkaline protection but not the galvanic (sacrificial) defence of a zinc-rich epoxy primer
  • Performance depends heavily on preparing the steel to a clean, rust-free surface first
  • Must be blended on site with cement, so mix ratio and pot life need to be controlled by the crew
  • Application temperature should not fall below about 10 degrees C for proper film formation
  • Not a standalone waterproofing or decorative coat, it is one step within a repair system
  • Being cementitious, it must be overcoated with mortar and not left permanently exposed

Selection & best practice

Start with the steel, not the coating. Break out loose and delaminated concrete until you reach sound substrate all around the corroded bar, then clean the reinforcement back to bright metal by wire brushing, needle-gunning or grit blasting to remove all rust, scale and contamination. Blend Nitocote AP35 with fresh ordinary Portland cement at approximately 1 part polymer to 1.25 parts cement to a smooth, brushable consistency, mixing only what can be used within the working time. Apply the first coat by brush, working it well into the profile of the bar and around the back face where access allows, then apply the second coat once the first has set. Keep application above roughly 10 degrees C. Follow the system through with a compatible cementitious repair mortar such as the Renderoc range while the AP35-treated steel is still protected, so the whole repair cures monolithically. Store the material in a cool, dry place in sealed containers and keep it from freezing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitocote AP35 an anti-carbonation coating for concrete surfaces?
No. AP35 is applied to exposed steel reinforcement, not to concrete faces. It is a rebar anti-corrosion coating within a repair system. For anti-carbonation protection of concrete surfaces, Fosroc’s Dekguard range is the relevant product.
How is Nitocote AP35 mixed?
It is a single-component polymer that you blend on site with fresh ordinary Portland cement, at roughly 1 part AP35 to 1.25 parts cement, until you have a smooth, brushable slurry. Mix only as much as your crew can apply within the working time.
How many coats are needed and how is it applied?
It is normally brush-applied in two coats over prepared, rust-free steel. Work the first coat well around the bar, let it set, then apply the second coat before reinstating the repair mortar.
How is it different from Nitozinc Primer or Nitoprime Zincrich?
AP35 is a cement-compatible acrylic coating that re-alkalises and forms a barrier around the steel. The zinc-rich epoxy primers add active galvanic (sacrificial) protection and are chosen for aggressive chloride or marine exposure where a higher level of defence is specified.
What pack sizes are available?
Nitocote AP35 is supplied in 1 litre, 5 litre and 20 litre packs, so you can size the quantity to the scale of the repair.
Does Space Arc supply AP35 with the rest of the repair system?
Yes. As a Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, we supply AP35 alongside the compatible Renderoc repair mortars and, where a higher-spec primer is required, the zinc-rich Nitozinc Primer, so you can source the complete repair system from one place.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote AP35

Nitocote AP35 is the value option in Fosroc’s rebar-protection line and is best understood as one stage of a complete repair system rather than a product in isolation. Where a project demands active galvanic protection for reinforcement in aggressive chloride or marine conditions, step up to the two-component zinc-rich epoxy Nitozinc Primer, or Nitoprime Zincrich for repair-zone rebar; both add sacrificial zinc that AP35 does not provide. Once the steel is coated, close the repair with a compatible cementitious reinstatement mortar such as Renderoc GP so the whole system cures monolithically. For protecting the finished concrete surface itself against carbonation, the Fosroc Dekguard range is the correct follow-on rather than AP35. Across our other brands, Space Arc can also supply equivalent rebar-protection and micro-concrete repair products from Sika, Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie where a project is standardised on a particular manufacturer.
